Consumer perception of insects in non-food products

In order to evolve towards a green and biobased economy, the use of insects can play a vital role for the management of organic waste and its conversion into biomass. The larvae of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens), a high fat containing insect, appear to hold interesting opportunities for companies active in oleo chemistry as well as companies that process the fats and derived products (such as surfactants) into end products, such as detergents, household cleaning products, personal care products and cosmetics. When introducing new green products like these to consumers, an understanding of the perception of insect-based products is necessary to choose appropriate marketing strategies to overcome innovation resistance. Due to the lack of research on this subject, the purpose of this study is to develop an initial understanding of the consumer perception and to explore the factors driving and hindering the adoption of insect-based products. The majority of studies on the subject of insects, is focused on applications in food. Our study aims to fill an existing gap, by focussing on non-food products. A mixed method design was used and consists of a literature study, and a qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis. The results indicate that both novelty seekers and risk avoiders are willing to try insect-based products, but barriers vary per product category. This study is part of the INFACT project, in which green surfactants, based on black soldier fly fats are synthesised and implemented in technical applications.

The present study summarizes the new strategies including advanced equipment and validation parameters of liquid and gas chromatography methods i.e., thin-layer chromatography (TLC), column liquid chromatography (CLC), and gas chromatography (GC) suitable for the identification and quantitative determination of different natural and synthetic bioactive compounds present in food and food products, which play an important role in human health, within the period of 2019–2021 (January). Full characteristic of some of these procedures with their validation parameters is discussed in this work. The present review confirms the vital role of HPLC methodology in combination with different detection modes i.e., HPLC-UV, HPLC-DAD, HPLC-MS, and HPLC-MS/MS for the determination of natural and synthetic bioactive molecules for different purposes i.e., to characterize the chemical composition of food as well as in the multi-residue analysis of pesticides, NSAIDs, antibiotics, steroids, and others in food and food products.

Indonesia government has established sea toll program through Presidential Regulation No.17 in 2017 to support inter-island distribution. Port X in Aceh is one of the ports included in sea toll program. This paper discusses logistic performance m.easure, especially in sea transportation. A Logistic Performance Index (LPI) is proposed as a tool to identify challenges and opportunities in Port X performance. Key indicators which affect the value of logistics performance index will also be studied in this paper. There are several logistic performance measurements for port X based on literature study: quality, delivery cost, transportation cost, and information. Eight indicators affect Port X performance: quality of the commodity, the quantity of the commodity, on time delivery, ship call, sea transportation cost, storage cost, electronic availability, and electronic access. Port X average total index, based on Analytical Hierarchy Process, is 2,557. This value can be considered as quite reasonable. The study limits logistic performance for the arrival route of the container vessel leading to Port X. The final result shows that quality performance indicator (quality quantity of commodity index) has the highest index for all originating port. The second highest index is electronic information availability index. Through this finding, Port X must improve their service and information because it plays a vital role in their performance

The purpose of the present paper is to identify the particular use of marketing strategies for innovative products and to define the features thereof. Innovative food products can be defined as those made of unconventional materials, with the use of the latest technologies and new methods of processing and storage, and/or innovative tools of marketing promotion. In the paper I show that innovative strategy is a leading functional strategy of high-tech enterprises. It involves producing a comprehensive set of measures for improving technological aspects of the production process, changes in the company’s organisational structure, and the implementation of modern management technologies. The strategy requires companies to act consistently, which allows them to position themselves in the market. A change in strategy is a response to changing external conditions. Innovative food products belong to the FMCG market, which is characterised by tough competition and oversupply. Forming effective strategies, creating successful brands and profitable business activity in this market requires an approach tailored to this market. Strategies of leading brands in the FMCG sector include seeking out prospects in emerging markets, acquiring leaders in profitable and attractive segments and forming alliances with competitors.

The Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) enables a fast exchange of information between bodies and institutions involved in the system (EU Member State national food safety authorities, Commission, EFSA, ESA, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Switzerland) in order to respond promptly to the health risks associated with food and feed. Salmonella is an important cause of EU foodborne outbreaks, most frequently reported pathogenic microorganism in food in the last few years. The aim of this study was to analyze RASFF notifications on food products contaminated with Salmonella spp. involving Croatia in the period from 01/01/2014 to 31/12/2018. All data were downloaded from the RASFF database (RASFF portal) and processed in MS Excel 2010. The collected data provided information on the: country(ies) of origin and distribution of the contaminated product, notifying country, product and product category, notification type, risk decision, action taken, distribution status and, for some incidents, a Salmonella spp. serovar. Notifications mainly concerned "poultry meat and poultry meat products". Just over half of the reported food products originated from Poland, Brazil and Italy. Croatia was notifying country in almost half of the published notifications. Majority of the notifications were classified as alert notifications and of serious risk. Most of the Salmonella spp. notifications were based on official controls on the market and on company's own check.
