Family of Information System Meta-Artifacts

Development of the informative classification scheme for information system artifacts would be highly useful for design researchers in focusing and organizing their research projects and identifying gaps. There have been few dated attempts at IS classification mostly focusing on intra-organizational systems. This chapter stresses the need for newer frameworks, which would accommodate for recent developments in IS from the design-type research perspective. The chapter outlines one possible approach, which incorporates individuals, groups, organizations and markets as possible components. Classification could span through the layers of the representational framework presented earlier to produce the families of meta-requirements and synthetic and technological meta-systems. Design research frontier helps in identifying possible developments from the existing meta-systems towards true future system forms. Along this path design researchers are expected to encounter phantom forms.

Beyond the usual energy efficiency of buildings, industrial energy efficiency involves major politico-economical and environmental challenges, among which the emergence of eco-industrial parks and symbioses. Solving these challenges require reliable methodologies and tools. Having interviewed some major industrial energy stakeholders, it appeared that despite of their motivation, energy efficiency projects were not really successful because of the difficulty in identifying adequate simulation methodologies and/or tools. Moreover, in spite of multiple research projects in industrial energy efficiency, it seems that previous research works do not sufficiently support a systematic and integration view. In this paper, we propose a critical review and a categorization of energy efficiency research methodologies and tools. The analysis of these solutions results in the building of an inventory of more than 50 modeling and simulation software tools. Furthermore, a positing matrix is designed in order to map energy efficiency solutions according to identified granularity levels of industrial systems as well as their marketing maturity level.


The concept of a design theory includes, among others, the components of meta-requirements and meta-systems. As an artifact, according to Simon, it is characterized in terms of its outer and inner environments, and the interface, design-type research projects may focus on one or another aspects of meta-artifacts. The purpose of this chapter is to describe a representational framework incorporating different views of meta-artifacts. The chapter introduces such a framework based on Zachman’s model for information architecture. The two dimensional model includes perspectives and categories dimensions. The former is defined in terms of four layers, including analytical, synthetic, technological, and implementation layers. The latter includes the categories of motivation, structure, behavior, and instantiation. At each layer alternative meta-artifact conceptualizations may be proposed by different researchers, implying a third dimension in the framework. A complete design research work on any given layer would correspond to a research project. A work targeting the entire matrix would constitute a design-type research program. Efforts by different design researchers on alternative conceptualizations could be regarded as research stream.

AbstractHealthcare systems are under strain, this creates a challenge for designers to develop solutions for better health and care delivery. This paper presents a sandbox of illustrative design themes used to improve health systems based on state of the art research projects. These were collated from presentations at The Second International Meeting on Healthcare Systems Design Research, held at DTU-Technical University of Denmark. Attending groups were mapped based on their research keywords, target journals and methodologies in order to gain insight on the communities research landscape.

The paper gives a report on the Karolinska Hospital Information System in three parts.In part I, the information problems in health care delivery are discussed and the approach to systems design at the Karolinska Hospital is reported, contrasted, with the traditional approach.In part II, the data base and the data processing system, named T1—J 5, are described.In part III, the applications of the data base and the data processing system are illustrated by a broad description of the contents and rise of the patient data base at the Karolinska Hospital.

The transformation of China's design innovation industry has highlighted the importance of design research. The design research process in practice can be regarded as the process of knowledge production. The design 3.0 mode based on knowledge production MODE2 has been shown in the Chinese design innovation industry. On this cognition, this paper establishes a map with two dimensions of how knowledge integration occurs in practice based design research, which are the design knowledge transfer and contextual transformation of design knowledge. We use this map to carry out the analysis of design research cases. Through the analysis, we define four typical practice based design research models from the viewpoint of knowledge integration. This method and the proposed model can provide a theoretical basis and a path for better management design research projects.

ASTIS offers over 83,000 records that provide freely available access to publications, including research and research projects, about Canada's north. This database is a product of the Arctic Institute of North America at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada which also maintains subsidiary regional, subject, and initiative-based databases. The subsidiary databases are all housed within and accessible through the main ASTIS database. Examples of the smaller databases include: ArcticNet Publications Database, the Nunavik Bibliography, and the Northern Granular Resources Bibliographic Database. ASTIS offers the ability to browse through its access points, including its own thesauri, thus permitting users to select and use a variety of free-text and controlled search terms.

Within a changing research world, international collaboration has become even more important in achieving scientific success. Given the increased need and desire for multinational research, the actors are forced to identify appropriate funding sources. Whereas, science knows no international boundaries, support for scientific research, including in chemical sciences, is mostly provided by the national funding organizations. This is particularly true for the chemical sciences, where most research projects are relatively small in size and with respect to the number of involved PIs. Traditionally, national organizations are reluctant to provide funds to non-domestic researchers, and in practice, funding truly international research projects can be a real challenge for a variety of technical and bureaucratic reasons. In an effort to change this, an international Committee on Chemistry Research Funding (CCRF)—backed by several leading funding organizations—was established by IUPAC in December 2007 to promote increased international collaboration and networking in the global chemistry community. The following report gives a short overview on the history of IUPAC’s involvement in service for chemistry research funding and on the most recent developments.

TIANDITU (Map World) is the public version of the National Platform for Common Geospatial Information Service, and the travelling channel is TIANDITU-based geographic information platform for travelling service. With the development of tourism, traditional ways for providing travelling information cannot meet the needs of travelers. As such, the travelling channel of TIANDITU focuses on providing travel information abundantly and precisely, which integrated the geographic information data of TIANDITU Version 2.0 and the authoritative information resources from China National Tourism Administration. Furthermore, spatial positioning, category and information query of various travelling information were offered for the public in the travelling channel. This research mainly involves three important parts: the system design, key technologies of the system design and application examples. Firstly, this paper introduced the design of TIANDITU-based geographic information system for travelling service, and the general and database design were described in detail. The designs for general, database and travelling service above should consider lots of factors which illustrated in the paper in order to guarantee the efficient service. The process of system construction, the content of geographic information for travelling and system functions of geographic information for travelling are also proposed via diagram in this part. Then several key technologies were discussed, including the travelling information integration for main node and among nodes, general architecture design and management system for travelling channel, web portals and system interface. From the perspective of main technologies, this part describes how TIANDITU travelling channel can realize various functions and reach the requirements from different users. Finally, three application examples about travelling information query were listed shortly. The functions and search results are shown clearly in this part. In all, TIANDITU-based geographic information system for travelling service aimed to integrate the travelling information resources from national, provincial and municipal levels, and finally realized to provide "one stop" travelling service for users in the end.
