Integrated Survey of “Quadrature” Aimed at the Graphical Analysis of Painted Perspective

The issue of knowledge and documentation of cultural heritage is always central in the field of Drawing, which, through the survey, is always preliminary to the safeguarding and valorisation of artistic and architectural heritage. The paper aims at presenting some results of a survey realized following an approach that mix direct, laser and photographic techniques to obtain high quality ortophotos of the painted surfaces, useful to be the basis for the graphical analysis of the trompe l'oeil perspective. The phases are: survey campaign and data acquisition, postproduction of the RAW file, photo straightening, photo modelling, orthophoto output, CAD analysis, conclusive considerations. All these steps are referred to the experimentation on a concrete case study, one of the numerous frescoed rooms belonging to the rich iconography of Palazzo Arese Borromeo in Cesano Maderno (MB, Italy), a building that is an actual unicum in its kind.

The issue addressed in this chapter is the design, implementation, and evaluation of a watermarking application, especially focused on the protection of cultural heritage. The application described here is focusing on protecting digital surrogates of high-quality photographs of artifacts, monuments and sites, and on countering copyright infringement of online digital images. This is achieved by the integration of an innovative watermarking method to a specialized and usable user–interface. The system is specifically applied to “Ulysses,” the Official Cultural Portal of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture (HMC). The chapter is structured in 7 main sections where an overview of the issue is presented, the watermarking method is analyzed, and the user-interface is described in detail. Finally, an evaluation of the overall watermarking application is presented and specific on-site implementation issues are analyzed.

<p><span>This paper traces the evolution of the South Gate (Sungnye-mun) as a must-see destination representing the antiquity, beauty and patrimony of Seoul, the former capital of the 600 year-old Chosŏn dynasty of Korea (1392-1910). Using the case study of the Republic of Korea's premier national treasure, this paper traces the preservation methods, educational, and commercial agendas of the producers, managers, and promoters of heritage remains. The earliest photographic records date back to the late nineteenth century when travel photo- graphs taken by stereo-view companies, photo-studios, and diplomats were recycled in newspapers, postcards, and guidebooks, giving foreigners the first glimpses into the “Hermit Kingdom.” The analysis relies on CRM archives such as photographs, guidebooks, architectural surveys, excavation reports, and material resources compiled by the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) during the five years of excavations and construction of a replica to replace the original destroyed in an arson fire in 2008. The paper concludes with the grand re-opening ceremony to celebrate not only the resurrection of South Gate but to showcase the successes of the government's centralized heritage management policies, and conservation methods dedicated to preserving the city's architectural heritage.</span></p>

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> This work describes the different attempts and the consequent results derived from the integration of an HBIM model into an already structured spatial database (DB) and its 3D visualisation in a GIS project.</p><p>This study is connected to the European ResCult (Increasing Resilience of Cultural Heritage) project where a DB for multiscale analyses was defined. To test the methodology proposed, the case study of Santa Maria dei Miracoli church in Venice was chosen since it represents a complex architectural heritage piece in a risk zone, it has been subject to a vast restoration intervention in the recent past but a digital documentation and model concerning it was missing.</p><p>The 3D model of the church was structured in Revit as a HBIM, with the association of different kind of information and data related to the architectural elements by means of ‘shared parameters’ and ‘system families’. This procedure allows to reach an even higher Level of Detail (LOD4), but lead to some issues related to the semantic and software interoperability. To solve these problems the existing DB for the resilience of cultural heritage was extended adding a new entity representing the architectural elements designed in the BIM project.</p><p>The aim of the test is to understand how the data and attributes inserted in the HBIM are converted and handled when dealing with a GIS DB, stepping from the IFC to the CityGML standard, through the FME software.</p>

In this contribution the possibility to combine terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) measurements and UAS photogrammetry for the detailed description and high quality surveying of a cultural monument will be illustrated by the example of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in the city of Greifswald. Due to the different nature of UAS photogrammetry and TLS walls and windows as well as portions of roofs are captured with a different level of completeness and accuracy. The average deviations of the test areas on the overlap between the two measurement methods ranges from 0.015 m to 0.033 m with standard deviations of 0.025 m to 0.088 m.

This article elicits restoration experience regarding heritage-listed buildings in the cities of Nish (Serbia) and Saint-Petersburg (Russia). Protection of architectural heritage having cultural and historical value is increasingly gaining in importance in modern society so it is necessary to establish the principles of intervention, when and to what extent it is necessary or desirable. The principles applied in this field make continuous progress and there are new, innovative techniques that are the subject of this case study. Revitalization of Villa Zivkovic (Serbia, the city of Nish) offers an analysis of technically advanced and innovative approach to active protection in the context of sustainable development while preserving the potential cultural value of this important building, representing the movement of early Modern. The article also deals with existing standards for conservation of cultural heritage objects in Saint-Petersburg, (Russia). The structure of protection areas for cultural heritage of historically developed central districts of Saint-Petersburg is presented herein. The article presents assigned for imposing constraints on restoration activities with respect to historical buildings.

Cultural heritage represents a unique and irreplaceable cultural value of a nation. Preservation and protection of cultural heritage is an important moral role of the entire modern society. The paper singles out the notion of vernacular architecture and traditional houses as a significant part of the architectural heritage. The case study includes examples of traditional houses in Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria. The current condition of buildings, their purpose, the degree of preservation, as well as the applied methods of protection are considered in more detail. By analyzing examples of positive and negative practice, conclusions were drawn about the active approach to the architectural heritage of these countries. The goal of this paper is to consider the approach to the preservation of vernacular architecture and the relationship of these countries to this form of cultural heritage. The methods used in the paper are analysis, synthesis, comparative analysis, modeling method and case study.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Researching historical archives for material suitable for photogrammetry is essential for the documentation and 3D reconstruction of Cultural Heritage, especially when this heritage has been lost or transformed over time. This research presents an innovative workflow which combines the photogrammetric procedure with Machine Learning for the processing of historical film footage. A Neural Network is trained to automatically detect frames in which architectural heritage appears. These frames are subsequently processed using photogrammetry and finally the resulting model is assessed for metric quality. This paper proposes best practises in training and validation on a Cultural Heritage asset. The algorithm was tested through a case study of the Tour Saint Jacques in Paris for which an entirely new dataset was created. The findings are encouraging both in terms of saving human effort and of improvement of the photogrammetric survey pipeline. This new tool can help researchers to better manage and organize historical information.</p>

One of the most challenging problems of the ancient architectural heritage is its protection from fire risk. The “Italian Risk assessment map of the cultural heritage” (Carta del Rischio [1]), is a GIS-based platform developed by the Italian Central Institute for Restoration (ISCR) to assess the exposure and the vulnerability to static-structural, environmental, anthropogenic and seismic risk of the historical and cultural heritage. The paper marks a new phase of development of the Risk Map Information System aiming at integrating the vulnerability estimation of the historical buildings with a new method derived from the Fire Risk Index Method for Multi-storey Apartment Buildings (FRIM-MAB). The new index-based method has been tested in a full scale case-study in comparison with both the Italian prescriptive assessment and the performance-based fire protection approach. Results show the capability of the approach, its reliability and user friendliness.
