The air separators are used to provide safe, clean and appropriate air to the helicopter’s engine. In this operational study, the separation process inside a Ranque-Hilsch air separator cleaning system has been investigated to analyze the impact of choosing the appropriate turbulence model for predicting the separation process inside the air separator. This research is directed towards presenting a computational fluid dynamic explanation performed on a counter-flow air separator using air at different magnitudes of air flow fraction and applying different turbulence models. In a numerical investigation of counter-flow air separator, air has been chosen and its vortex separation phe- nomenon has been analyzed as a function of flow fraction. Furthermore, a numerical analysis to compare the outputs of a seven equation RSM turbulence model applied for the study of vortex separation of a counter-flow air separator with some two-equation turbulence methods, namely, k-ε and k-ω model as well as LES has been presented. All of the turbulence numerical methods are seen to present and predict the same flow pattern inside an air separator, but, with various details. The results show that among the tested methods the RSM creates the most accurate separation pattern. The numerical results are validated by some available experimental data with good agreement.

This paper presents a study on the flow dynamics involving vehicle interactions. In order to do so, this study first explores aerodynamic prediction capabilities of popular turbulence models used in computational fluid dynamics simulations involving tandem objects and thus, ultimately presents a framework for CFD simulations of ground vehicle platooning using a realistic vehicle model, DrivAer. Considering the availability of experimental data, the simulation methodology is first developed using a tandem arrangement of surface-mounted cubes which requires an understanding on the role of turbulence models and the impacts of the associated turbulence model closure coefficients on the prediction veracity. It was observed that the prediction accuracy of the SST k−ω turbulence model can be significantly improved through the use of a combination of modified values for the closure coefficients. Additionally, the initial validation studies reveal the inability of the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) approach to resolve the far wake, and its frailty in simulating tandem body interactions. The Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulations (IDDES) approach can resolve the wakes with a reasonable accuracy. The validated simulation methodology is then applied to the fastback DrivAer model at different longitudinal spacing. The results show that, as the longitudinal spacing is reduced, the trailing car’s drag is increased while the leading car’s drag is decreased which supports prior explanations of vortex impingement as the reason for drag changes. Additionally, unlike the case of platooning involving Ahmed bodies, the trailing model drag does not return to an isolated state value at a two car-length separation. However, the impact of the resolution of the far wake of a detailed DrivAer model, and its implication on the CFD characterization of vehicle interaction aerodynamics need further investigations.

Taking a lead from the humpback whale flukes, characterized by a series of bumps that result in a sinusoidal-like leading edge, this paper reports on a three-dimensional numerical study of sinusoidal leading edges on cambered airfoil profiles. The turbulent flow around the cambered airfoil with the sinusoidal leading edge was computed at different angles of attack with the open source solver OpenFOAM, using two different eddy viscosity models integrated to the wall. The reported research focused on the effects of the modified leading edge in terms of lift-to-drag performance and the influence of camber on such parameters. For these reasons a comparison with a symmetric airfoil is provided. The research was primarily concerned with the elucidation of the fluid flow mechanisms induced by the bumps and the impact of those mechanisms on airfoil performance, on both symmetric and cambered profiles. The bumps on the leading edge influenced the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil, and the lift curves were found to feature an early recovery in post-stall for the symmetric profile with an additional gain in lift for the cambered profile. The bumps drove the fluid dynamic on the suction side of the airfoil, which in turn resulted in the capability to control the separation at the trailing edge in coincidence with the peak of the sinusoid at the leading edge.

This paper presents an assessment of machine-learned turbulence closures, trained for improving wake-mixing prediction, in the context of LPT flows. To this end, a three-dimensional cascade of industrial relevance, representative of modern LPT bladings, was analyzed, using a state-of-the-art RANS approach, over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. To ensure that the wake originates from correctly reproduced blade boundary-layers, preliminary analyses were carried out to check for the impact of transition closures, and the best-performing numerical setup was identified. Two different machine-learned closures were considered. They were applied in a prescribed region downstream of the blade trailing edge, excluding the endwall boundary layers. A sensitivity analysis to the distance from the trailing edge at which they are activated is presented in order to assess their applicability to the whole wake affected portion of the computational domain and outside the training region. It is shown how the best-performing closure can provide results in very good agreement with the experimental data in terms of wake loss profiles, with substantial improvements relative to traditional turbulence models. The discussed analysis also provides guidelines for defining an automated zonal application of turbulence closures trained for wake-mixing predictions.

We present our progress toward setting initial conditions in variable density turbulence models. In particular, we concentrate our efforts on the BHR turbulence model [1] for turbulent Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Our approach is to predict profiles of relevant variables before fully turbulent regime and use them as initial conditions for the turbulence model. We use an idealized model of mixing between two interpenetrating fluids to define the initial profiles for the turbulence model variables. Velocities and volume fractions used in the idealized mixing model are obtained respectively from a set of ordinary differential equations modeling the growth of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability and from an idealization of the density profile in the mixing layer. A comparison between predicted profiles for the turbulence model variables and profiles of the variables obtained from low Atwood number three dimensional simulations show reasonable agreement.

The numerical analysis for the round jet impingement over a circular cylinder has been carried out. The v2f turbulence model is used for the numerical analysis and compared with the two equation turbulence models from the fluid flow and the heat transfer point of view. Further, the numerical results for the heat transfer with original and modified v2f turbulence model are compared with the experimental results. The nozzle is placed orthogonally to the target surface (heated cylindrical surface). The flow is assumed as the steady, incompressible, three-dimensional and turbulent. The spacing between the nozzle exit and the target surface ranges from 4 to 15 times the nozzle diameter. The Reynolds number based on the nozzle diameter ranges from 23,000 to 38,800. From the heat transfer results, the modified v2f turbulence model is better as compared to the other turbulence models. The modified v2f turbulence model has the least error for the numerical Nusselt number at the stagnation point and wall jet region.

The present work reviews a comparison between calculations of a steady and unsteady three dimensional (3D) flow past the diffuser channels of a centrifugal pump. The commercial software ANSYS Fluent has been used. The considered domain is one of the three stages, since each has exactly the same design. In the first part, simulations are carried out at the best efficiency point (BEP) both steady and transient state, single phase flow and four different turbulence models. Results are compared with the performance report from the manufacturer. In the second part, only the realizable k-ε turbulence model has been taken into account. The simulations have been repeated for different mass flows and the results were again compared with the data from the manufacturer. The comparison performed in the first part shows that integral quantities results are not sensibly influenced by the turbulence model. The comparison at different mass flow shows that the steady state simulations demonstrated to be a good approximation of the transient state, always containing the error within an acceptable limit. The minor computational effort needed makes it attractive to be used for further investigations which will involve two-phase flow studies on the same pump.

AbstractIn the present work, a recently developed in-house 2D CFD code is used to study the effect of gas turbine stator blade roughness on various performance parameters of a two-dimensional blade cascade. The 2D CFD model is based on a high resolution flux difference splitting scheme of Roe (1981). The Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are closed using the zero-equation turbulence model of Baldwin-Lomax (1978) and two-equation Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model. For the smooth blade, results are compared with experimental data to validate the model. Finally, a correlation between roughness Reynolds number and loss coefficient for both turbulence models is presented and tested for three other roughness heights. The results of 2D turbine blade cascades can be used for one-dimensional models such as mean line analysis or quasi-three-dimensional models e.g. streamline curvature method.

Little is known about the impact of the total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) on resting and exercise hemodynamics in a single ventricle (SV) circulation. The aim of this study was to elucidate this mechanism using a lumped parameter model of the SV circulation. Pulmonary vascular resistance (1.96 ± 0.80 WU) and systemic vascular resistances (18.4 ± 7.2 WU) were obtained from catheterization data on 40 patients with a TCPC. TCPC resistances (0.39 ± 0.26 WU) were established using computational fluid dynamic simulations conducted on anatomically accurate three-dimensional models reconstructed from MRI ( n = 16). These parameters were used in a lumped parameter model of the SV circulation to investigate the impact of TCPC resistance on SV hemodynamics under resting and exercise conditions. A biventricular model was used for comparison. For a biventricular circulation, the cardiac output (CO) dependence on TCPC resistance was negligible (sensitivity = −0.064 l·min−1·WU−1) but not for the SV circulation (sensitivity = −0.88 l·min−1·WU−1). The capacity to increase CO with heart rate was also severely reduced for the SV. At a simulated heart rate of 150 beats/min, the SV patient with the highest resistance (1.08 WU) had a significantly lower increase in CO (20.5%) compared with the SV patient with the lowest resistance (50%) and normal circulation (119%). This was due to the increased afterload (+35%) and decreased preload (−12%) associated with the SV circulation. In conclusion, TCPC resistance has a significant impact on resting hemodynamics and the exercise capacity of patients with a SV physiology.

AbstractIn centrifugal pumps, it is important to select appropriate turbulence model for the numerical simulation in order to obtain reliable and accurate results. In this work, ten turbulence models in 3-D transient simulation for the centrifugal pump are chosen and compared. The pump performance is validated with experimental results. The numerical results reveal that the SST turbulence model was closer to the experimental results in predicting head. In addition, the pressure variation trend for the ten models is very similar which increases and then decreases from the inlet to outlet of the pump along the streamline. The SST k-ω model predicts the performance of the pump was more accurately than other turbulent models. Furthermore, the results also found that the error is the least at design operation condition 300(l/min), which is around 1.98 % for the SST model and 2.14 % and 2.38 % for the LES and transition omega model. Within 7.61 %, the errors at higher flow rate 350(l/min) for SST. The error for SST model is smaller as compared to different turbulent models. For the Realizable k-ɛ model, the errors fluctuate were more high than other models.

In this article a combined experimental and numerical investigation of the unsteady mixing flow of the ingestion gas and rim sealing air inside a rotating disk cavity was carried out. A new test rig was set up, and the experiments were conducted on a 1.5-stage turbine rotor disk and included pressure measurements. The flow structure of the mixing region of the ingestion gas and sealing air in cavity was measured using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. To complement the experimental investigation and to aid in understanding the flow mechanism within the cavity, a three-dimensional (3D) unsteady computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis was undertaken. Both simulated and experimental results indicated that near the rotating disk, (i) a large amount of the ingestion gas will turn around and flow out the cavity due to the impact of the centrifugal force and the Coriolis force, (ii) a small amount of ingestion gas will mix transiently with the sealing air inside the cavity, whereas near the static disk, (iii) the ingestion gas will flow into the cavity along the static wall and mix with the sealing air.
