Micro-engineering is nowadays a key industrial area with applications is a wide range of products and sectors. The need for a multiplicity of products fostered the development of several processes and combinations of processes in the world of micro-engineering. There are different feasible alternatives to produce the same kind of product. The manufacturing cost is usually the decision factor to select the best alternative among them. But cost is affected by dozens of factors and if not properly modelled causes controversy in so complex decisions. In this chapter, the application of process-based cost modelling is proposed as the engine to identify the best performance spaces for each alternative, using its potential for sensitive analysis of uncertain and/or critical parameters. To illustrate the approach, a case study is developed analyzing four alternatives for the production of a light diffuser with micro-features imbibed, involving micro-injection molding, hot-embossing, micromachining, and powder-injection molding.

Abstract Micro applications, especially in biomedical and optical sectors, require the fabrication of thin polymeric parts which can be commonly realized by micro injection molding process. However, this process is characterized by a relevant constraint regarding the tooling. Indeed, the design and manufacturing of molds could be a very time-consuming step and so, a significant limitation for the rapid development of new products. Moreover, if the design displays challenging micro-features, their realization could involve the use of more than one mold for the fabrication of a single thin part. Therefore, a proper integration of different manufacturing micro technologies may represent an advantageous method to realise such polymeric thin micro features. In this work, a micro-manufacturing process chain including stereolithography, micro milling and micro injection molding is reported. The mold for the micro injection molding process was fabricated by means of stereolithography and micro milling, which allowed to produce low-cost reconfigurable modular mold, composed by an insert support and a removable insert. The assessment of the proposed process chain was carried out by evaluating the dimensions and the surface finishing and texturing of the milled mold cavities and molded components. Finally, a brief economic analysis compares three process chains for fabricating the micro mold showing that proposed one reduces manufacturing cost of almost 61% with the same production time.

Micro powder injection molding (µPIM) is the combination of micro injection molding and powder injection molding (PIM) technology. The increasing demands on market of microparts further intensify the development of this technology. µPIM process enables the use of a wide range of materials and broadens the applications of micro components. This process is well suitable for large volume production of micro-components at low costs. Requirement of powder and binder is more stringent since product fabricate in micron scale, therefore criterion of the powder and binder has been reviewed in this paper. In addition, the process parameter and development in the computer aid plays an important due to the narrow process window requires even tighter as the quality of the micro-component is sensitive to the parameter. This paper outlines recent development in µPIM. Challenges and further explore for µPIM is concluded in the last part of this paper.

Aluminum nitride (AlN) exhibits many functional properties that are relevant to applications in electronics, aerospace, defense and automotive industries. However, the successful translation of these properties into final applications lies in the net-shaping of ceramics into fully dense microstructures. Increasing the packing density of the starting powders is one effective route to achieve high sintered density and dimensional precision. The present paper presents an in-depth study on the effects of nanoparticle addition on the powder injection molding process (PIM) of AlN powder-polymer mixtures. In particular, bimodal mixtures of nanoscale and sub-micrometer particles were found to have significantly increased powder packing characteristics (solids loading) in the powder-polymer mixtures. The influence of nanoparticle addition on the multi-step PIM process was examined. The above results provide new perspectives which could impact a wide range of materials, powder processing techniques and applications.

The Soil Science Institute of Thessaloniki produces new digitized Soil Maps that provide a useful electronic database for the spatial representation of the soil variation within a region, based on in situ soil sampling, laboratory analyses, GIS techniques and plant nutrition mathematical models, coupled with the local land cadastre. The novelty of these studies is that local agronomists have immediate access to a wide range of soil information by clicking on a field parcel shown in this digital interface and, therefore, can suggest an appropriate treatment (e.g. liming, manure incorporation, desalination, application of proper type and quantity of fertilizer) depending on the field conditions and cultivated crops. A specific case study is presented in the current work with regards to the construction of the digitized Soil Map of the regional unit of Kastoria. The potential of this map can easily be realized by the fact that the mapping of the physicochemical properties of the soils in this region provided delineation zones for differential fertilization management. An experiment was also conducted using remote sensing techniques for the enhancement of the fertilization advisory software database, which is a component of the digitized map, and the optimization of nitrogen management in agricultural areas.

The article discusses one of the modern areas of powder metallurgy – the technology of manufacturing shaped parts by the powder injection molding (PIM). For the powder-polymer mixture (feedstock) with a wax-polypropylene binder of the solvent-thermal type of removal by isobaric volume dilatometry, the dependence of PVT state parameters was studied. For each component of the polymer binder, the dependence of pressure on the temperature of phase transition was obtained. As a result of mathematical processing and analysis of PVT data for the feedstock of the studied type, a technological window of parameters has been determined that allows injection molding of «green parts» with minimal volume shrinkage. The results of a comparative analysis of the compaction of feedstock with a polymer binder catalytic and solution-thermal type of removal are presented.

Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy provides, twice each year, a collection of the best current work in the field of ancient philosophy. Each volume features original essays that contribute to an understanding of a wide range of themes and problems in all periods of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, from the beginnings to the threshold of the Middle Ages. From its first volume in 1983, OSAP has been a highly influential venue for work in the field, and has often featured essays of substantial length as well as critical essays on books of distinctive importance. Volume LV contains: a methodological examination on how the evidence for Presocratic thought is shaped through its reception by later thinkers, using discussions of a world soul as a case study; an article on Plato’s conception of flux and the way in which sensible particulars maintain a kind of continuity while undergoing constant change; a discussion of J. L. Austin’s unpublished lecture notes on Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and his treatment of loss of control (akrasia); an article on the Stoics’ theory of time and in particular Chrysippus’ conception of the present and of events; and two articles on Plotinus, one that identifies a distinct argument to show that there is a single, ultimate metaphysical principle; and a review essay discussing E. K. Emilsson’s recent book, Plotinus.

The traditional way to mitigate loss circulation in drilling operations is to use preventative and curative materials. However, it is difficult to quantify the amount of materials from every possible combination to produce customized rheological properties. In this study, machine learning (ML) is used to develop a framework to identify material composition for loss circulation applications based on the desired rheological characteristics. The relation between the rheological properties and the mud components for polyacrylamide/polyethyleneimine (PAM/PEI)-based mud is assessed experimentally. Four different ML algorithms were implemented to model the rheological data for various mud components at different concentrations and testing conditions. These four algorithms include (a) k-Nearest Neighbor, (b) Random Forest, (c) Gradient Boosting, and (d) AdaBoosting. The Gradient Boosting model showed the highest accuracy (91 and 74% for plastic and apparent viscosity, respectively), which can be further used for hydraulic calculations. Overall, the experimental study presented in this paper, together with the proposed ML-based framework, adds valuable information to the design of PAM/PEI-based mud. The ML models allowed a wide range of rheology assessments for various drilling fluid formulations with a mean accuracy of up to 91%. The case study has shown that with the appropriate combination of materials, reasonable rheological properties could be achieved to prevent loss circulation by managing the equivalent circulating density (ECD).

Introduction: In the paper, we examine the energy consumption efficiency of specialized container diesel trucks engaged in container transportation at a seaport terminal. Objectives: Using the container terminal at Klaipėda in Lithuania as the background for the research, we produced an improved energy consumption model for measuring the theoretical energy consumption and regeneration of diesel trucks at the terminal and provide a comparative analysis. Methods: We created a mathematical model which describes the instantaneous energy consumption of the diesel trucks, taking into account their dynamic properties and the overall geometry of their routes—“Ship-Truck-Stack-Ship”—using the superposition principle. We investigated other critical parameters relevant to the model and provide a statistical evaluation of the transportation process using data from a case study of Klaipėda port, where we collected measurements of container transportation parameters using georeferenced movement detection and logs from wireless equipment positioned on the diesel-powered container trucks. Results: The modeling results showed that an instantaneous evaluation of energy consumption can reveal areas in the container transportation process which have the highest energy loss and require the introduction of new management and process control initiatives to address the regulations which are designed to decrease harmful industrial emissions and encourage novel technologies and thereby increase the eco-friendliness of existing systems. Conclusion: Based on the research results, the article can provide a reference for the estimation of diesel truck efficiency in seaport terminal operations.
