Beyond Knowledge Management

The authors outline trends in managing knowledge, introduce the emerging framework of knowledge governance, and expand its scope. The major approaches of classical knowledge management, distilled to cook-book definitions and consultant practices, are increasingly viewed as inadequate in addressing the growing complexity of information and knowledge flows in modern organizations and societies dealing with rapidly changing environments. Reflecting a new normative push towards conceptual innovation, knowledge governance has emerged as a new paradigm to describe, understand, and analyze the expanding “knowledge domain” in a holistic and comprehensive way. Knowledge governance involves the design of structures and mechanisms to support the processes of sharing and creating knowledge. Knowledge governance has two main interpretation levels in the literature: the company- (micro-) and the national (macro-) level. The authors propose a three-layer model adding a layer of “global” knowledge governance. Analyzing and separating the main issues in this way, we can reformulate the focus of knowledge governance research and practice in all layers.

With the creation of the Internet and the continued evolution of technologies in GIS, networking, and knowledge management, access to geospatial information is a critical component of research and practice. Interoperability is the “new paradigm for joining heterogeneous computer systems into synergistic units that facilitate a more efficient use of geographic information resources” (Harvey, Kuhn, Pundt, Bishr, & Riedemann, 1999, p. 213). As geographers reassess the description of geographic methodologies and techniques across different platforms in the online environment, so have researchers in other disciplines assessed the use of applied geographic techniques for a wide variety of analysis. Such efforts have led some researchers to use new descriptive classifications to identify functionalities in the new scholarship, such as in creating new ontologies for GIS (Fonseca, Davis, & Cmara, 2003; Goodchild, 2004; Goodchild & Haining, 2004; Mark, Skupin, & Smith, 2001). This chapter examines the impact of these new ontologies, reviews the impact standards have on access and issues for end-users in accessing geospatial information.

At the beginning of the 21st century it can be seen that social-economic and environmental problems have become so complex that to solve or handle them a more efficient and global knowledge is needed. Due to of this situation - and pressure of social – economic development – in developed societies the unfolding knowledge industry (knowledge business) has become separated and a dynamic growing production – supply sector. Traditional management concentrates on tangible tools, but knowledge management prefers intangible areas, such as learning and knowledge. This shows that to measure and analyze intellectual resources efficiently is not a trivial task. Globalization, decreasing life cycles, the role of knowledge in R&D (research and development) result in continuously changing demands of products, suppliers and processes which all demand to renew application procedures (for example demand of innovation). On the basis of these ideas further questions can be put. How can Hungarian small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) meet the demands of the new economy? How is knowledge creation, sharing, altogether knowledge management, used in everyday life? How can a company help individual and organizational learning? This two - year research has tried to find answers to these questions. In the research qualitative and quantitative techniques were used. In the course of investigations of the possibilities of SMEs breaking free, organizational knowledge was examined from 3 different viewpoints: intellectual capital, knowledge investigation, knowledge strategy. The results were verified from the view of secondary innovation. There are very important roles of SMEs, especially the ones based on knowledge and on human capital. This paper shows a small but stressed segment of the results. Key words: innovation, knowledge, knowledge management, SME, strategy.

The notion of innovation underpins many studies of change within the literatures of retail management and the new retail geography. However, conceptualisation of the innovation process within retailing has remained surprisingly partial, with insufficient attention being given to the processes of knowledge management and learning within the firm. The authors illustrate the importance of such themes by reference to the key organisational and technological changes surrounding the development of self-service and supermarket retailing in Britain during the postwar years 1945–65. A conceptual framework derived from a reading of the business-management and economic geography literatures is employed to analyse the innovation transfer and related knowledge-management processes that influenced retail change during this critical period.

Purpose This study aims to propose an integrated model to examine the impact of knowledge governance, knowledge sharing and absorptive capacity (ACAP) on project performance in the context of project-based organizations (PBOs). This study also examines the moderating role of social processes on the relationships among these variables. Design/methodology/approach To test the proposed model, cross-sectional data were collected regarding projects from 133 PBOs in Pakistan’s information technology/software industry. The data were analyzed using the partial least squares – structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) method and PRCOESS tool. Finally, this study also uses causal asymmetry analysis to check asymmetric relationship in the key constructs. Findings The results generally support the proposed model. Knowledge governance and knowledge sharing are important antecedents for improving the ACAP of the project, which in turn significantly improves project performance. Additionally, social processes positively moderate the relationship between knowledge sharing and ACAP, as well as between ACAP and project performance. Research limitations/implications The findings suggest that PBOs should invest in developing a knowledge governance system that guides and stimulates knowledge sharing within and between projects. This would boost the ACAP of projects and lead to superior project performance. Originality/value This study addresses the important issue of knowledge management in IT/software projects. It proposes a unique model that integrates the key constructs of knowledge management and describes their effect on project performance.

Abstract Objective: The main goal of this paper is to visualize and draw the intellectual and cognitive structures of information retrieval (IR) in the medical sciences through the use of Science Mapping. Methods: This Scientometrics research has been undertaking using Mapping Knowledge Domain (MKD) methods and drawing scientific maps to analyze scientific products and show their trends. In this study, we recruited all documents indexed in the Web of Science database (WOS), with the topic of storing and retrieval of information in medical sciences. To analyze the results, 3 software SciMAT-v1.1.04, VOSviewer-v1.6.14, CitNetExplorer_v1.0.0 were used. Results: Our results show that most scientific productions in this field fall into two categories: 1. Effective methods of organizing information and 2. Application and operation of IR system in the process of intelligent questioning and answering, and analyzing information behaviors of physicians and health professionals". The results showed that the similarity index increased over time from 0.43 to 0.71. Analysis of the findings shows that Similarity measures, Expert systems, Concepts, Experience, Answers, and Multi-model IR clusters are considered as mature and completely centralized clusters in the first quarter of the strategic chart. Conclusions: The effectiveness of scientific documents based on answering clinical questions and focusing on health professionals' information behaviors has increased compared to search methods and tools.

Knowledge Management (KM) is an organization-wide, strategic change management initiative dealing with people, processes, and Information Communication Technology (ICT) to achieve a competitive advantage through learning, productivity improvement, and innovation. Based on the current literature review of KM and its challenges in global business, a general framework for KM in terms of leadership, organization, and ICT is proposed. The role of leadership includes developing an international strategy for KM, executing strategic change management, practicing a mix of transformational and transactional leadership style, and developing KM performance metrics. The organizational parameters include learning, processes, culture, and organizational structure. ICT plays a crucial role in the learning and processes to acquire, store, share, and apply knowledge. Some of the KM challenges in global business include global leadership competencies and strategy, project-based flexible global virtual teams, global knowledge integration, and working with ICT gaps across different economies.

The recent adoption of cloud computing, Web 2.0 (web as a platform), and Big Data technologies have become the main driver of the paradigm shift. For higher education, choosing the right platform for a next generation of Learning Management System (LMS) namely LMS 2.0 is becoming more important than choosing a tool in the new paradigm. This chapter discusses factors for higher institution in determining a future direction for its LMS to take advantage of pervasive knowledge management, efficiency and effectiveness of operations. Literature studies have deployed for this study to portray the state of future LMS initiative. We found that the trends of cloud computing and big data will be predominant factor in viewing future LMS adoption and implementation. LMS 2.0 can be a solution to make learning systems in a higher education is flexible in terms of resources adoption, quality of learning, knowledge management, and implementation.
