What happened between Mrs. Kardashian West and the FDA in 2015 is very interesting to all of us. She praised and suggested a prescribed drug against morning sickness. The FDA claimed it was a commercial and sent a warning letter to the company, which produced the drug. Kim Kardashian West changed her post and admitted it was a commercial. Was it true? Mrs. Kardashian West just expressed her personal opinion and wanted to share with her followers a piece of advice. She share her personal story, like many other Internet users, and her patient experience should have been respected. Her story shows what patient empowerment is and how the Net is a precious resource for patients to share their stories that might help other patients. For this reason, doctors should not be afraid of the Net and its potentiality.

Abstract Background The FDA Patient-Focused Drug Development Initiative was launched to ensure the incorporation of the patient voice into drug development and evaluation. Since 2017, the FDA must publish a statement outlining patient experience data (PED) considered in the approval of new drugs. This study investigated the presence and role of PED in drug approval and translation into product label claims. Methods PED reported in approval packages of the 48 drugs approved by FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research in 2019 was identified and categorized. PED in the form of clinical outcome assessments (COAs) was characterized by endpoint positioning and outcome. The product labels were analyzed for PED-related claims. Results PED was reported as relevant for 39 of 48 (81.3%) drugs approved in 2019. COAs were the predominant PED type; other PED was identified for only 9 (18.8%) drugs, and none included qualitative or patient preference studies. COAs were the only type of PED for which associated claims were identified in the product labels. 27 out of 48 (56.3%) labels contained one or more efficacy claims based on COAs; of these, patient-reported outcomes were the most prevalent with claims identified in 19 labels (39.6%). Conclusion There are ample opportunities for incorporating PED beyond COAs to inform drug development and facilitate availability of medicines tailored to patient needs. A higher level of transparency on the role of PED in regulatory decision-making and a clear path to PED-based label claims could incentivize sponsors and enable patient empowerment in treatment decisions.

Abstract Background – Patient experience is recognized as one of the key elements of quality control within healthcare organizations, becoming crucial for a competitive growth strategy. In fact, delivering patient-centered healthcare experiences is seen as one of the basic requirements of good quality care. Women have been largely invisible in patient centered satisfaction research, especially if considering women needs during pregnancy and labor. The aim of this paper is to understand the experiential value drivers of expectant mothers through a holistic experiential marketing perspective. This paper enlightens the elements of in-hospital stays from different perspectives, contributing to a better and more exhaustive understanding of the patient’s needs and preferences. Methods – Three studies were designed and conducted referring to a maternal and child health hospital: two focus groups involving expectant and new mothers (study 1), a qualitative analysis to understand the online overall sentiment regarding hospital experiences during pregnancy (study 2) and a survey with collected data analyzed through SEM to identify the most influential and significant factors affecting women’s overall satisfaction in the in-hospital stay (study 3).Results – The qualitative research returned some valuable insights on the role of interaction with staff, information quality and brand. Sentiment analysis revealed the relevance of online patient experience. Finally, the quantitative SEM analysis confirmed that the relationship between patients and staff and patient empowerment impact the most on the overall satisfaction. Furthermore, the brand value plays a mediating role in this positive relationship. Conclusions – Results suggest to prioritize the establishment of strong human relationships between clinical staff and patients, based on the availability of high quality clinical information. The conducted studies through their main finding, could support an improvement in the process of care based on expectant mothers’ needs and behaviours.

Abstract Educating students and informing clinicians regarding developments in therapy approaches and in evidence-based practice are important elements of the responsibility of specialist academic posts in universities. In this article, the development of narrative therapy and its theoretical background are outlined (preceded by a general outline of how the topic of fluency disorders is introduced to students at an Irish university). An example of implementing narrative therapy with a 12-year-old boy is presented. The brief case description demonstrates how narrative therapy facilitated this 12-year-old make sense of his dysfluency and his phonological disorder, leading to his improved understanding and management of the problems, fostering a sense of control that led ultimately to their resolution.

Background: Previous studies have shown that suicide-related Internet use can have both negative and positive psychological effects. Aims: This study examined the effect of suicide-related Internet use on users’ suicidal ideation, depression/anxiety tendency, and loneliness. Method: A two-wave panel study of 850 Internet users was conducted via the Internet. Results: Suicide-related Internet use (e.g., browsing websites about suicide methods) had negative effects on suicidal ideation and depression/anxiety tendency. No forms of suicide-related Internet use, even those that would generally be considered positive, were found to decrease users’ suicidal ideation. In addition, our results suggest that the greater the suicidal ideation and feelings of depression and loneliness of Internet users, the more they used the Internet. Conclusion: Since suicide-related Internet use can adversely influence the mental health of young adults, it is necessary to take measures to reduce their exposure to such information.

Abstract. Background: Nurturing gatekeepers is an effective suicide prevention strategy. Internet-based methods to screen those at high risk of suicide have been developed in recent years but have not been used for online gatekeeping. Aims: A preliminary study was conducted to examine the feasibility and effects of online gatekeeping. Method: Advertisements to promote e-mail psychological consultation service use among Internet users were placed on web pages identified by searches using suicide-related keywords. We replied to all emails received between July and December 2013 and analyzed their contents. Results: A total of 139 consultation service users were analyzed. The mean age was 23.8 years (SD = 9.7), and female users accounted for 80% of the sample. Suicidal ideation was present in 74.1%, and 12.2% had a history of suicide attempts. After consultation, positive changes in mood were observed in 10.8%, 16.5% showed intentions to seek help from new supporters, and 10.1% of all 139 users actually took help-seeking actions. Conclusion: Online gatekeeping to prevent suicide by placing advertisements on web search pages to promote consultation service use among Internet users with suicidal ideation may be feasible.
