Effective Virtual Learning Environment through the Use of Web 2.0 Tools

The use of social networking sites and Web 2.0 tools is increasing. Research shows that education via Web 2.0 tools increases students' motivation and their interest in the learning. Therefore, a teaching environment can be created using social networking sites in which Web 2.0 tools allow effective learning. In this chapter, some of the Web 2.0 tools available for effective virtual learning environment creation are examined. Suggestions are provided regarding possible uses of tools such as Classmint, Pinterest, Voki, Screenleap, Pageflip-flap, Youtube, Prezi, Secondlife, Animoto, Sketchfu, and Quizrevolution, and their positive effects on students.

A Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is an accumulation of incorporated soft-ware components, empowering the administration of web-based learning (online learning, e-learning). The quality of VLE is indispensable for the accomplishment of e-learning goals and responsible to engage students during web based learning. The attributes of existing VLES does not completely meet with the requirements of today’s e-learning. Consequently, decreases students’ interest, participation and engagement with web-based e-learning. In contrast, the learners’ engagement and participation are higher in social networking sites (SNS). For this reason, many researchers believe that the inclusion of features, similar to SNSs, in VLE may in-crease its effectivity. The goal of this research article is to investigate existing e-learning platform and make a room for SNSs and online tools for e-learning. The paper proposes an integrated model to enhance existing e-learning environment by incorporating the strength of SNSs and other potential tools with VLEs. This re-search article will provide a good direction and new thoughts for the researchers of technology supported learning-domain.

This chapter describes one of the Web 2.0 technologies, Social Networking Sites (SNS). A definition of SNS is offered, as is a short history of these sites. The existing research is reviewed and organized to summarize what we know about SNS usage (from the perspectives of student use, general population use and organizational use), and what we know about the antecedents and outcomes of SNS use. The chapter concludes with discussion of new developments, challenges and opportunities. There are many opportunities for future research and organizational applications of SNS as SNS adoption grows at incredible rates.

Due to its versatility, virtual technology is being widely employed in different domains, from industry to amusement. The possibility to adopt this technology in early product/service design is going to bring positive effects such as the reduction of costs associated with the production of physical prototypes and the generation of a more effective knowledge of users’ feedback. This study proposes a preliminary methodology to evaluate users’ engagement in interacting with a virtual environment that consists of the integration between a self-report method (the user engagement scale questionnaire) and a method based on facial expression recognition. Results reported in this paper show that the two methodologies generate different types of knowledge which can be used to fit users’ needs and expectations. Even if focused on a specific case study, i.e., the evaluation of the engagement in a virtual learning environment, this paper aims to propose a methodology that can be applied to all kinds of virtual products.

This paper investigated application of web 2.0 to private university libraries of northern part ofNigeria based on Mannes theory which emphasizes on changing scenario of librarianship withthe presence of the web, (10) private university libraries website which are of quality and ICTcompliant by Nigerian standard were surveyed to identify the presence of web 2.0 toolapplication and purpose for application. Only (4) 40% had applied web 2.0 tool, the mostapplied web tool was WebOPAC followed by social networking sites, and (1) private universitylibrary had applied RSS, no other web tool have been applied. Even with the web 2.0 boom andadvantages web 2.0 provides to library professional for interaction, the application is still verymuch low in Nigerian libraries. The study recommends Training of library professionals,provision of ICT infrastructure, restructuring of library school curriculum.

In light of the increasing importance of Social Networking Sites (SNSs) for both personal and professional relationships, the aim of this work is to contribute to the knowledge framework regarding the interactive behaviour of Internet users, particularly within Web 2.0, describing its evolution from Web 1.0. Moreover, this paper analyses the different behaviours on the Web by people who use or not use SNSs, as well as to determine whether any such differences are significant in order to discover the reasons why these people participate. As results, initial characterization of the users themselves is followed by an analysis of the main differences between users and non-users of these applications. With this information, companies can play an active role in this Social Web by becoming company 2.0 and participating actively in already existing SNSs or creating their own social network service.

The Virtual Learning Environment is becoming a popular learning platform among various educational institutions in delivering a vibrant and effective learning environment. It enables many school libraries to perform their role in improving services and supporting the school community. The researcher examined the status of Brighton College Abu Dhabi Library’s VLE based on users’ preferences and usage. The researcher surveyed pupils, teachers, and administrators and used frequency distribution to show results. The findings revealed how the library VLE could further be improved and marketed to strengthen its value to the community. Along with this, the included sample of the library VLE content structure and each content’s description can serve as a guide in designing a library VLE.

What role does social presence play in student engagement in virtual learning? and, What are the social presence factors influencing the effective learning environment? The method used to answer the pending research questions was the integrative literature review utilizing a six-step format. Authors conducted a literature review search utilizing the descriptors of virtual learning and social presence. From there articles were identified, selected, and synthesized according to the research questions. This research was informed by the Community of Inquiry Framework as the theoretical foundation from which the results were concluded. Based on results of emerging themes, the authors present the Effective Virtual Learning Model as a foundational basis for theory, research, and more importantly, practice.

This chapter reports on the evaluation of language learning SNSs carried out by “expert students” who are training to become Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. While stressing the positive features available on these sites and novel ways in which they can enable personalised language learning, this study also focuses on some troublesome aspects that occur when learners engage with Web 2.0 tools. It discusses how initial motivation towards these tools can turn into frustration, mirroring the results of a previous autoethnographic study carried out on SNSs. It also illustrates how these global ubiquitous platforms pose a dilemma for language practitioners who work within institutional teaching settings. Teachers recognize the language learning potential of these tools, but are also worried by the ethical threat they can pose, which can normally be avoided, or at least moderated, within institutional proprietary and “less exciting” platforms.
