In recent years, hybrid organizations have been spreading in the competitive landscape, combining characteristics from both private and social sectors. To be successful, they need to do a great job managing limited resources. To this end, an effective operations strategy must be at the core of their priorities. Most of these organizations often rely on volunteer work to conduct their activities; therefore, mobilizing and engaging volunteers on a continuous basis is a key issue for many hybrid organizations. The present chapter aims to identify relevant workforce management practices in hybrid organizations. Building on the literature, the chapter offers a presentation of the main concepts underlying the setup of an operations strategy, highlighting the main particularities and challenges faced by hybrid organizations, and focusing on workforce management decisions. The chapter then identifies and discusses three workforce management practices employed by two hybrid organizations, whose operations are based on volunteer work.

Purpose This paper aims to describe an exploratory study aiming to identify the mechanisms adopted by social enterprises for effective operations based on volunteer work. Design/methodology/approach An inductive multiple case study method was used addressing three social enterprises whose operations rely on a volunteer workforce. Findings Volunteer-based operations benefit from the establishment of a formal structure, involving different levels of volunteering complemented with other mechanisms, namely, educate and train, empower and connect. Special attention must be given to first-level volunteers, reinforcing the range of practices to motivate and engage them, as they serve as intermediaries between the paid employees and lower-level volunteers. Practical implications The study provides valuable insights for managers for the implementation of effective operations, building on volunteer work, aiming at the generation of social and economic value. Social implications Due to their innovative character, social enterprises are well-positioned to mobilize more and more qualified volunteers for a significant change in their communities. Adopting a more strategic and structured approach to volunteer management can enable these organizations to take advantage of it. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature on social enterprise by identifying a set of mechanisms adopted for effective volunteer-based operations. It also contributes to the literature on volunteer management by addressing an underexplored context.

Risk management practices as described in many leading texts feel counterintuitive to many practitioners and are frequently ignored, despite their being evidently logical and potentially valuable. Such practices are often conceived as a remedial post-planning, audit activity. This paper proposes an approach for dealing with project uncertainty and risk, grounded in economics and taking into account behavioural biases and heuristics. The proposed approach is argued to be an enhancement to conventional risk management practices and one that can serve organisations better while also aligning to experienced practitioners’ intuitive approaches. In particular, we argue: that the focus should be on adding economic value rather than reducing risk per se; that opportunity gain/loss is a superior metric for gauging potential impacts of risky events; and that creation of real options should be emphasised as part of the repertoire of generic response actions to risk. The approach also supports the integration and handling of uncertainty and risk as part of holistic project planning and control.

Australia is the custodian of a diverse range of continental and oceanic islands. From Heard and Macquarie in the sub-Antarctic, to temperate Lord Howe and Norfolk, to the tropical Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia’s islands contain some of the nation’s most iconic fauna, flora and ecosystems. They are a refuge for over 35% of Australia’s threatened species and for many others declining on mainland Australia. They also have significant cultural value, especially for Indigenous communities, and economic value as centres for tourism. Australian Island Arks presents a compelling case for restoring and managing islands to conserve our natural heritage. With contributions from island practitioners, researchers and policy-makers, it reviews current island management practices and discusses the need and options for future conservation work. Chapters focus on the management of invasive species, threatened species recovery, conservation planning, Indigenous cultural values and partnerships, tourism enterprises, visitor management, and policy and legislature. The relationship between golf courses, forced ecosystems and the environment is extremely complex and need to be established carefully because of the social pressures and implications of this type of facilities. The main environmental aspects of golf courses, the way the golf structures exert an influence on the environment, the management practices and the use of pesticides are the main features to be considered. The soil-plant-atmosphere continuum is at the core of the golf and must be managed in an integrated way to reduce environmental impacts of the whole facility. Many golf courses are located in natural areas, where wildlife exists and there is an influence on the course and vice versa. There is also the need to define the relationships between a course and its surrounding environments.

This article describes a strategy for using the minimum wage as a classroom debate topic. Classroom debate is an active-learning strategy that encourages students to develop skills that are often lacking in the college curriculum. Specifically, classroom debate promotes critical thinking and encourages students to see topics from various perspectives. Economics topics are well suited for classroom debate because most of the policy arguments have at least two well-reasoned positions. The minimum wage is an economics topic that students tend to care deeply about because it speaks to issues of poverty, income inequality, discrimination, and the economic value of education, and many students in the college demographic earn minimum, or near-minimum, wage. Instructors who use the minimum wage debate in their classrooms will find that students will apply an “economic way of thinking” to issues at the core of the curriculum. Act3p/Arp4, an essential actin-related protein ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae located within the nucleus, is, according to genetic data, involved in transcriptional regulation. In addition to the basal core structure of the actin family members, which is responsible for ATPase activity, Act3p possesses two insertions, insertions I and II, the latter of which is predicted to form a loop-like structure protruding from beyond the surface of the molecule. Because Act3p is a constituent of chromatin but itself does not bind to DNA, we hypothesized that insertion II might be responsible for an Act3p-specific function through its interaction with some other chromatin protein. Far Western blot and two-hybrid analyses revealed the ability of insertion II to bind to each of the core histones, although with somewhat different affinities. Together with our finding of coimmunoprecipitation of Act3p with histone H2A, this suggests the in vivo existence of a protein complex required for correct expression of particular genes. We also show that a conditionalact3 mutation affects chromatin structure of an episomal DNA molecule, indicating that the putative Act3p complex may be involved in the establishment, remodeling, or maintenance of chromatin structures.

This study examines the legal standing of waqf for non-Muslims contributing to the increase of waqf assets in Indonesia. It turns out that raising waqf funds can be accessed from non-Muslim funds that sympathize with the economic value of Islamic philanthropy. Waqf is a deed that is part goodness of Islam and has a socioeconomic dimension. The essence of waqf is to hold the core of waqf and develop the outcome, so that waqf assets do not just disappear. The form of waqf is exciting and has great benefits so that not only a Muslim who is interested in waqf, many non-Muslims also contribute through donations. However, scholars differ in opinions about non-Muslim waqf laws; besides that, the waqf law also does not mention the specificity of waqf only for Muslims. This research is qualitative research through a normative juridical approach through literature in analyzing the data obtained. So, the difference in opinion of the madzhab scholars is essentially allowing non-Muslim endowments if it is not intended for religious facilities such as mosques.

Recent advances in deep learning have facilitated the demand of neural models for real applications. In practice, these applications often need to be deployed with limited resources while keeping high accuracy. This paper touches the core of neural models in NLP, word embeddings, and presents an embedding distillation framework that remarkably reduces the dimension of word embeddings without compromising accuracy. A new distillation ensemble approach is also proposed that trains a high-efficient student model using multiple teacher models. In our approach, the teacher models play roles only during training such that the student model operates on its own without getting supports from the teacher models during decoding, which makes it run as fast and light as any single model. All models are evaluated on seven document classification datasets and show significant advantage over the teacher models for most cases. Our analysis depicts insightful transformation of word embeddings from distillation and suggests a future direction to ensemble approaches using neural models.

A major challenge for business people in the field of globalisation is how to understand human resource management practices. It’s an obvious view that people are the assets of business entity irrespective of business. Managing people is not an easy task, since psychological factors speaks louder. Generally, the labour cum machine intensive industry should promptly set the people resourcing policies and practices. The thermal power generation units also need to frame the people resourcing practices in genuine. Accessing the opinion of employees about the people resourcing practices, in the select thermal power generation units of Tuticorin and satisfaction level of employees about the people resourcing practices are the core objectives. Analysis is done using Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal Wallis test. The researcher culminated that it is imperative for the thermal power generating units to realize the significance and intensity of people resourcing practices and ameliorate in all paths of work life.
