Abstract The establishment of the Indonesian Battery Corporation is a step forward to make Indonesia a global player in the electric vehicle battery industry. This state-owned consortium is mandated to develop an integrated electric vehicle battery industry ecosystem from upstream to downstream. Indonesia has around six companies developing High-Pressure Acid Leach processing and refining projects. Battery production for Indonesian electric vehicles is estimated to contribute approximately 12.7% to the global market by 2035. A value-added analysis approach model is estimated to increase Gross Domestic Product by $21,434 billion. In addition, the impact on job creation is around 42,603 people. This estimation can be implemented with some supports, such as partners with proven technology and significant capital to build the precursor and cathode industries, battery cell and battery industries, and the electric vehicle industry and policies related to development.

The EU continues its quest to draw the contours of innovative legislation for the digital domain. The European Commission’s draft Regulation on artificial intelligence (AI) is a clear departure from previous ‘soft’ attempts to set the rules through ethical principles and industry pledges. The EU aspires to be the first global player to adopt a comprehensive framework that classifies and regulates the roll-out of AI software and hardware within its internal market. The draft rules try to provide legal certainty for public and private bodies across the EU, while making sure that potential risks to its citizens are minimised. This article sketches out some of the most important provisions of the draft Regulation and tries to critically assess its potential shortcomings related to implementation and enforcement. The final version of the AI proposal should avoid the mistakes of previous attempts to draft transnational rules for the online space and establish a sufficiently flexible legal framework.

This book is written by Southern African social welfare, social work, social development, social security and social policy academics, practitioners and advocates who have varying degrees of experience. The chapters are examined through different theoretical lenses and historical perspectives. The book focuses on the pre-colonial period – a golden thread running through the chapters. Furthermore, the authors provide a deep and critical reflection of social welfare, social work, and related disciplines during the colonial era when Western countries’ capture and oppression of Africa characterised the continent’s history, and the post-colonial era, characterised by a deliberate move by Africa’s political administrations to focus on nation-building and to attempt making Africa a global player.

Kingdom of Nokia tells a fascinating story of corporatism in Finland. How did the mobile phone giant Nokia make the Finnish elite willing to serve the interests of the company? Nokia became a global player in mobile communications in the 1990s, and helped establish Anglo-Saxon capitalism in Finland. Through its success and strong lobbying, the company managed to capture the attention of Finnish politicians, civil servants, and journalists nationwide. With concrete detailed examples, Kingdom of Nokia illustrates how Nokia organised lavishing trips to journalists and paid direct campaign funding to politicians to establish its role at the core of Finnish decision-making. As a result, the company influenced important political decisions such as joining the European Union and adopting the euro, and further, Nokia even drafted its own law to serve its special interests. All this in a country considered one of the least corrupt in the world.

Significance Building on previous strategies, it will focus on the twin priorities of Europe becoming a global player in the green and digital economies. It may also offer clues concerning the potential promotion of national or European champion firms. The strategy will underpin the growing role of the state towards guaranteeing Europe’s long-term competitiveness and sovereignty. Impacts The revised strategy will give greater weight to the development of the life sciences industries. There will be a growing emphasis on 're-shoring' in key sectors to ensure that supply chains are located within the EU. The shift to more interventionist approaches in the EU will potentially increase tensions with trade partners.

Abstract This article analyzes how foreign policymakers legitimize their enactment of role conceptions to play a more active role at the global level toward a potentially reluctant domestic audience. In order to reduce the likelihood of domestic role contestation while at the same time subscribe toward ego and alter expectations, it is necessary for policymakers to legitimize role conceptions and their enactments toward domestic audiences. This article develops the notion of role legitimation to capture this process and puts forward two mechanisms through which role legitimation is performed. The first mechanism is the revival of roles from a specific period in time that is deeply entrenched as an inalienable historical feature of the state. The second one is the reproduction of the international expectations into the domestic political discourse. To illustrate the argument, this article utilizes the case of Indonesia's foreign policy during Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Presidency (2004–2014), particularly its engagement at G20, its objective to make the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) a global player, and its agenda to promote democracy and moderate Islam at the global level.
