Abstract Phase transitions of liposomes are normally studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A suspension of liposomes is subjected to an increase (decrease) of temperature and when heat is absorbed (released), the liposomes transit from a gel (liquid) to a liquid (gel) phase. This endothermic (exothermic) process takes place at a temperature called the melting temperature Tm, which is distinctive of the type of lipids forming the vesicles. The vesicles, though, also modify their size in the transition. Indeed, the thickness of the membranes decreases (increases) because carbon tails misalign (align). Concomitant with the modifications in the membrane thickness, the diameter (D) of the liposomes changes too. Therefore, when they are inspected by light, the scattered signal carries information from such dilatation (contraction) process. We performed careful experiments using dynamic light scattering (DLS) as a function of temperature to detect the size changes of different liposomes. Gaussian fits of the derivatives of the D vs T curves coincide within 1% with thermograms, which hints to the possibility of performing thermodynamic studies of lipid systems employing light.

Typed decorated trees are used by Bruned, Hairer and Zambotti to give a description of a renormalisation process on stochastic PDEs. We here study the algebraic structures on these objects: multiple pre-Lie algebras and related operads (generalizing a result by Chapoton and Livernet), noncommutative and cocommutative Hopf algebras (generalizing Grossman and Larson's construction), commutative and noncocommutative Hopf algebras (generalizing Connes and Kreimer's construction), bialgebras in cointeraction (generalizing Calaque, Ebrahimi-Fard and Manchon's result). We also define families of morphisms and in particular we prove that any Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of typed and decorated trees is isomorphic to a Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of non-typed and decorated trees (the set of decorations of vertices being bigger), through a contraction process, and finally obtain the Bruned-Hairer-Zambotti construction as a subquotient.

Skin aging is a very well-known process setting a gradual worsening of skin mechanical features due to a decline in the production of the extra-cellular matrix machinery and to a concurrent change in the contraction process. To slow this progression, it is crucial to induce the expression of several proteins able to promote elastic fibers formation and tissue repair. Here, the Oenothera biennis cell culture aqueous extract has been investigated from a chemical point of view and then it was tested in vitro, in cell, and in ex vivo experiments as adjuvant in counteracting skin aging. Accordingly, it has been shown that the Oenothera biennis extract was able, by increasing MYLK gene expression, to promote matrix collagen contraction, actin polymerization, and the production of essential ECM proteins.

Abstract In this work we present an alternative method to construct diverse non-relativistic Chern-Simons supergravity theories in three spacetime dimensions. To this end, we apply the Lie algebra expansion method based on semigroups to a supersymmetric extension of the Nappi-Witten algebra. Two different families of non-relativistic superalgebras are obtained, corresponding to generalizations of the extended Bargmann superalgebra and extended Newton-Hooke superalgebra, respectively. The expansion method considered here allows to obtain known and new non-relativistic supergravity models in a systematic way. In particular, it immediately provides an invariant tensor for the expanded superalgebra, which is essential to construct the corresponding Chern-Simons supergravity action. We show that the extended Bargmann supergravity and its Maxwellian generalization appear as particular subcases of a generalized extended Bargmann supergravity theory. In addition, we demonstrate that the generalized extended Bargmann and generalized extended Newton-Hooke supergravity families are related through a contraction process.

AbstractAccurate precipitation climatology is presented for tropical depression (TD), tropical storm (TS), and tropical cyclone (TC) over oceans using the recently-released, consistent and high quality precipitation datasets from all passive microwave sensors covering 1998-2012 along with the Automated Rotational Center Hurricane Eye Retrieval (ARCHER)-based TC center positions. Impacts with respect to the direction of both TC movement and the 200-850 hPa wind shear on the spatial distributions of TC precipitation are analyzed. The TC eyewall contraction process during its intensification is noted by a decrease in the radius of maximum rainrate with an increase in TC intensity. For global TCs, the maximum rainrate with respect to the direction of TC movement is located in the down-motion quadrants for TD, TS, and Cat 1-3 TCs, and in a concentric pattern for Cat 4-5 TCs. A consistent maximum TC precipitation with respect to the direction of the 200-850 hPa wind shear is shown in the down shear left quadrant (DSLQ). With respect to direction of TC movement, spatial patterns of TC precipitation vary with basins and show different features for weak and strong storms. The maximum rainrate is always located in DSLQ for all TC categories and basins, except the Southern Hemisphere basin where it is in the down shear right quadrant (DSRQ). This study not only confirms previously published results on TC precipitation distributions relative to vertical wind shear direction, but also provides a detailed distribution for each TC category and TS, while TD storms display an enhanced rainfall rate ahead of the down shear quadrants.

We introduce a computational framework, namely, a pretopological construct, for mining stock prices’ time series in order to expand a set of stocks by adding other stocks whose average correlations with the set are above a threshold. We increase the threshold with the set’s size to verify group impact in financial crises. This approach is tested by a consecutive expansion process started from a stock of Merrill Lynch & Co., and a consecutive contraction process of the rest. The test’s results and the comparison to graph theory show that our model and pretopology theory are helpful to study stock markets.

AbstractImmunoglobulin heavy chain locus (Igh) VH, D, and JH gene segments are developmentally assembled into V(D)J exons. RAG endonuclease initiates V(D)J recombination by binding a JH-recombination signal sequence (RSS) within a chromatin-based recombination center (RC) and then, in an orientation-dependent process, scans upstream D-containing chromatin presented by cohesin-mediated loop extrusion for convergent D-RSSs to initiate DJH-RC formation1,2. In primary pro-B cells, 100s of upstream VH-associated RSSs, embedded in convergent orientation to the DJH-RC-RSS, gain proximity to the DJH-RC for VH-to-DJH joining via a mechanistically-undefined VH-locus contraction process3-7. Here, we report that a 2.4 mega-base VH locus inversion in primary pro-B cells nearly abrogates rearrangements of normally convergent VH-RSSs and cryptic RSSs, even though locus contraction per se is maintained. Moreover, this inversion activated rearrangement of both cryptic VH-locus RSSs normally in the opposite orientation and, unexpectedly, of normally-oriented cryptic RSSs within multiple, sequential upstream convergent-CBE domains. Primary pro-B cells had significantly reduced transcription of Wapl8, a cohesin-unloading factor, versus levels in v-Abl pro-B lines that lack marked locus contraction or distal VH rearrangements2,9-11. Correspondingly, Wapl depletion in v-Abl lines activated VH-locus contraction and orientation-specific RAG-scanning across the VH-locus. Our findings indicate that locus contraction and physiological VH-to-DJH joining both are regulated via circumvention of CBE scanning impediments.
