Low-cost Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) location sensing algorithm is practical and crucial for urban infrastructure location. Current RFID location algorithms are based on fixed multiple RFID reader or reference points (reader or tag) with known position, which is cost and difficult to deployment in urban environment. The objective of this study is to develop a low-cost location sensing algorithm using RFID technique to locate urban infrastructure. This paper presents an algorithm based on multilateration with the integration of mobile RFID and Global Position System (GPS). The mobility of RFID reader can measure many distances between different RFID reader positions and target tag which represent multilateration. The GPS provides coordination of RFID reader. The location of tag is calculated based on triangle geometric property. The redundant observation is adopted to get the optimum location. In practice, the only one RFID reader is necessary, thus the cost is reduced hardly. The performance and accuracy assessment are conducted in field experiment. The experiment proves that the proposed low-cost location sensing algorithm is able to location the urban infrastructure with smaller position error. The lower cost makes it even more economically feasible than other algorithm.

The directional coupler is applied to isolating RX from TX because of low cost and simplicity compared to the circulator in the radio-frequency identification (RFID) reader. Because of unequal phase velocity between odd and even mode, the drawback of the traditional microstrip directional coupler is poor isolation. In this paper, to obtain a good isolation between RX and TX, a novel directional coupler is proposed to be applied to the UHF RFID system with a single antenna. Measurement result shows that the proposed directional coupler possesses a good isolation of -35dB in operating frequency band.

We discuss the application of internet of things (IOT) in the management of urban infrastructure and study critical technology in IOT. As an important component and critical technology in IOT, radio frequency identification (RFID) system provides an effective method to detect, monitor or control the object and is composed of tag, reader and antenna. At last we design a compact microstrip antenna with low cost and small weight for a RFID system in IOT which can also be used in narrow-band wireless communication.

A miniaturized circularly polarized (CP) antenna for ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio-frequency identification (RFID) reader is designed in the present paper. For the aim of miniaturizing antenna, the square radiating patch is opened by four T-shape slots. This can extend the route of surface current, as a result the operating frequency drops and the size reduces. In additional two diagonal corners of the radiation patch are truncated by a square to achieve CP operation. The designed antenna is calculated and optimized by HFSS. The optimized antenna exhibits satisfied performances, and is therefore suitable for UHF RFID reader applications. The designed antenna shows the advantages of small size, simple structure, and low cost.

In order to put Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) in a hybrid system, this paper presents the design and implementation of a RFID reader/router that can obtain information of both RFID tags and WSN sensor nodes and transmit the information through the WSN to the PC server. The RFID reader and WSN router are combined with both hardware and software. In hardware structure, CC2530 is used as micro controller and RF module for ZigBee wireless communication, and MF RC522 is used as reader RF chip. The software deals with both identity and sensing information and controls the routing. Experiment results show that the RFID reader/router achieves long distance identification, flexibility, scalability, and low cost. It also provides reliable and secured data transmission and broadens the communication range and application scope of RFID readers.

The electromagnetic (EM) imaging technique at mm-band 60 GHz is proposed for data encoding purpose in the chipless Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems. The fully printable chipless RFID tag comprises tiny conductive EM polarizers to create high cross-polar radar cross-section. Synthetic aperture radar approach is applied for formation of the tag's EM-image and revealing the tag's content. The achieved high data encoding capacity of 2 bits/cm2in this technique based on a fully printable tag is very convincing for many applications. The system immunity to multipath interference, bending effect, and printing inaccuracy suggests huge potentials for low-cost item tagging. Tags are also readable through a tick paper envelop; hence secure identification is provided by the proposed technique.

This overview discusses how precision sheep management could be utilised in the Australian sheep industry to improve production efficiency and reduce animal welfare concerns due to low monitoring frequency by stockpeople. The concept of precision sheep management is described. This is a system in which sheep are managed as individuals or small groups rather than as a (whole) flock. Precision sheep management utilises the application of radio frequency identification technology, enabling producers to better monitor sheep in extensive situations, and contribute to improved efficiency of management and sheep welfare. Examples of combining radio frequency identification with other technologies such as walk-over-weighing and Pedigree Matchmaker are discussed. These technologies provide producers with tools to improve the cost effectiveness of, and labour efficiency associated with, collecting data on individual animals. The combined technologies should also improve consistency and reliability of information, enhancing decision-making by producers, for example, from regular monitoring of biometric variables such as liveweight, or calculating breeding values to enable superior genetic comparisons over time.

Purpose Radio frequency identification tags for passive sensing have attracted wide attention in the area of Internet of Things (IoT). Among them, some tags can sense the property change of objects without an integrated sensor, which is a new trend of passive sensing based on tag. The purpose of this paper is to review recent research on passive self-sensing tags (PSSTs). Design/methodology/approach The PSSTs reported in the past decade are classified in terms of sensing mode, composition and the ways of power supply. This paper presents operation principles of PSSTs and analyzes the characteristics of them. Moreover, the paper focuses on summarizing the latest sensing parameters of PSSTs and their matching equipment. Finally, some potential applications and challenges faced by this emerging technique are discussed. Findings PSST is suitable for long-term and large-scale monitoring compared to conventional sensors because it gets rid of the limitation of battery and has relatively low cost. Also, the static information of objects stored in different PSSTs can be identified by a single reader without touch. Originality/value This paper provides a detailed and timely review of the rapidly growing research in PSST.

In this paper, an algorithm for the inertial sensors errors reduction in a strap-down inertial navigation system, using several miniaturized inertial sensors for each axis of the vehicle frame, is conceived. The algorithm is based on the idea of the maximum ratio-combined telecommunications method. We consider that it would be much more advantageous to set a high number of miniaturized sensors on each input axis of the strap-down inertial system instead of a single one, more accurate but expensive and with larger dimensions. Moreover, a redundant system, which would isolate any of the sensors in case of its malfunctioning, is obtained. In order to test the algorithm, Simulink code is used for algorithm and for the acceleration inertial sensors modeling. The Simulink resulted sensors models include their real errors, based on the data sheets parameters, and were conceived based on the IEEE analytical standardized accelerometers model. An integration algorithm is obtained, in which the signal noise power delivered to the navigation processor, is reduced, proportionally with the number of the integrated sensors. At the same time, the bias of the resulted signal is reduced, and provides a high redundancy degree for the strap-down inertial navigation system at a lower cost than at the cost of more accurate and expensive sensors.
