Virtual Activities to Promote Multiculturalism and Sustainability of International Partnerships

This paper is a report on the findings of a study to measure the effects of virtual activities for promoting diversity/multiculturalism and sustaining international partnerships in science teacher education between the America and Korea. Partnership program website and international workshop are the virtual activities in this study to ensure continued collaboration between two countries. Journal and survey with the science teacher candidates, assessment methods the teacher candidates developed for their students, and the number of international partnership programs between two countries are the data resources in this study. Findings indicate that 1) the American and Korean teacher candidates learn diverse knowledge for teaching science after the virtual international activities; 2) they show more consideration on multicultural/diversity aspects as future global science teachers; and 3) these activities continuously improve international relationships between two countries.

The aim of this study is to determine science teacher candidates’ (PSTs) levels of associating their chemistry knowledge with daily life and to examine the relationship between these levels and their attitudes towards teaching science. The study is a descriptive study conducted through the survey method. This study was carried out with 30 PSTs in the part of science teacher education at the College of Education in their final semester. As the data collection tools, an open-ended questionnaire, which was developed by Kıyıcı and Aydoğdu (2011), was applied to determine the PSTs’ levels of associating their chemical knowledge with daily life. Also, the “Science Teaching Attitude Scale” developed by Thompson and Shringley (1986) and adapted into Turkish by Özkan, Tekkaya and Çakıroğlu (2002) was used to determine PSTs’ attitudes towards teaching science. The data obtained from the open-ended questionnaire analyzed based on the three categories that were used by Vazquez-Alanso and Manassero-Mas (1999). Findings obtained from the data showed that PSTs’ level of associating their chemistry knowledge with daily life was low. Results of the statistical analyses showed that there was a significant relations between level of associating their chemistry knowledge with daily and their attitudes towards teaching science.

The goal of this work is to describe pre- and in-service science teacher education and science education research in Indonesia in an effort to better inform the global science education community about historical developments and present challenges. We begin by providing an historical overview of the general education system to provide readers with context needed to understand current reform initiatives. Next we describe the current-day process for preparing and certifying science teachers and we describe some of the challenges facing teachers, students, and researchers in Indonesia’s science education context today. We follow this discussion with an introduction to some existing professional organizations for teachers and researchers in Indonesia that are working to develop important channels for disseminating current research on teacher practice, curriculum innovation, and student learning that have the potential to positively influence on teaching and learning in the future. We conclude by highlighting some areas that would benefit from additional research and by inviting more international collaborative research initiatives with colleagues in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Purpose: The Nature of Science (NOS) is an important component of scientific literacy. Science teachers’ Views of the Nature of Science (VNOS) directly affect their teaching behaviors. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore science teachers’ VNOS and find ways of improvement. This study was designed to comparatively investigate preservice science teachers’ VNOS between China and Canada. Design/Approach/Methods: The study employed a survey design to explore how Chinese and Canadian preservice science teachers understood the seven different aspects of NOS. Findings: Data showed that preservice science teachers in China and Canada both hold a modern view about science education. The level of Chinese and Canadian participants’ understanding of NOS was above the relatively naive level. Chinese teachers had better macro-understanding toward science education but their micro-mastery was insufficient. While the Canadian participants had a better understanding of the NOS than their Chinese counterparts. Originality/Value: Based on the research results and the experience of science education and teacher education in Canada, we suggested that there is a need to reconstruct the preservice science teacher education curriculum in China and promote the transformation in the science teacher educational system.

Background/Context The disparity between the race and ethnicity of teachers and students is expected to increase as our nation and classrooms continue to become more racially, ethnically, linguistically, and economically diverse. It is extremely important to think about not only the educational needs of such a diverse student population within schools but also who will teach these students. However, when looking at subject-matter specificity for the retention of Teachers of Color, such as science teachers, the picture becomes extremely serious when we understand teachers’ paths into and out of science and teaching. Purpose The purpose of the study is to analyze the experiences of preservice Teachers of Color (PTOC) enrolled in an elementary science methods course as they gain access to science as White property. Our analysis provides evidence that PTOC can break the perpetual cycle of alienation, exclusion, and inequity in science when they are given opportunities to engage in science as learners and teachers. In addition, we also offer insights regarding the role science teacher educators may play in preparing teachers and especially TOC for urban schools. Setting/Research Design The context of this study was a graduate-level preservice elementary science methods course at a large urban university in New York City. Multiple data sources included pre-post surveys, semester observation journals, final course papers, and a post-course questionnaire. Utilizing constructivist grounded during the initial phase of analysis and themes from critical race theory (CRT), our unique voices of color and positionalities allowed us to interpret the data from a CRT perspective and arrive at findings relevant to making science inclusive to PTOC. Conclusions/Recommendations In order to push the field of science teacher education toward social justice issues of access, opportunity, and enjoyment, efforts must focus on increasing representation of Teachers of Color in science education. The transformation of science teacher education to grant equitable learning experiences for Teachers of Color is needed. Further research on the experiences of science Teachers of Color, as well as Faculty of Color and their relationship with students, is highly encouraged. Both teacher preparation and science education must be open to interrogate and reveal structural forms of race, racism, and power that manifest through curriculum, structure, and pedagogy that cause alienation and exclusion for Teachers of Color. Therefore, we encourage science teacher educators to examine their own course curriculum, structure, and pedagogy through self-study and refection. Overall practices in teacher preparation must empower rather than impede progress toward important goals of CRT, and this may be achieved through building stronger relationships with PTOC and Faculty of Color across teacher preparation courses in support of these goals.

In this research, it is aimed to examine the environmental knowledge and environmental education self-efficacy levels of Science teachers and prospective science teachers in terms of various variables. In this context, screening model was used. The universe of the study consisted of the science teachers who work in Iğdır province in the 2016-2017 academic year and the 3rd and 4th class studying in the Science Teaching Department of the Faculty of Education at Bayburt University. The sample of the study consisted of 110 science teachers and 110 science teacher candidates determined by easily accesible sampling from the universe. The data collected in the study were analyzed in SPSS 25 package program and it was determined that the data collection tools of the research did not show normal distribution. Therefore, non-parametric tests KruskalWallis H and Mann Whitney U tests were used in the study. As a result of the analysis conducted in the research; it was found that science teachers had moderate self-efficacy level, science teachers had high level, environmental knowledge score averages were higher than science teachers, and science teacher candidates were on average level. ​Extended English summary is in the end of Full Text PDF (TURKISH) file.   Özet Araştırmada, fen bilgisi öğretmenlerinin ve fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının çevre bilgileri ve çevre eğitimi öz-yeterlik düzeylerinin çeşitli değişkenler açısından incelemek amaçlanmaktadır. Bu amaç kapsamında araştırmada tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini 2016-2017 eğitim-öğretim yılında Iğdır ilinde görev yapan fen bilgisi öğretmenleri ve Bayburt Üniversitesi Bayburt Eğitim Fakültesi Fen Bilgisi Öğretmenliği Bölümündeki öğrenim gören 3. ve 4. sınıf öğrencileri oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın örneklemini ise evrenden “Kolay Ulaşılabilir Örnekleme” yoluyla belirlenmiş 110 fen bilgisi öğretmeni ve 110 fen bilgisi öğretmen adayı oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada toplanan veriler SPSS 25. paket programına işlenmiş olup yapılan analizler neticesinde araştırmanın veri toplama araçlarının normal dağılım göstermediği belirlenmiştir. Bu yüzden araştırmada non-parametrik testler olan Kruskal Wallis H ve Mann Whitney U testleri kullanılmıştır. Yapılan analizler neticesinde araştırmada; fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının öz-yeterlik düzeyinin orta, fen bilgisi öğretmenlerinin ise yüksek düzeyde olduğu, çevre bilgi puan ortalamalarının fen bilgisi öğretmenlerinin orta seviyenin üzerinde, fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının ise orta seviyede olduğu saptanmıştır.

The trending topic in today's education is computational thinking skills which are used to help to solve complicated problems easier. This study aims to identify the level of knowledge and self-confidence of science teacher candidates (physics and biology) on computational thinking skills. The survey research design was used through a mixed-method approach by combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. The quantitative study involved 1016 randomly selected groups of science teachers whilein the qualitative study, eight science teachers were chosen based on the scores obtained from the quantitative study. The questionnaire was used as a quantitative data collecting technique to analyze descriptive statistics. Then, an interview was used as the qualitative data collecting technique and was analyzed through theme creation. The findings show that science teacher candidates have a high level of knowledge and self-confidence. The implication of this study is very important for teacher candidates because computational thinking can help to facilitate problems solving in everyday life. Teacher candidates need to be given knowledge and understanding of computational thinking skills, to have readiness and self-confidence in facing the challenges of the learning in the 21st-century

The rapid changes in science and technology have changed the traditional education concept by improving the accessibility of information. Current educational understandings require the application of flexible programs that respond to differences in the interests and abilities of the students and that can go into diversity within themselves. One of these approaches is the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) approach. This study  aims to explore the effect of  STEM based laboratory activities on preservice teachers STEM awareness. The study was conducted in science laboratory practices-I course, which is included in the undergraduate science teacher education program. Quasi-experimental research  method was used to investigate the study. Participants were consist of 50 third grade preservice science teachers from Yüzüncü Yıl University Science Teacher Education Department who take the Laboratory Instruction of Science Instruction-I course. FeTeMM awareness scale developed by Buyruk and Korkmaz (2014) was used as data collection tool. Bu amaçla nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden öntest-sontest eşitlenmemiş kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemi Van Yüzüncü Yıl Üniversitesi Fen Bilgisi Öğretmenliği Anabilim Dalı Fen Öğretimi Laboratuvar Uygulamaları-I dersini alan üçüncü sınıf 50 katılımcıdan oluşturmaktadır. Veri toplama aracı olarak Buyruk ve Korkmaz (2014) tarafından geliştirilen STEM farkındalık ölçeği kullanılmıştır. STEM temelli fen laboratuvarı uygulamaları sonrasında deney grubu öğrencilerinin STEM’ e yönelik farkındalık durumları ön test ve son test puanları arasındaki farkın anlamlılığına ilişkin bağımlı örneklem t testi sonuçlarına göre STEM temelli fen laboratuvarı uygulamalarının öğretmen adaylarının STEM farkındalıklarını artırmada anlamlı bir fark oluşturduğu görülmüştür.

Many researchers have reported that there is a significant gap between theory and practice in education. This research sought to contribute to this work by examining the theory/practice gap in secondary school science teaching in South Korea. To do this, a questionnaire was developed to investigate the gap between Korean science teachers’ knowledge about Educational Theories and Teaching Strategies (ETTS) and the usage of it in their science classroom. The questionnaire was administered to 87 science teachers and results showed that even though participants were knowledgeable about many ETTS, only 26% of the teachers reported using it in their teaching. Major reasons reported for this gap in theory and practice were restrictive educational environments that did not support the use of ETTS, irrelevancy and difficulties of ETTS, and students' low interest in learning science. However, teachers’ perception of the importance of ETTS positively affected their usage of ETTS. Implications of the results are discussed, and alternative in-service training program is suggested to activate science teachers’ ETTS what they already know and to guide them to use ETTS in their actual science teaching.
