Designing wireless video communication system is a challenging task due to high error rates of wireless channels, limited and dynamically varying bandwidth availability, and low energy and complexity requirements of portable multimedia devices. Scalable video coders having excellent rate-distortion performance are most suited to cope with time varying bandwidth of wireless networks, but encoded bits are extremely sensitive to channel errors. This chapter presents a reliable video communication system exploring opportunities offered by various network layers for improved overall performance, while optimizing the resources. More specifically, cross-layer approach for Unequal Error Protection (UEP) of scalable video bitstream is the main theme of this chapter. In UEP, the important bits are given a higher protection compared to the other bits. Conventionally, UEP is achieved by using Forward Error Correction (FEC) at the application layer. However, UEP can also be provided at the physical layer using hierarchical modulation scheme. In this chapter, the authors discuss cross-layer design methodology for UEP that rely on interaction between the application layer and the physical layer to achieve reliable and high quality end-to-end performance in wireless environments. The discussion is mainly focused for wavelet coded video, but it is applicable to other embedded bitstreams as well.

Wireless video communication is challenging due to vulnerability of media bitstreams to channel distortions. Investigation has been carried out on wireless video channel under tight networking resource budget. One of the challenges is the impact of channel errors on the quality of media streams with high motion activity. Motion activity in this context defines the magnitude of activity displacement in video sequence. Based on the analysis, Media Motion-based Resource Distribution (MRD) is proposed to maximize the average received video quality over wireless system, by regulating the resource distribution of the media streams based on their motion activity characteristics. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can improve the average received video quality performance under tight resource constraints budget. Video delivery application over wireless network has become increasingly important in recent years. For achieving more flexible video streams transmission, the scalable extension of the H.264/AVC standard has been developed, as well as which is combined with temporal, spatial and quality scalabilities to adapt efficiently the wireless bandwidth resource. In this paper, a cross-layer optimization for robust H.264 scalable video delivery over WiMAX network is proposed. In order to obtain a better delivery performance, the proposed method is used the hierarchical B-picture approach to classify video packets into different priorities. In the cross-layer optimization, the scalable video and packet classifier are proposed at the application layer, and the packet priority and queue allocation are used at the MAC layer. Finally, it is shown by NS2 simulations that the proposed method provides more stable wireless bandwidth and also achieves a better quality of the video streaming delivery.

This paper discusses the design method of economical and practical HART protocol communication system, and describes the research scheme in detail, according to the hierarchy of the system protocols: the physical layer, data link layer and application layer. This scheme includes the design of ARM embedded controller module, modulation and demodulation module and USB interface module and other components. According to the effect of the final product used in the field bus network, it is proved that the operation is stable, accurate, simple and easy.
