From Ubiquitous to Ubiquitous Blended Learning Environments

As advances in information and communication technology increasingly transform learning and teaching; blended learning and ubiquitous learning concepts have gained attention and become pervasive in 21st century. With the help of recent advances in mobile learning, wireless networks, RFID tags, a new model of blended learning—ubiquitous blended learning—that takes advantage of increasing ubiquity of online devices in online phase of blended learning is considered to gain attention in designing online courses. In this chapter, the author presents a picture of ubiquitous and blended learning studies while focusing on the results of ubiquitous learning and suggesting a rationale for such designs. The author defines ubiquitous blended learning as an instructional design approach that integrates ubiquitous technologies involved on-line and/or virtual learning with face-to-face learning by decreasing seat-time in class and increasing outdoor learning activities to facilitate learning from not just the teacher but from peer to peer and on-line learning communities as well.

Adequate learning facilities such as computer laboratories, LCDs and internet networks. Teachers, students, and parents of students have the ability to utilize information technology (IT) facilities, but both facilities and capabilities have not been utilized optimally. It is assumed that if the facilities and capabilities are utilized in learning, it is likely that it can improve the learning process and student learning outcomes. In this case IT utilization is intended to combine face-to-face learning and online known as "blended learning". There are 24 elementary school teachers in Purworejo Elementary School who have never done Blended Learning, even though they have the potential to implement it. The solution is that they need training in Blended Learning development. Training includes blended learning planning, the practice of blended learning implementation, and supporting materials as prerequisites for implementing blended learning. The methods used in the training are lecture, practice, and simulation methods. The result is a blended learning, off-line and on-line learning plan.

The increase in student enrolment and the need  to cater to students of diverse backgrounds have led to the adoption of blended learning in many higher learning institutions. Blended learning, which allows both face to face interaction and on-line delivery, has been adopted into many curricula. One such institution is University Technology MARA which is slowly introducing features of blended learning in its course syllabus beginning with practice to online assessments. However, to ensure successful implementation of blended learning as part of the curricula, there are several aspects for consideration such as learner and teacher readiness for blended learning. This paper examines issues regarding the use of blended learning as a delivery method at UiTM Kedah . The discussion in this paper focuses on learner’ readiness and perceptions of the blended learning environment. The data collected for this study are responses from learners to a questionnaire survey. The research findings form the basis for recommendations for the development of learning and teaching practices using blended learning approaches to enhance learners' learning experiences.

This chapter is intended for tutors, professors, and students, and seeks to contribute to the development of online communication activities as a means of providing curriculum flexibility in engineering courses. It describes the use of online learning resources, called Learning Objects (LO), and their development at the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana (PUCPR) by a multidisciplinary staff. The design of the LOs takes into account the difficulties students encounter during face-to-face activities as reported in previous studies carried out by the authors during their teaching careers. LOs allow Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to be used as an aid to face-to-face learning, with reorganized learning and teaching strategies. LOs are available in the university’s own virtual environment, Eureka, and can be accessed by approximately 14,000 students and more than 1,200 teaching staff at the institution. Student feedback was also collected and is described here.

The development of information technology that is very rapidly grown nowa-days, particularly the development of information and communication technology enriches the development of the concept of learning based on blended learning. The characteristics of its apparatus, which can always be accessed anytime, any-where, multiuser and offers all its simplicity have made blended learning as a me-dium of instruction which is very appropriate for the development of education. One of the courses considered essential to utilize the information and communica-tion technology is a research statistics because the process of learning, this course has two fundamental parts which cannot be separated to one another, namely the-ory and practice. Thus, it needs a plan of learning activities which combine face-to-face learning and online-based learning interaction. The research was required to conduct to develop blended learning on research statistics course for the stu-dents of English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Facul-ty of Borneo Tarakan University under a Research and Development by using the ADDIE’s model. The evaluation which was conducted to find out validity, prac-ticality, and effectiveness of blended learning drew three main conclusions: First, the design and development of learning devices were appropriate to be used as guidelines in implementing the learning process. Second, the process of learning was implemented in accordance with the plans and learning devices as well as a learning setting. Third, the students’ learning achievement was classically com-pleted. Thus, the blended learning was found to be valid, practical, and effective for the development of learning

<p><strong> </strong></p><p align="center"><strong><em>Abstract</em></strong></p><p>               <em>The development of technology, especially information technology (internet), gradually unintentionally gives influence to education either directly or indirectly. The influence is clearly visible one of them to the method of learning. Learning methods that used to be done only face-to-face in the classroom and make the educator as a center of information (conventional) gradually begin to change towards learning that is also on-line based on the internet as an information center (E-Learning internet based). In STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat E-Learning internet based learning method itself has been introduced and implemented since 2014, but has not been maximally optimized. This is because the method does not have a standard in its implementation, and also conventional face-to-face learning method can not be abandoned completely, hence there is overlap between the two. Accordingly, this study developed a model of learning that combines the concept of conventional learning with the concept of E-Learning internet based called Blended Learning. Blended Learning model is expected to be a solution to the above problems, so that the learning process can be implemented effectively. Metode pembelajaran yang dulunya dilakukan hanya secara tatap muka di dalam kelas dan menjadikan pendidik sebagai pusat informasi (konvensional) berangsur mulai berubah ke arah pembelajaran yang juga bersifat on-line yang berbasis kepada internet sebagai pusat informasi (E-Learning internet based). Di STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat metode pembelajaran E-Learning internet based sendiri sudah diperkenalkan dan diterapkan sejak tahun 2014, tetapi belum telaksana secara maksimal. Hal ini disebabkan karena metode tersebut belum memiliki standar baku dalam pelaksanaannya, dan juga metode pembelajaran tatap muka secara konvensional belum bisa ditinggalkan secara utuh, karenanya terjadi tumpang tindih antara keduanya. Sehubungan dengan itu, pada penelitian ini dikembangkan sebuah model pembelajaran yang menggabungkan konsep pembelajaran konvensional dengan konsep E-Learning internet based yang disebut dengan Blended Learning. Model pembelajaran Blended Learning ini nantinya diharapkan dapat menjadi solusi atas permasalahan tersebut di atas, sehingga proses pembelajaran dapat terlaksana secara efektif. The use of online role-plays has grown in university education as an increasing number of teachers in a variety of discipline areas utilise role-play simulations in the online environment. The focus of this chapter is on design options for asynchronous online role-plays that may assist students to integrate theory and practice and develop skills in reflexive practice. The design options discussed in this chapter adopt a “blended” learning approach where online learning is used to complement face-to-face learning. Five models of online role-plays are discussed and various learning and teaching strategies canvassed to assist those teaching in the human services area to adopt and adapt these design options to meet their curriculum objectives.

Despite continuous advances in the Internet and educational technology, the primary online pedagogy remains asynchronous chat, posted learning materials, and video clips. Blended learning was one approach universities have added to improve student success in online courses. The purpose of this 3-year pilot study was to evaluate the benefit of fusing weekly video classes within an online doctoral program as an alternative to on-campus classes. The sessions incorporated an interactive, student-centered pedagogy formulated to strengthen research and writing skills, increase student motivation, and reduce isolation. The level of student-student and student-teacher interaction was equivalent to face-to-face learning. Findings indicated that student satisfaction, motivation, skills, and scholarship increased. As personal bonds developed among students and faculty, student isolation decreased. The results of this preliminary study suggest that online video classes may be a cost-effective alternative to blended learning.

Over the past few years, there has been a rapid increase in the development of technology-based learning and teaching. Professors have become more pragmatic in their approach to technology-based media by using it to supplement or to replace traditional face-to-face teaching. Blended learning, which combines both electronic and face-to-face interaction, has gained more ground as midway between distance and face-to-face teaching approaches. Thus, opportunities for both educators and learners have been created. The teaching and learning approach adopted at Ajman University of Science and Technology (AUST) combines an equal balance of traditional face-to-face and videoconference learning, complemented with the use of a learning management system (Moodle). Student and instructor satisfaction is considered the most important factor in measuring the quality of blended learning. The purpose of this chapter is, therefore, to examine student and instructor satisfaction of blended learning at AUST. The chapter demonstrates that the majority of students and instructors hold positive views but are still attached to the traditional face-to-face learning and teaching. They also show that the level of satisfaction may depend on individual experience as well as on the major studied/taught.

Learning with technology or e-learning has been taking place in all areas of education including in learning and teaching of Arabic language. Despite the widespread use of e-learning for Arabic language, in line with the current technological advancements, the role of face-to-face classroom interactions must not be neglected. Face-to-face learning and e-learning have their own strengths.  Hence, a combination of both elements in teaching and learning as afforded by blended learning may be an excellent choice. This study seeks to identify student readiness in learning Arabic language based on blended learning approach among students at university level.  The research took place at University Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Malaysia involving 248 students.  The students were asked to answer the distributed questionnaires.  The questionnaires used 1-5 points Likert scale which are strongly not agree, not agree, not sure, agree and strongly agree. The need analysis encompassed the presence of facilities supporting blended learning, the internet and e-learning literacy among students and their readiness to adopt blended learning. The findings highlight the important roles played by both the students and the institution in providing facilities needed to support blended learning. The findings also reported that the existing facilities are in a state of readiness for the implementation of blended learning. The institution provides wireless connection throughout the campus while 96% of the students own a laptop. In addition, students are also discovered to be internet-savvy besides displaying readiness to adopt blended learning. Further studies are recommended in exploring how to design and develop successful blended learning in teaching and learning Arabic language.
