The article is dedicated to the substantiation of the complex parameter that characterizes the technical level of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). This parameter includes the maximum lift-to-drag ratio, propeller efficiency, specific fuel consumption, and other components, on which the main flight characteristics, such as flight range and flight duration, depend. To make a comparative assessment of UAVs of different types, a special scale is developed.

An analysis of requirements to electric vertical take-off and landing unmanned aerial vehicle with fixed wings is carried out in this article. These aircraft have to fulfil requirements of users and to be convenient for operation in any field conditions. Long flight duration and long flight range are important for most missions. Mathematical models for both cases are presented and it has been found that the requirements for the wing load are different. It is recommended to use a type of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) that is modular and allows performing flights with different configurations and payload depending on the mission in order to fulfill these requirements.

This article is a product of the design process of a Blended-Wing- Body Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (BWB UAV). The BWB geometry blends the wing and the fuselage so that the fuselage also contributes in lift generation. This geometry reduces the lift to drag ratio significantly, however it also compromises the aircraft’s stability and controllability, since there is no horizontal and vertical tail. As these features are absent from the BWB layout, the need to incorporate their functions in the new geometry arises so that they cover stability demands sufficiently, according to aircraft of similar size, use and speed. Additionally, the method used for stability studies of conventional aircraft must also be adapted. This article covers the adaptation of the method to the new BWB geometry, its results in comparison to those of conventional aircraft and the use of the results for a computational simulation of the aircraft’ flight.

ABSTRACT The aerodynamic performance of a deployable and low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is investigated and improved in present work. The parameters of configuration, such as airfoil and winglet, are determined via an optimising process based on a discrete adjoint method. The optimised target is locked on an increasing lift-to-drag ratio with a limited variation of pitching moments. The separation that will lead to a stall is delayed after optimisation. Up to 128 design variables are used by the optimised solver to give enough flexibility of the geometrical transformation. As much as 20% enhancement of lift-to-drag ratio is gained at the cruise angle-of-attack, that is, a significant improvement in the lift-to-drag ratio adhering to the preferred configuration is obtained with increasing lift and decreasing drag coefficients, essentially entailing an improved aerodynamic performance.

To improve the performance of multi-unmanned aerial vehicle path planning in plateau narrow area, a control strategy based on Cauchy mutant pigeon-inspired optimization algorithm is proposed in this article. The Cauchy mutation operator is chosen to improve the pigeon-inspired optimization algorithm by comparing and analyzing the changing trend of fitness function of the local optimum position and the global optimum position when dealing with unmanned aerial vehicle path planning problems. The plateau topography model and plateau wind field model are established. Furthermore, a variety of control constrains of unmanned aerial vehicles are summarized and modeled. By combining with relative positions and total flight duration, a cooperative path planning strategy for unmanned aerial vehicle group is put forward. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed Cauchy mutant pigeon-inspired optimization method gives better robustness and cooperative path planning strategy which are effective and advanced as compared with traditional pigeon-inspired optimization algorithm.

The proposed observation model provides for calculating the probability of detection of different types of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) at a certain range with regard to their tactical and technical characteristics and security equipment capabilities. The comparison of the obtained values of generalized indicators of security equipment use efficiency is based on a specified criterion. To take into account factors that significantly affect a modeling object, calculations are carried out under specified conditions and restrictions. UAVs should be detected until a covering object gets in a swath width given the time required for countermeasures. Based on the software implementation of the algorithm we have evaluated the efficiency of use of hypothetical security equipment for detecting certain types of UAVs, and defined means of further use or improvement.

In this study a gasoline powered hexa-copter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been designed as a solution to farmers’ need for a low cost, easy to maintain, long flight duration, and multi-purpose means of specific aerial applications for insecticides and herbicides. Application of herbicides and pesticides by airplane is an example of how farmers have used technology to improve their bottom line and overall quality of life. Fields can now be sprayed in under an hour instead of consuming an entire day. However, if a producer has noxious weeds in only a small area, fixed-wing aerial application cannot be used as it is only accurate enough to do an entire field. Currently there is no solution for small scale, accurate, aerial herbicide application to meet this need. The currently available Yamaha Rmax UAV costs a tremendous amount of money and also requires a lot of money to maintain. Though it may be useful in large scale aerial spraying on the farm land, it would not be used in targeted specific areas as it is not efficient in specific applications. The gasoline powered hexacopter UAV designed in this study is a low cost solution to farmers’ need for specific aerial applications of insecticides and herbicides. The UAV design can carry 2–3 gallons of herbicide (16.7–25.0 lbs.) for a flight time of more than 30 minutes without refueling. The design could be transported in a 60.3in × 56.7in pickup bed. Structural and fatigue analyses are performed on the complete structure using state of the art software SolidWorks Simulation. The minimum factor of safety is obtained to be 10 based on maximum von Mises stress failure criteria. Under normal conditions with an estimated commercial use of 100 cycles per day it is observed that the design would survive for about 13 years without any fatigue failure. A drop test analysis is performed to ensure the design can survive a 5 feet freefall and a frequency analysis is also performed to observe the critical natural frequency of the structure. Flow simulations are performed on the 6 propellers/blades model using state of the art software SolidWorks Flow Simulation to observe the effect of vorticity interactions on the lift force. The design has been reasonably optimized based on maximizing the lift force. With this new UAV design small scale and substantial farmers could afford a personal UAV for aerial applications with a small amount of capital whose absence hindered efficient and effective specific aerial application for many years.

This paper offers a set of novel navigation techniques that rely on the use of inertial sensors and wide-field optical flow information. The aircraft ground velocity and attitude states are estimated with an Unscented Information Filter (UIF) and are evaluated with respect to two sets of experimental flight data collected from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Two different formulations are proposed, a full state formulation including velocity and attitude and a simplified formulation which assumes that the lateral and vertical velocity of the aircraft are negligible. An additional state is also considered within each formulation to recover the image distance which can be measured using a laser rangefinder. The results demonstrate that the full state formulation is able to estimate the aircraft ground velocity to within 1.3 m/s of a GPS receiver solution used as reference “truth” and regulate attitude angles within 1.4 degrees standard deviation of error for both sets of flight data.

This study was conducted to investigate the performance of passive and active vortex generator on the wing’s flap. The triangular shape of passive vortex generator (VG) was developed and attached on the wing’s flap leading edge while the plasma actuator performed as active vortex generator. The test was carried out experimentally using subsonic wind tunnel with 300 angles extended flap. Three different types of turbulent flow; with Reynolds number 1.5 x105, 2.0 x105, and 2.6x105 were used to study the aerodynamics forces of airfoil with plasma actuator OFF. All Reynolds number used were below 1x106. The result indicated that airfoil with plasma actuator produced higher lift coefficient 12% and lift-to-drag ratio 5% compared to airfoil with passive vortex generator. The overall result showed that airfoil with plasma actuator produced better lift forces compared to passive vortex generator.

Abstract: UAV or unmanned aerial vehicle is an air vehicle or what we often call an airplane that is controlled without a crew but controlled by a pilot remotely using a remote control. This study uses quantitative experiment methods because in this study it must be carried out when the UAV is flying using the autonomous waypoint method. Running the UAV with the autonomous waypoint method, we can use the Mission Planner software. First, we have to install the application on the mission planner and install pixhawk on the UAV which will act as the UAV brain that will receive and execute flight commands that will be sent by the mission planner later. The mission planner can also directly display flight data such as UAV altitude, UAV speed, UAV location, then the mission planner can also store flight data run by the UAV. The Autonomous waypoint method has been widely used in the military field, such as to carry out attacks on the enemy, reconnaissance, and patrol in an area quickly, and can also reduce casualties during combat operations.
