Teaching Methods and Syllabus Design in Business Strategy Courses

The chapter focuses on a problem that business schools all over the world face and which is connected with the necessity to include concepts and instruments of strategic management valuable for the managers into the syllabi of the courses. It is necessary to define the requirements and expectations of the managers for the syllabus development and methods of studying. The purpose of the study is to determine the existing conformity of strategic management course syllabus and the Russian managers' perceptions of sources of competitive advantage. During the empirical study, a survey of the students of the EMBA program has been conducted. The results of the analysis indicate that managers link the sources of competitive advantage with better position of the company in the external environment that leads to greater interest in learning strategic tools which are appropriate for its detecting. The findings raise serious challenges for strategic management teaching and put into question the usefulness of proactive development of competences in strategic management education.

Strategic management have gained popularity in the public institutions to foster good delivery service to the public. The strategic planning enables organizations to establish a strategic match between the internal competency, resources and external environment. Majority of the successful organizations across the world use strategic management and planning as a tool that enables to optimize the operations and achieve maximum productivity with the resources. This paper reviewed on strategic management for organisations in Abu Dhabi especially for Abu Dhabi Police (ADP) force. It presents three strategic management theories which can be adopted by an organisation. This would help the organisation such as police department to reduce the increasing crime rate and mortality rate in UAE.

An organization achieves competitive advantage if it delivers above average profits in its industry. Strategic management has many definitions. In this context, the authors define global strategic management as a bundle of decisions and acts based on resources and capabilities that a manager undertakes that decide the long-term competitive position of the firm. The past and current economic conditions are evidence that global strategy will never be perfect but an ongoing effort to achieve optimal results for all stakeholders. Hence, the task for the global leaders has become increasingly challenging and hypercompetitive. These programs can be highly specialized and individually designed for specific companies in a given industry. Present and future global leaders must stay current with competitive trends and ahead of the competition to achieve and sustain competitive advantage in their industry.

Curriculums of business schools have been questioned in terms of the relevancy and practical application of real life scenarios. Business schools have a responsibility to promote and encourage responsible management education within their curricula and learning experience. Being responsible allows business schools to produce graduates who will become responsible leaders who have a lasting impact on businesses, communities, the environment, the country and the world. There is rising pressure for business schools to promote responsible management education through initiatives such as the Principals of Responsible Management Education (PRME). This chapter seeks to identify the challenges and benefits of PRME and the role that business schools play in implementing it in their curriculums.

Societies across the world currently deal with multiple interconnected problems whose solutions call for the active participation of various actors. The private sector is among them and as a result, business leaders are in need of competencies that enable them to find appropriate answers. Sustainability competence may offer the key to transition towards a more equal and fair economy where the resources are maintained for the use of future generations. Higher Education Institutions and specifically business schools are an essential means to develop such competency. The case is about rethinking the business strategy in the gaming industry in India vis-à-vis the world. It discusses the start-up Virtual Infocom (Virtual Information & Communications) and how over the years it has grown into a formidable local and global player. The case is about revamping market strategy and the attributes therein, the prospects and the potential, and envisages to explore as to how the company should, if so, alter their business strategy to be a top brand reckoning in the industry. Virtual Infocom, primarily a training institute, is considering whether to develop games for the market instead of being a secondary player. It unravels the dilemma as to whether it should continue with training or diversify to earn revenues globally to ensure a sustainable competitive advantage in the gaming industry.
