The relationship between new and existing in urban design is considered by Le Corbusier an opportunity for poetic composition through sequences of visual frames. The public space constitutes the connective tissue and the measure of perceived distance. The buildings are curtains and visual horizons in the territory: they can define the space in which the collective urban scene takes place. Project of soil and perceptive paths allow a paratactical composition of pieces, assembled according to the calibrated balance of spatial proportion; organic dynamicity of the nature and geometric sign refer both to the physical location of the settlement and baggage of historical references culturally shared. From the forties and after Second World War, the urban projects focus more on the consolidated city, or fragments of it, seeking a line of historical continuity with pre-existing environment. There are three kinds of permanences: the geographical aspects, the historical aspects derived from the specific territory and the cultural mnemonic references. So, the plan for Saint-Dié is an expressive example where the city is designed adding analogous shapes: a landscape, an atmosphere, where buildings and environmentterritory resonate mutually.

Public spaces are designed and managed in many different ways. In Hanoi, after the Doi moi policy in 1986, the transfer of the public spaces creation at the neighborhood-level to the private sector has prospered na-ture of public and added a large amount of public space for the city, directly impacting on citizen's daily life, creating a new trend, new concept of public spaces. This article looks forward to understanding the public spaces-making and operating in KDTMs (Khu Do Thi Moi - new urban areas) in Hanoi to answer the question of whether ‘socialization’/privatization of these public spaces will put an end to the urban public or the new means of public-making trend. Based on the comparison and literature review of studies in the world on public spaces privatization with domestic studies to see the differences in the Vietnamese context leading to differences in definitions and roles and the concept of public spaces in KDTMs of Hanoi. Through adducing and analyzing practical cases, the article also mentions the trends, the issues, the ways and the technologies of public-making and public-spaces-making in KDTMs of Hanoi. Win/loss and the relationship of the three most important influential actors in this process (municipality, KDTM owners, inhabitants/citizens) is also considered to reconceptualize the public spaces of KDTMs in Hanoi.

ResumenEl objeto de este texto es la exposición y análisis de los procedimientos de intervención pública en el paisaje urbano de la ciudad de Madrid. El objetivo último de ese análisis es identificar el modelo público para el paisaje urbano en Madrid.  Este texto se centra en la exposición analítica de documentos oficiales antes que en sus conclusiones definitivas, por lo que le corresponde la denominación de Informe.  Este informe se organiza en dos partes: una exposición teórica que enmarca el posterior análisis de instrumentos administrativos de intervención en el paisaje.  Se concibe como parte de la investigación de Tesis Doctoral titulada “Transformación Reciente del Paisaje Comercial en el Centro Histórico”, acotada en un marco temporal de apenas diez años, marcado por la crisis y la desregulación económica, y en un marco territorial limitado al centro histórico de Madrid. Esa investigación se enmarca en una reflexión general sobre la relación entre actividad económica y paisaje urbano. El interés de este informe para la investigación es sobre la utilidad de ese modelo público para el paisaje urbano en Madrid como parámetro para valorar la rentabilidad de los esfuerzos públicos y privados en la mejora de la calidad del paisaje urbano.AbstractThe purpose of this text is the exhibition and analysis of public intervention procedures in the urban landscape of the city of Madrid. The ultimate goal of this analysis is to identify the public model for the urban landscape in Madrid. This text focuses on the analytical exposition of official documents rather than on their final conclusions, for which reason the denomination of Report corresponds. This report is organized in two parts: a theoretical exposition that frames the subsequent analysis of administrative instruments of intervention in the landscape. It is conceived as part of the Doctoral Thesis research titled "Recent Transformation of the Commercial Landscape in the Historic Center", bounded within a period of just ten years, marked by the crisis and economic deregulation, and in a territorial framework limited to the historic center of Madrid. This research is part of a general reflexion on the relationship between economic activity and urban landscape. The interest of this report for the investigation is about the utility of that public model for the urban landscape in Madrid as a parameter to assess the profitability of public and private efforts in improving the quality of the urban landscape.

Asking ‘What is lesbian Sydney?’ and ‘Where is it?’, this article traces the shifting spaces and places of lesbian Sydney in the first decades after the Second World War. In the 1940s and 1950s, when camp bars were overwhelmingly male, lesbians enjoyed a very limited public presence in the city. Many women created lesbian spaces in isolation from a wider community, discreetly setting up house with a female partner and gradually building up a small network of lesbian friends. Groups of women met in each other’s homes or visited the parks and beaches around Sydney and the Central Coast for social excursions. By the 1960s, lesbians were beginning to carve out a more visible public space for themselves at wine bars and cabaret clubs in inner suburbs such as Kings Cross, Oxford Street and the city, and the commercial bar scene grew steadily through the 1970s. However, the influence of feminist and lesbian and gay politics in the 1970s also prompted a rethinking of lesbian spaces in Sydney, with well-known lesbian collective houses challenging older notions of private space and political venues such as Women’s House and CAMP NSW headquarters constituting new bases for lesbian community.

This article explores the relationship between the domestic position of Jewish bourgeois housewives and the larger Swedish, urban landscape at the beginning of the twentieth century. Examining the interior décor, shopping patterns, urban places, and the social, cultural and religious aspects of the domestic spheres of Irene Strauss and Jeannette Ettlinger, this article argues that they consciously used public spaces to establish their individual practices of Jewishness. By entering the gendered space of the Jewish home, accessible through private letters and receipts, this article portrays the bourgeois women as actors with social and economic power. They produced public spaces that communicated either cultural integration or orthodox distinctiveness, thereby constructing diverse strategies for Swedish belonging. These strategies demonstrate the growing religious, social and cultural diversity within the Jewish community in Stockholm during the three last decades before the Second World War.

This paper discusses the literary, artistic, scientific, and educational narratives that are (re)created to facilitate the city’s recovery of memory in the wake of the Holocaust.This is the case with Lublin.The story of the complete destruction of its Jewish quarter in the Second World War is a tragically familiar one in Central Europe, even though it had been silenced and forgotten for decades during the communist period. I would like to analyze an essayistic project that searches for a new language about a place left empty. How could one fill the void by making it mean something to new people, becoming their own narrative, and preserving the presence of the city’s former inhabitants? How is it possible to create a new mythology of a place? I assume that such questions must have been the starting point for essays on Lublin byWładysław Panas (1947–2005), related to the commemoration in the context of urban space. My text comes in four parts. I begin with general information and historical background, as well as an introduction to the analysis of Panas’s essay Oko Cadyka (The Eye of the Tzaddik) − the main subject of my paper − which exemplifies the reflection on the creation of narrative and urban space in contemporary humanities. In the second part, I focus on and contextualize the relationship between text and city that the essay postulates. The third part deals with theoretical approaches to interpretation. The fourth part underlines the scientific and critical aspects of Panas’s text, which questions the language of science − the humanities, historiography, and theory in general. I end with a look at some artistic projects inspired by his images.

ResumenLos centros históricos latinoamericanos, unas de las creaciones más interesantes de nuestra cultura, se enfrentan a profundas mutaciones físicas, sociales, funcionales, medioambientales y sobre todo paisajísticas. El paisaje del espacio público como lugar descubierto, generalmente rodeado de edificios, decorado por estatuas, fuentes, áreas de estancia, vegetación, etc., y destinado al embellecimiento de una ciudad, ha sido concebido para que los ciudadanos se reúnan a percibir la ciudad y a observar el espectáculo arquitectónico de sus principales edificios monumentales. El objetivo de la presente investigación es proponer una nueva metodología para la valoración de la calidad visual del paisaje urbano en áreas de interés patrimonial, considerada desde la visión, que se complementa con otros atributos físico-ambientales, visual-estéticos y socio-psicológicos. Adicionalmente, la calidad visual constituye un componente de la calidad ambiental y de la vida urbana que fomenta el sentido de pertenencia de las personas con su medio natural y construido. Su aplicación a los espacios patrimoniales latinoamericanos lo convierten en una nueva herramienta metodológica para su adaptación.AbstractThe historical centers of Latin America, some of the most interesting creations of our culture, face profound physical, social, functional, environmental and especially landscape changes. The landscape of the public space as a discovered place, generally surrounded by buildings, decorated by statues, fountains, living areas, vegetation, etc., and intended to beautify a city, has been conceived so that citizens come together to perceive the city and to observe the architectural spectacle of its main monumental buildings. The objective of this research is to propose a new methodology for the assessment of the visual quality of the urban landscape in areas of heritage interest, considered from the perspective, which is complemented with other physical-environmental, visual-aesthetic and socio-psychological attributes. Additionally, visual quality constitutes a component of environmental quality and urban life that fosters people's sense of belonging to their natural and built environment. Its application to Latin American heritage spaces make it a new methodological tool for its adaptation.

In this article I analyse the deconstruction of the public/private dichotomy in the city of Paris in Jean Rhys’s Good Morning Midnight (1939). Through the exploration of Sasha’s aimless wandering through Paris in her failed quest for romantic love, this paper aims to explore Rhys’s Paris as a city which is hostile to women who fail to perform conventional standards of femininity. These standards are in turn encouraged and set by the promise of happiness; thus, the mimicry of femininity—whether intentional or not—exposes ongoing power dynamics in gender roles, the construction of the bodies of others through political ideals of happiness and love, and the subversive potential in Rhys’s novel, even if the protagonist is crushed at the end by the private side of the emerging totalitarian regimes on the eve of the Second World War.

In that aspect, buildings role, no matter their architectural qualities, is to shape that void and give it character. If one asks people about their remembrances of cities they have visited, they usually mention places and the activities that took place there. Architecture, great or bad is the referente of Architects. Only some monuments –Eiffel Tower or Sidney´s Opera- which act as the city´s image are worth recalling. The failure of CIAM´s urbanism was not its lack of  quality, even vition, as some of Le Corbusier designs clearly demostrate, but its disregard of public space, merely a left over  spread between isolated building blocks and  highways. A good instrument to understand this fact are the Figure/ Ground  plans, in which the basic shape of buildings and voids are drawn in black and white. In the tradicional city renders, the public spaces have a clear definition, a presence of its own. In any CIAM project –mostly-  or construction, the public realm is the shapless space left over  by buildings, with no hint about use or limits. A clear demonstration is  the no-space around the Philarmonic, the National Library and the Art Gallery in Berlin. This knowlege is sufficiently incorporated into the practice of most Western Designers, but two perverse conditions are part of the everyday´s life of entire populations in the World: In poor Countries there is an urgent need to incorporate slums to the city structure, culture and services.In Asian Cities, mainly in China, inmense areas are demolished overnight and its tradicional fabric replaced by endless rows of anonymous high rise blocks amid a maze of transport elevated structures, with no place left for pedestrians. An old text advices not to let the urgent erase the important. In today´culture both conditions are unfortunately simultaneous.

The ecological processes known to the various manifestations of visual pollution, which is defined as: every element of the physical environment is affected by changes or interventions made by man to the natural and constructed environment, which leads to its distortion and harms the public health of citizens. In order to understand its reasons for reaching a balanced urban scene and thus affecting human health.
