Integration of modern technology in enhancing learner-centered approach to instruction is increasingly being encouraged in higher education. Cloud computing has enhanced the way data is shared and stored. Learning resources can be stored in cloud computers thus, enabling groups of students to collaborate and edit shared materials. In addition, it also provides a number of advantages such as reduce storage cost, enhanced security, accessibility of learning materials and easy communication. Tutorial classes can take advantage of cloud computing to have the tutorial learning resources stored in the cloud. This will allow learners to collaborate online and edit tutorial materials regardless of the physical location of the participants. This book chapter discusses how cloud computing technologies can be utilized in education sector and proposes a cloud computing model which can be incorporated in a tutorial class to improve learner-centered teaching pedagogies in a tutorial class.

This shift involves the movement of applications, documents and other stored content from desktop-based to web-based through the utility known as the ‘cloud'. The cloud links thousands of computers and servers together where users are not limited to one device but are able to access their documents and other contents through any computer device, provided it has the ability to connect to the Internet. This allows for better storage capacity, lower costs, scalability and on-demand access. Higher education institutions are opting to reap the same benefits of cloud computing. Students, academics, administrators, and other users will be able to access computing resources through university applications, e-mail, databases and other cloud hosting services. This book chapter provides a general understanding of cloud computing systems and what benefits and challenges of cloud computing in higher education. It is followed by the trends of cloud computing usage and considerations needed for adopting cloud computing. The chapter will end with recommendations needed for adopting cloud computing.

Although modern bridge are carefully designed and well constructed, damage may occur in them due to unexpected causes. Currently, many different techniques have been proposed and investigated in bridge condition assessment. However, evaluation efficiency of condition assessment has not been paid much attention by the researchers. A fast evaluation of the urban railway bridge condition based on the cloud computing is presented. In this paper dynamic FE model and Artificial neural networks technique is applied to model updating. The cloud computing model provides the basis for fast analyses. It was found that when applied to the actually railway bridges, the proposed method provided results similar to those obtained by experts, but can improve efficiency of bridge

Cloud computing is a novel network-based computing model, in which the cloud infrastructure is constructed in bottom level and provided as the support environment for the applications in upper cloud level. The combination of clouding computing and GIS can improve the performance of GIS, and it can also provide a new prospect of GIS information storage, processing and utilization. By integrating cloud computing and GIS, this paper presented a cloud computing based GIS model based on two features of cloud computing: data storage and transparent custom service. The model contains two layers: service layer and application layer. With this two-layer model, GIS can provide stable and efficient services to end users by optimized network resource allocation of underlying data and services in cloud computing.
