The hydrogen-bonded interactions in the simple (HNZ)2 dimers, with Z = O and S, were investigated using quantum chemical calculations with the second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation (MP2), coupled-cluster with single, double (CCSD), and triple excitations (CCSD(T)) methods in conjunction with the 6-311++G(2d,2p), aug-cc-pVDZ, and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets. Six-membered cyclic structures were found to be stable complexes for the dimers (HNO)2, (HNS)2, and (HNO–HNS). The pair (HNS)2 has the largest complexation energy (–11 kJ/mol), and (HNO)2 the smallest one (–9 kJ/mol). A bond length contraction and a frequency blue shift of the N–H bond simultaneously occur upon hydrogen bond formation of the N–H···S type, which has rarely been observed before. The stronger the intramolecular hyperconjugation and the lower the polarization of the X–H bond involved as proton donor in the hydrogen bond, the more predominant is the formation of a blue-shifting hydrogen bond.

ABSTRACTWe present an ab-initio calculation of GaN wurtzite (1010) and zinc-blende (110) surface structures and formation energies. Our method employs ultrasoft pseudopotentials and plane-wave basis. These features enable us to obtain accurate results using small energy cut-off and large supercells. The (110) surface shows a Ga-N surface dimer rotation of ∼ 14°, i.e. about one half that of the ordinary III–V non-nitride compounds, and a 5% contraction of the surface bond-length (more than the double that occurring in GaAs). For the (1010) surface, a layer rotation angle of about 11° and a bond-length contraction of 6% has been found. Zinc-blende GaAs (110) and wurtzite ZnO (1010) surfaces have been studied as well, for the sake of comparison. GaAs results are in good agreement with the experimental findings. For ZnO a large bond contraction and a rotation angle of around 11% result. Thus, our findings place GaN closer in behaviour to the highly ionic II–VI compounds than to the non-nitride III–V semiconductors.

Special theory of relativity is one of the difficult subjects of physics to be understood by the students. The current research designed as a qualitative research aim to determine the pre-service physics teachers’ understanding level and the alternative conceptions about three core concepts of special theory of relativity, such as time dilatation, length contraction and reference frames. The data were collected through semi structured interviews and were analyzed by using content analysis. At the end of the analysis process the understanding level of the students was determined to be “complete understanding”, “incomplete understanding” and “misunderstanding”. In order to achieve this, the students’ conceptual frameworks based on the operational definitions made by the students were determined firstly. The findings obtained in this research indicate that high school teachers as well as university instructors should take special care with some points in the teaching of the subjects related with special theory of relativity. This research might be useful to other studies to be done in the future, especially for investigating the students’ mental models related to special theory of relativity. AbstractThe classification of complex or real finite dimensional Lie algebras which are not semi simple is still in its early stages. For example, the nilpotent Lie algebras are classified only up to dimension 7. Moreover, to recognize a given Lie algebra in the classification list is not so easy. In this work, we propose a different approach to this problem. We determine families for some fixed invariants and the classification follows by a deformation process or a contraction process. We focus on the case of 2- and 3-step nilpotent Lie algebras. We describe in both cases a deformation cohomology for this type of algebras and the algebras which are rigid with respect to this cohomology. Other

AbstractAccurate precipitation climatology is presented for tropical depression (TD), tropical storm (TS), and tropical cyclone (TC) over oceans using the recently-released, consistent and high quality precipitation datasets from all passive microwave sensors covering 1998-2012 along with the Automated Rotational Center Hurricane Eye Retrieval (ARCHER)-based TC center positions. Impacts with respect to the direction of both TC movement and the 200-850 hPa wind shear on the spatial distributions of TC precipitation are analyzed. The TC eyewall contraction process during its intensification is noted by a decrease in the radius of maximum rainrate with an increase in TC intensity. For global TCs, the maximum rainrate with respect to the direction of TC movement is located in the down-motion quadrants for TD, TS, and Cat 1-3 TCs, and in a concentric pattern for Cat 4-5 TCs. A consistent maximum TC precipitation with respect to the direction of the 200-850 hPa wind shear is shown in the down shear left quadrant (DSLQ). With respect to direction of TC movement, spatial patterns of TC precipitation vary with basins and show different features for weak and strong storms. The maximum rainrate is always located in DSLQ for all TC categories and basins, except the Southern Hemisphere basin where it is in the down shear right quadrant (DSRQ). This study not only confirms previously published results on TC precipitation distributions relative to vertical wind shear direction, but also provides a detailed distribution for each TC category and TS, while TD storms display an enhanced rainfall rate ahead of the down shear quadrants.

To investigate the cause of the rapid relaxation observed in the epinephrine-stimulated heart, stress relaxation and distensibility have been measured in the isolated perfused cat heart and in isolated papillary muscles. During epinephrine stimulation, distensibility was slightly increased but there was no change in the rate of stress relaxation. This would suggest that the action of epinephrine is confined to the contractile elements without any direct effect on the viscoelastic elements responsible for stress relaxation. The rapid diastolic relaxation observed in these hearts therefore relates to the dynamics of the contraction process rather than to lowered myocardial viscosity.
