RETHINKING THE FUTURE OF THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

ABSTRACT In a post-COVID world, how can higher education embrace unforeseen changes and enable self-starting, entrepreneurial students to thrive? The interdisciplinary design firm Sasaki, has learned from its experience in the planning and implementation of university campuses around the world that a nimble, multi-faceted 21st century living-learning education positions universities to be adaptable for years to come. We argue that flexibility must be integrated at the planning level to break down silos and support interdisciplinary pedagogies inside and out of the classroom. Campus master plans need to embrace the idea of the plan as a “living document” or framework that can adapt to future needs. Designers and educators must also work together to harness the next generation of technology to create transparent, accessible and impactful learning environments. Flexible plans, buildings, and landscapes can connect different disciplines, integrate the latest technology, stitch together the campus, and encourage a lifelong learning mentality. The following case studies drawn from Sasaki’s practice in the United States, Asia, and Latin America will be used to support our argument: Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Anant National University, The Lawrenceville School, Xinyang University, Syracuse University, and Dartmouth College.

A hurricane striking the Chinese coast is ten times as lethal as one hitting the United States. The number of U.S. victims is limited because of better precautions, warning systems, and evacuation methods. More effective observation and communication can save lives. A century ago, hurricanes killed around 7,000 Americans every year, whereas nowadays there are only very few hurricanes of the lethality of Katrina. That progress has yet to reach every corner of Earth, says Guus Berkhout regretfully. This Dutch geophysicist has immersed himself in the mechanisms of disasters and disaster prevention since the beginning of his scientific career—first as professor of seismic imaging and later as professor of innovation at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. We talked to him at the university campus that lies 3 meters below sea level. At his laboratory, Berkhout analyzes the early warning systems and contingency plans that will be needed to protect both his lab and his compatriots. “We can’t stop earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, or tidal waves from happening,” he stresses. “And we may never be able to predict hurricanes or earthquakes with sufficient accuracy. Nor can we hope to prevent people from living in dangerous places. They are simply too attractive.” Human beings indeed seem addicted to living on the edge of catastrophe. The World Bank has calculated that a fifth of all countries are under permanent threat of natural disaster, with some 3.4 billion people—roughly half the world’s population—at heightened risk of being killed by one. Yet unsafe regions are often exceptionally popular places to live and work, one reason being that floodplains and the slopes of volcanoes are highly fertile. The climate is milder along the coast, the soil better, and transport more efficient than farther inland. Even the likelihood of earthquakes isn’t enough to persuade people to live elsewhere, as witnessed by some of the most densely populated areas of California and Japan. Current migration trends—moving to where the action is—suggest that the proportion of people living in unsafe areas will only increase.

The concept of the university campus and research, taken up the development process of the universities, presented examples from the world and Turkey. Master plans, sustainable master plans and landscape master plans in university campuses were compiled and supported with examples. According to the survey, which examined 20 universities in 16 of the world where the campus master plan, which examined 20 universities in Turkey 12 patients which were put forward in the campus master plan. World in 7 of 10 universities surveyed across the campus landscape master plan that, while Turkey’s 10 universities discussed in general only 2 of the campus landscape master plan was put out to be. Suggestions regarding the necessity of preparing master plan and landscape master plan in university campuses are presented.

Over the past decade, there has been a growth in the number of hotels built on university campuses, in Europe, Asia and the United States. Originally, such hotels were often associated with a university’s hotel school and their hospitality programme; however, an increasing number of full-service campus hotels have recently been developed, with no such connections. Through 30 interviews with Heriot-Watt University staff and students, this study explores their perceptions of a newly built commercial hotel on their campus. The findings highlighted the different opinions held by students and staff as to the benefits of a campus hotel and suggested that they were viewed by both as contested hospitality spaces. However, this study submits that if they were more welcoming to students and staff and were better aligned with the ethos of the university, this would aid in their acceptance into the wider university community.

Chinese international students have been the largest growing number of international students on U.S. college and university campuses for the last ten years. However, there is minimal research literature that pertains to Chinese international students’ experiences on U.S. campuses and currently no research literature that reflects the entirety of their experience studying in the U.S. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to give a voice to Chinese international students who are preparing for the university-to-work transition to better understand their experiences as international students in the United States, specifically the types of transitional stressors they experienced and how they coped with these stressors. Five major themes and the essence of the participants emerged from the data analysis and are presented, discussed, and implication for campus based mental health professionals are provided.

Abstract Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had high incidence rates at institutions of higher education (IHE) in the United States, but the transmission dynamics in these settings are poorly understood. It remains unclear to what extent IHE-associated outbreaks have contributed to transmission in nearby communities. Methods We implemented high-density prospective genomic surveillance to investigate these dynamics at the University of Michigan and the surrounding community during the Fall 2020 semester (August 16–November 24). We sequenced complete severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) genomes from 1659 individuals, including 468 students, representing 20% of cases in students and 25% of total cases in Washtenaw County over the study interval. Results Phylogenetic analysis identified >200 introductions into the student population, most of which were not related to other student cases. There were 2 prolonged student transmission clusters, of 115 and 73 individuals, that spanned multiple on-campus residences. Remarkably, <5% of nonstudent genomes were descended from student clusters, and viral descendants of student cases were rare during a subsequent wave of infections in the community. Conclusions The largest outbreaks among students at the University of Michigan did not significantly contribute to the rise in community cases in Fall 2020. These results provide valuable insights into SARS-CoV-2 transmission dynamics at the regional level.

This chapter explores the existence of therapeutic jurisprudential approach in the present laws and guidelines that may address sexual harassment in the university campuses in Delhi, India. It has been seen that sexual harassment in the college campuses has often been overlooked as courtship problems between young adults. In this course, the trauma and victimization of women had also been overlooked. This chapter suggests that university campus sexual harassment may be exhaustive and it may include various forms of harassment including physical touching, verbal sexual bullying to even graver offences like molestation. This chapter researches on several forms of sexual harassments which are prevalent in the university campuses and which may defy the existing regulations due to the patriarchal social setup. It further researches on needs of therapeutic jurisprudence to deal with such problems.

This reaction apparently proceeded by the coupling of the metalated lac­tone with a propargylic carbocationic species. Benjamin List of the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung developed (Angew. Young-Ger Suh of Seoul National University used (Chem. Commun. 2015, 51, 9026) a Pd catalyst to cyclize 23 to (−)-deguelin 24. John Montgomery of the University of Michigan showed (Org. Lett. 2015, 17, 1493) that the Ni-catalyzed reduc­tive cyclization of 25 to 26 proceeded with high diastereoselectivity.

The Australian National University, the Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Trust and the University of Virginia Law School have established an annual Menzies Lecture Series. The Lectures are held in honour of Sir Robert Menzies and mark his contribution to the law and public life. The Lectures are given in alternate years at the Law Schools of the University of Virginia and the Australian National University. The Lectures will be published in the “Federal Law Review”. The first Menzies Lecturer was The Honourable Sir Anthony Mason of the High Court of Australia who visited the University of Virginia in October 1985. The following article is based on Sir Anthony's lecture.
