This paper presents a game theoretic view of collaborative work and suggests that the design of effective GDSS tools should be guided by the way the tool discourages dysfunctional gaming behavior. We present an illustrative experimental study that investigates the influence of communication channel, incentive structure, and problem modeling tools on decision performance, diversity of solutions, and information exchange truthfulness in collaborating groups.

This article presents an interview study of telepathic experiences induced by psychedelic drugs, with the aim of broadening our understanding of the nature and characteristics of such experiences. Of 40 psychedelics users interviewed about their experiences, 16 reported some form of psychedelic telepathy. Respondents were recruited at various online fora for individual interviews via private messaging. They reported three main types of telepathic communication: 1) an information-exchange type of telepathy that often enabled people to communicate in images as well as words; 2) a type sometimes referred to as telempathy that allowed for the direct exchange of feeling-states; 3) a state of self-dissolution and telepathic unity where one could not differentiate one’s own thoughts and feelings from those of the friend or partner. Some participants complained about the lack of privacy especially in the more intense forms of telepathic states, and were hesitant to repeat the experience, while others claimed they had become accustomed to such states and experienced them regularly. The article concludes that further studies are warranted, and suggests a research design for an experimental study of psychedelic telepathy. Dynamic spectrum access is envisioned as a promising paradigm for addressing the spectrum under-utilization problem. According to the recent ruling of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for white-space spectrum access, white-space devices are required to query a geo-location database to determine the spectrum availability. This chapter adopts a game theoretic approach for the self-organizing white-space spectrum access network design. This chapter first models the distributed channel selection problem among the devices as a distributed spectrum access game, and shows that the game is a potential game. This chapter then designs a self-organizing spectrum access algorithm which can achieve a Nash equilibrium of the game without any information exchange among the devices. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is efficient and can adapt to the dynamical network context changing.

The growth in importance of communities within organisational settings is a sign of a change in paradigm. When management and organisational theory introduce the critical notion of communities, in parallel to the concepts of collaborative work and of knowledge sharing, there is an internal revolution going on. Therefore, communities of practice theory (Lave & Wenger, 1991; Wenger, 1999; Wenger, McDermott & Snyder, 2002; Brown & Duguid, 1991) has a critical role to play in today’s development of management and organisation theory. At a broader level, there is an ongoing metamorphosis that is highly visible through the vertiginous development of technology, the globalisation of markets, and the acceleration of the increase in complexity. Equally important are the less visible, and thus harder to acknowledge, changes in the way we think, reason, communicate, and construct our image of ourselves and of the world. The changes brought by the knowledge society of the information age (Kearmally, 1999) triggered the development of theoretical approaches to management. Among these, knowledge management and organisational learning have developed. These theories have acknowledged the importance of information and communication technology within organisations, and have explored alternative insights into mainstream management approaches. The knowledge management and organisational learning sub-disciplines represent an innovation effort that affect areas of organisational life which had been marginalised or ignored under traditional management theory. Communities of practice is the single most important example. Therefore, communities of practice represent a critical aspect of the present understanding of the complexity of organisational life. Within the broad and varied development of organisational theories, semiotic learning emerges as a particular approach to organisational learning. Semiotic learning may be described as a dynamic practice. It incorporates theoretical contributions from social philosophy and adapts them to a specific approach to facilitate learning at the organisational level. It is a learning and development tool for action at the organisational level. The central aspect of the semiotic learning approach is the focus on the quality of community life at the organisational level. Through a semiotic learning approach to organisational learning and development, it is possible to intensify and to unleash the true potential of current challenges at personal, organisational, and societal levels. By focusing on the social practices, structures, and processes which underlay human interaction, and by calling attention to the way we construct ourselves and our image of the world through those interactions, it enables the development of a rationale that supports collaborative as well as transformative forms of work and learning.

AbstractMoiré lattices formed in twisted van der Waals bilayers provide a unique, tunable platform to realize coupled electron or exciton lattices unavailable before. While twist angle between the bilayer has been shown to be a critical parameter in engineering the moiré potential and enabling novel phenomena in electronic moiré systems, a systematic experimental study as a function of twist angle is still missing. Here we show that not only are moiré excitons robust in bilayers of even large twist angles, but also properties of the moiré excitons are dependant on, and controllable by, the moiré reciprocal lattice period via twist-angle tuning. From the twist-angle dependence, we furthermore obtain the effective mass of the interlayer excitons and the electron inter-layer tunneling strength, which are difficult to measure experimentally otherwise. These findings pave the way for understanding and engineering rich moiré-lattice induced phenomena in angle-twisted semiconductor van der Waals heterostructures.

This article aims to highlight the characteristics of the collaborative methodology for error correction of L2 students’ texts. The article points out the following components: interaction, dialogue, discussion, scaffolding, ZPD (Zone of proximal development), and positive interdependence; these components also favor the active participation of all members of a group during error correction. In addition, the paper emphasizes the way the collaborative work can activate the metalinguistic component, and can enhance the effect of corrective feedback provided by the teacher to a group.

Autonomous indoor service robots are supposed to accomplish tasks, like serve a cup, which involve manipulation actions. Particularly, for complex manipulation tasks which are subject to geometric constraints, spatial information and a rich semantic knowledge about objects, types, and functionality are required, together with the way in which these objects can be manipulated. In this line, this paper presents an ontological-based reasoning framework called Perception and Manipulation Knowledge (PMK) that includes: (1) the modeling of the environment in a standardized way to provide common vocabularies for information exchange in human-robot or robot-robot collaboration, (2) a sensory module to perceive the objects in the environment and assert the ontological knowledge, (3) an evaluation-based analysis of the situation of the objects in the environment, in order to enhance the planning of manipulation tasks. The paper describes the concepts and the implementation of PMK, and presents an example demonstrating the range of information the framework can provide for autonomous robots.

In recent years, with the rapid development of the complex building structures, the lack of collaborative work platform for the information exchange between different disciplines results in the phenomenon of information gap and information isolated island. Realizing such a demand, a software was developed for supporting information transformation from IFC-format data model to structural model. In this paper, A case study was implemented to illustrate the method of structural model transformation, The results show that the software can extract the information of IFC structural model and form a corresponding structural model.

Si/Si1−xGex superlattices are promising candidates for thermoelectric energy conversion applications [1, 2], as the phonon transport through them can be inhibited while maintaining desirable electrical transport properties. No comprehensive experimental study has been performed to map the thermal conductivity design space accessible by Si/Ge nanocomposites. By using atomistic modeling tools, interesting areas of the design space can be identified and then further explored experimentally.
