Visualization in Support of Social Networking on the Web

In this chapter the authors explore the contribution visualization can make to the new interfaces of the Semantic Web in terms of the quality of presentation of content. In doing this they discuss some of the underlying technologies enabling the Web and the social forces that are driving the further development of user-manipulable interfaces.

The hypertext visionaries foresaw the potential of richly interlinked global information systems for advancing human knowledge. The Web provided the infrastructure to enable those ideas to become a reality, and it quickly became a platform for collaborative research and data sharing. As the Web has evolved, new ways of using it for eResearch have emerged, such as the social networking facilities enabled by Web 2.0 technologies. The next generation of the Web—the so-called Semantic Web—is now on the horizon, which will again enable new types of collaborative research to emerge. If we are to understand and anticipate these new modes of collaboration, we need a discipline that studies the Web as a whole. Web science is this discipline.

During 39th session of UNESCO General Conference which held on 7 November 2017 the date May 16th was proclaimed as International Day of Light (IDL). This decision was made after the success of the International Year of Light (IYL) celebrated in 2015. It confirmed that raising awareness of the social role of photonics is crucial for further development. Based on the rich experience of IYL 2015 ("more than 13,000 activities took place in 147 countries to reach an estimated 100 million people"), the most important goals are to be followed by the IDL, including: raising social awareness, education, showing the influence of photonics on culture and art, promoting foreign cooperation and the important role of conducting basic research. As a result, it will lead to the creation of new solutions based on photonic technology, which has resulted in increased energy efficiency and improved quality of our life.

Death is often a taboo topic and, consequently, there is a reluctance to address matters such as the cultural importance of after-life reputations and ancestor remembrance in the social work field. Reflecting on filial piety studies with Korean participants, this article aims to call attention to such death-related issues and their implications for end-of-life, palliative social work practice and research. The term ‘memorial social work’ is used to help practitioners broaden the scope and quality of social work associated with people who have died and their surviving families. The discussion in this paper includes issues related to filial piety and attitudes towards ageing parents, ancestor honour and remembrance and family continuity. The areas to which memorial social work are particularly pertinent are suggested for further development.

The social consequences of the internet are profound. Evidence of this can easily be found in the enormous body of literature discussing its impact on democracy, globalization, social networking, and education. The implications of the internet for medicine have likewise received a great deal of attention from policy makers, clinicians and technology theorists. Medical privacy, in particular, has garnered the lion’s share of attention. Nevertheless, research in this area has been lacking because it either fails to unpack the conceptual and ethical complexities of privacy or overestimates the power of technology and policy to protect our medical privacy. The aims of this chapter are twofold. The first is to provide a nuanced explication of the concept of privacy, and, second, to argue that e-medicine and the policies supposedly designed to protect the privacy and confidentiality of personal health information fail to do so and in some instances make their violations easier to commit.

Over the last decade, vast research has been conducted on assistive technology devices and the potential implementation of these devices in the daily lives of individuals with disabilities. Many devices are new to the public and may require further development, but it is important to disseminate information about these useful technologies, which often afford users more independence with their activities of daily living. Unfortunately individuals with disabilities often encounter stigma; research suggests that assistive technology devices may at times contribute to this ostracism. This chapter reviews a variety of technologies that have been used to improve the quality of life of individuals with varying disabilities. These devices are presented in the context of introducing a new children's television show, Realabilities, a pro-social and stop-bullying children's television program that seeks to enhance the social interaction and initiation of typical children towards children with disabilities. Directions for future research and implementation of these devices are also discussed.

The annals of the Web have been a defining moment in the evolution of education and e-Learning. The evolution of Web 1.0 almost three decades ago has been a precursor to Web 3.0 that has reshaped education and learning today. The evolution to Web 3.0 has been synonymous with “Semantic Web” or “Artificial Intelligence” (AI). AI makes it possible to deliver custom content to the learners based on their learning behavior and preferences. For the effective development of the social state, it is necessary to take measures to improve the quality and life expectancy of citizens on the basis of improving health-saving technologies, which requires proper scientific support. The purpose of the work is a retrospective and prognostic study of the Russian publication scientific stream on rehabilitation and scientometric indicators for a reliable assessment of its dynamics. A high (third) place of Russia in the international publication rating from 53 countries in 1991 under the «Rehabilitation» subsection in the Web of Science database was revealed, which was replaced by a substantial, fourfold, downgrade in subsequent years, and an increase in the array of publications in this field of knowledge in the last 5 years, which, however, did not lead the country to the number of leaders. The growth of the national publication stream in 2018 to the 20th place among 100 countries in the Web of Science database and the 15th place among 152 in Scopus is associated with the results of the implementation of government measures. It is proved that the share of scientists in the global array of publications registered in highranking databases is a more objective indicator of publication activity than their country’s place in the ranking. Improving the quality of scientific support for the development of rehabilitation technologies in the context of an increasing proportion of elderly and senile people, growth of diseases with a long life span, increasing demands on the level of self-care and mutual care of the population due to urbanization and small families will contribute to the formation of a socially stable society and increase national security of Russia. A prognostic model is proposed for changing the volume of Russian publications on rehabilitation, according to which the 1991 level in the Scopus database is expected in 2020, and in the Web of Science — only in 2028.

Most people are more or less related to the web by participating in a kind of social networking site. Semantic Web technology plays a crucial role in these sites as they contain an enormous amount of data about ‎persons, pages, events, places, corporations, etc. This research is a Semantic Web application designed to create a new ‎semantic social community called Socialpedia. It links the already existing social public information to the newly ‎public ones. This information is linked with different information on the web to construct a new immense ‎data container. The resulting data container can be processed using a variety of Semantic Web techniques to produce ‎machine-understandable content. This content shows the promise of using integrated data to improve Web search and ‎Web-scale data analysis, unlike conventional search engines or social ones. This community involves obtaining data ‎from traditional users known as contributors or participants, linking data from existing social networks, extracting ‎structured data in triples using predefined ontologies, and finally querying and inferring such data to obtain ‎meaningful pieces of information. Socailpedia supports all popular functionalities of social networking websites ‎besides the enhanced features of the Semantic Web, providing advanced semantic search that acts as a semantic ‎search engine.
