To date, three species of the family Ancorabolidae, three species of the family Argestidae, and one species of the family Rhizothrichidae are known from the deep sea of the Gulf of California. The descriptions of two new species,Eurycletodesparaephippigersp. n.andOdiliacletodessecundussp. n.collected from the Southern Trough of Guaymas Basin at 1440 m and 1642 m depths, respectively, are presented herein. The closest relatives of these two species,E.ephippigerPor, 1964 andO.gracilisSoyer, 1964 are known from the Mediterranean, but some relatives have been reported also from the southern Atlantic.Eurycletodesparaephippigersp. n.is undoubtedly related toE.ephippigerPor, 1964 known from Israel and Banyuls-sur-Mer (France). These two species can be separated by the armature complement of the basis of the maxillule, by the armature complement of the syncoxa of the maxilliped, and by the relative position of the anal operculum.Odiliacletodessecundussp. n.showed to be closely related toO.gracilisSoyer, 1964 known from Banyuls-sur-Mer only. The latter two species can be separated by the armature complement of the syncoxa of the maxilliped, by the structure of the antenna, and by the inner armature complement of the third exopodal segment of the fourth swimming leg.

Herein two new species of the genusSyngastesMonard, 1924 are described from South Korea, with detailed descriptions and illustrations. Both new copepods,Syngastesmulticavussp. nov. andS. pseudofoveatussp. nov., have two inner setae on the first exopodal segment of P2 and P3.Syngastesmulticavussp. nov. most closely resemblesS. gibbosusBartsch, 1999 reported from Australia, as they both have a five-segmented antennule in the female. However,Syngastesmulticavussp. nov. has a rounded body outline instead of the gibbose outline observed inS. gibbosus.Syngastespseudofoveatussp. nov. resemblesS. foveatusBartsch, 1994 in almost all aspects. However, they differ clearly in the number of setae on the first exopodal segment of P2 and P3. We also provide a key to species of the genusSyngastesworldwide. The present study is the first record of the family Tegastidae in Korean waters.

The aim of this study is to analyse the Nephtyidae from the Gulf of California. Previous studies about the family Nephtyidae from the continental shelf of the Gulf include 21 species of which seven have been synonymized by several authors, so that at present only 14 species are recognized. In this study, 1763 specimens of Nephtyidae from the continental shelf of the Gulf of California were examined. Eight species were identified, from which Aglaophamus longicirrata sp. nov. and Aglaophamus foliosa sp. nov. are newly described. Aglaophamus longicirrata sp. nov. is characterized by the presence of very long dorsal cirri in median parapodia and by having 16 rows of subterminal papillae with 3–7 papillae per row, and a pair of middorsal papillae on the proboscis. Aglaophamus foliosa sp. nov. is characterized by foliaceous long dorsal cirri; the proboscis bears 16 rows of subterminal papillae and an irregular number of papillae per row, from 5 to 15. A taxonomic key is presented for the species of Nephtyidae recorded from the continental shelf of the Gulf of California, including the two new species of Aglaophamus.

Abstract. Understanding the ecological processes and connectivity of chemosynthetic deep-sea ecosystems requires comparative studies. In the Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California, Mexico), the presence of seeps and vents in the absence of a biogeographic barrier, and comparable sedimentary settings and depths offers a unique opportunity to assess the role of ecosystem-specific environmental conditions on macrofaunal communities. Six seep and four vent assemblages were studied, three of which were characterised by common major foundation taxa: vesicomyid bivalves, siboglinid tubeworms and microbial mats. Macrofaunal community structure at the family level showed that density, diversity and composition patterns were primarily shaped by seep- and vent-common abiotic factors including methane and hydrogen sulfide concentrations, whereas vent environmental specificities (higher temperature, higher metal concentrations and lower pH) were not significant. The type of substratum and the heterogeneity provided by foundation species were identified as additional structuring factors and their roles were found to vary according to fluid regimes. At the family level, seep and vent similarity reached at least 58 %. All vent families were found at seeps and each seep-specific family displayed low relative abundances (< 5 %). Moreover, 85 % of the identified species among dominant families were shared between seep and vent ecosystems. This study provides further support to the hypothesis of continuity among deep-sea seep and vent ecosystems.

The Tanaidacea are ubiquitous and amongst the most abundant taxa in the deep sea. However, their diversity in submarine canyons remains largely unknown. Here, two new species and a new genus of Paratanaoidea are described. Paranarthrura cousteaui sp. nov. is distinguished by the combination of the following characters: post-cheliped sclerites not fused, presence of one seta in the maxilliped endite, one long midventral seta in cheliped, one penicillate seta in the basis of pereopods 4–6, uropod endopod bi-articulated and uropod exopod shorter than endopod article 1. This species was found at the upper reaches of three Portuguese canyons, Cascais, Setúbal and Nazaré Canyons, and the adjacent open slope, between 897 and 1001 m water depths. Tirana vallis gen. et sp. nov. presents a combination of the characters that define the other two genera of Paranarthrurellidae, Paranarthrurella and Armatognathia, but also unique characters within the family: the antenna, cheliped and uropod are more elongate than the rest of the species; the pereopods 4–6 carpus spines reach at least half of the length of the propodus and the propodus of pereopods 4–6 have ramified subdistal spines. This species was found at the middle reaches of Setúbal Canyon (3214–3219 m water depth).

Two new species of alvinocaridid shrimps are described from a hydrothermal vent field off northeastern Taiwan at depths of 252–300 m. Alvinocaris chelys n. sp. is morphologically very similar to A. williamsi Shank & Martin, 2003 from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and A. alexander Ahyong, 2009 from the southern Kermadec Ridge. These three species can be differentiated by the shape of the postrostral ridge, telson, the second segment of the antennular peduncle and the armature of the meri and ischia of the third pereopod. The second new species, although rather similar to Alvinocaris niwa Webber, 2004 from the Kermadec-Arc, is assigned to a new genus Alvinocaridinides gen. nov., which appears to be intermediate between Shinkaicaris Komai & Segonzac, 2005 and other derived genera including Opaepele Williams & Dobbs, 1995, Chorocaris Martin & Hessler, 1990 and Rimicaris Williams & Rona, 1986. Alvinocaridinides formosa n. sp. differs from Alvinocaris niwa by completely lacking any armature on the ischia of the third to fifth pereopods and by bearing two movable spines at the posterolateral angle of the uropodal exopod. These records constitute the first discovery of the family Alvinocarididae in Taiwanese waters and represent the shallowest occurrence for alvinocaridid shrimps.

AbstractThe morphology and morphometry of nematodes of six species of the family Ceramonematidae is described using light and scanning electron microscopy. In this paper, we describe two new species and redescribe two known species of Ceramonema and one new species each of Pselionema and Pterygonema. Ceramonema altogolfi sp. n. is characterised by the 0.8-1.3 mm long body, 187-247 body annules, weakly developed zygapophyses, presence of intracuticular vacuoles, sexual dimorphism in amphid shape, presence of vaginal sclerotisation, complex gubernaculum and relatively uniform anal and cloacal annules, whilst C. inguinispina sp. n. has a 0.8-1.1 mm long body, 135-191 body annules, weakly developed zygapophyses, presence of intracuticular vacuoles, sexual dimorphism in amphid shape, absence of vaginal sclerotisation, thorn-shaped precloacal projection, plate-like gubernaculum and double cloacal annule. Pselionema psednum sp. n. is distinguished by 1.4-1.7 mm long body, 251-292 body annules, weakly developed zygapophyses, absence of intracuticular vacuoles, sexual dimorphism in amphid shape and Pterygonema mexicanum sp. n. is characterised by having amphids lacking a central thorn-like projection and pharynx with a distinct posterior glandular bulb. Populations of Ceramonema rectum and Ceramonema cf. yunfengi are also described. The male cloacal region of the species examined appears to be a rich potential source of taxonomic characters that have as yet received insufficient attention for this family.

Two new species of Taeniacanthus Sumpf, 1871 (Copepoda, Taeniacanthidae) are described from filefishes (Monacanthidae) caught in the Indo-West Pacific region: T. brayae n. sp. from Pervagor melanocephalus (Bleeker) collected from five localities within the Central Indo-Pacific realm and T. mcgroutheri n. sp. from Monacanthus chinensis (Osbeck) and Paramonacanthus choirocephalus (Bleeker) caught off the Australian coast. Taeniacanthus brayae n. sp. and T. mcgroutheri n. sp. are distinguished from their congeners by the presence of an elongate terminal endopodal segment of the antenna, a spinulated terminal process and one seta on the maxillary basis, six elements on the terminal exopodal segment of legs 2–4 and an armature of II, I, 2 and II, I, 1 on the terminal endopodal segments of legs 2 and 3, respectively. Taeniacanthus brayae n. sp. can be readily distinguished from T. mcgroutheri n. sp. by having one row (rather than multiple rows) of spinules on the large pectinate process of the antenna, four setae (rather than three) on the maxillule and a 3-segmented (rather than 2-segmented) endopod on legs 2–4. New host and/or locality records for the taeniacanthids Cirracanthus monacanthi (Yamaguti, 1939), C. spinosus Dojiri & Cressey, 1987, Nudisodalis acicula Dojiri & Cressey, 1987 and Taeniacanthus aluteri (Avdeev, 1977) parasitic on triggerfishes and filefishes, as well as supplementary morphological information for the females and the first descriptions of the males of C. monacanthi, C. spinosus and N. acicula, are also included.

Three new fossil species from Burmese amber are described, one clearly in family Calamoceratidae, the other two in the highly variable family Odontoceridae. The family Odontoceridae contains 18 disparate genera, but there are no good diagnostic characters, which makes it difficult to place fossil taxa in this family. We here offer a revised diagnosis for the family, highlighting the lack of good diagnostic characters, and the need to use sets of characters to place (extinct) taxa in this family. On this taxonomic basis we describe two new species in the hitherto monotypic fossil genus Palaeopsilotreta Wichard & Wang, 2017 (Odontoceridae), Palaeopsilotreta burmanica sp. nov. and P. cretacea sp. nov., redescribe the type species based on additional information, and describe features of the female, based on two specimens, one of which is embedded adjacent to a male identified as P. xiai. Males of Palaeopsilotreta bear bipectinate antennae; the antennae of the females are simple and filiform. Similarly, bipectinate antennae are present in the third species we describe, Bipectinata orientalis gen. et sp. nov., which otherwise lacks the character combinations associated with the Odontoceridae, but clearly can be assigned to the family Calamoceratidae.

The new tegastid species Smacigastes methanophilus sp. nov. is described from cold-seep samples collected from the Gulf of Mexico in 2006. Besides Smacigastes micheli Ivanenko & Defaye, 2004 and Smacigastes barti Gollner, Ivanenko & Martínez Arbizu, 2008, this is the third species of the genus Smacigastes Ivanenko & Defaye, 2004. To date, this genus contains the only species within the family Tegastidae known from deep-sea habitats. Furthermore, S. methanophilus sp. nov. is the first species of Tegastidae found at cold seeps and associated with tubeworm aggregations. It has the same primitive features as S. micheli but can be distinguished from the latter by the setation of second and third segments of female antennule and second segment of male antennule, the setation of the mandibular palp, the ornamentation of P5 exopod in both sexes, setation of male P5 exopod, form of the female P5 baseoendopod, and the different shape and length of the P5 setae in female. Moreover, both sexes of Smacigastes methanophilus sp. nov. are much smaller than those of S. micheli. Compared to S. barti, S. methanophilus sp. nov. differs in the segmentation and setation of female antennule, the setation of male antennule, setation of mandibular palp, setation of the maxillule, number of endites of the maxilla, number of setae in P1, the ornamentation of female P5 and setation in male P5.
