Computing education in Taiwan is ineffective. Most teaching efforts in private vocational schools have been devoted to helping students pass tests through a “spoon-feeding” teaching method. Under such constraints, students may lose their long-term competence in practical terms. In this study, the author conducted a series of quasi-experiments to examine the long-term effects of web-mediated problem-based learning (PBL), self-regulated learning (SRL), and their combinations on students’ computing skills over three years. The author re-examined students’ long-term computing skills three years after the start of the related course. Results reveal that effects of web-mediated PBL, SRL, and their combinations on students’ long-term computing skills are significant. The implications for scholars and teachers engaged in online learning were also discussed.

This experimental study aimed at investigating the effect of Problem Based Learning (PBL) and self-assessment (SA) on students’ writing competency and self-regulated learning in Tabanan Regency. This research applied 2x2 factorial design. 96 students were selected as sample through random sampling. Data were collected by test (writing competency) and questionnaire (self-regulation). Students’ writings were scored by analytical scoring rubric. The obtained data were analyzed statistically by MANOVA at 5% significance level. This research discovers: 1) there is a significant effect of PBL which occurs simultaneously and separately on students’ writing competency and self-regulated learning, 2) there is a significant effect of SA which ocurs simultaneously and separately on students’ writing competency and self-regulated learning, 3) there is a significant interaction between teaching model and assessment type on students’ writing competency and self-regulated learning which occurs simultaneously, 4) there is no significant interaction between teaching model and assessment type on students’ writing competency, and 5) there is a significant interaction between teaching model and assessment type on students’ self-regulated learning. This research results implies that PBL and SA should be applied in instruction process as a way to improve the quality of students’ writing competency and self-regulated learning.

Vocational degree earners represent a major portion of the work force in Taiwan. However, the reality of computing education in Taiwan’s vocational schools is that it’s not so practically oriented, revealing much room for improvement. In this context, we conducted a quasi-experiment to examine the effects of applying web-based self-regulated learning, web-based problem-based learning with initiation, and their combination to enhance students’ computing skills. Four classes in successive years, with a total of 177 third-year students, were divided into 2 (SRL vs. non-SRL) × 2 (PBL with initiation vs. PBL without initiation) experimental groups. Results were generally positive. Results revealed that the effects of webenabled SRL, web-enabled PBL with initiation, and their combinations on students’ computing skills have significant differences. We hope that the online teaching method applied in this study is also useful for those teachers engaged in e-learning, specifically, in vocational schools.

This study explored, via quasi-experiments, the effects of the combined training in web-based problem-based learning (PBL) and self-regulated learning (SRL) on low achieving students’ skill development. Two classes of 76 undergraduates in a one-semester course titled ‘Web Page Programming and Website Planning’ were chosen for this study. Results were generally positive, showing enhanced skills of website planning and higher levels of involvement. This study provided an illustration of a promising course design and its associated implementations in the specific context of low achieving students, for which there is lack of research in the current literature.

Abstract Background: Developing self-regulated learning (SRL) in a teacher-centered curriculum is challenging. Previous studies indicate professional identity formation (PIF), or the formation of self-identity with internalized values and norms of professionalism, might improve SRL.We designed a PIF-oriented education format for hybrid problem-based learning (PBL) and tested its effectiveness on SRL in a mixed research method. Methods: A randomized controlled crossover trial was conducted using 112 pre-clinical year students at Jichi Medical University. In the six one-day PBL sessions, Groups A (n = 56, female 18, mean age 21.5y ± 0.7) and B (n = 56, female 11, mean age 21.7y ± 1.0) experienced PIF-oriented pre-PBL learning: Group A had three sessions in the first half, B in the second half. Between-group PIF and SRL levels were compared using Professional Identity Essay (PIE) and Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). A qualitative thematic analysis of potential reasons for PIF improvement was performed using the PIE description. Results: Two-level regression analyses showed moderate improvement of PIF stages over time (R2 = 0.069), regardless of intervention. PIF-oriented pre-PBL learning alone did not significantly improve PIE stages or MSLQ scores. Thematic analysis indicated that PIF-oriented pre-PBL learning helped students recognize realistic difficulties in clinical practice, and articulate professional image and values. However, encounters in extracurricular clinical settings had diverse and meaningful impacts on PIF.Conclusions: Limited effect of PIF-oriented pre-PBL learning on PIF and SRL indicate challenges in SRL-oriented education for pre-clinical year students within a teacher-centered hybrid PBL curriculum.
