Integrating Web 2.0 Technologies within the Enterprise

This chapter examines the elements of the new Web 2.0 technology base and reviews the lessons learned when implementing these technologies. Collaborative applications have made enormous inroads into the enterprise and bring unprecedented speed and transparency to communications. Researchers and practitioners alike are focusing on how collaborative applications can replace the one-way communications inherent to Intranet sites. This chapter is intended for individuals who are looking toward the possibility of integrating these new technologies into the core communication medium. Unfortunately, there are still large barriers such as politics, turf battles, integration, and poor usability with the current product set. A company’s ability to manage information effectively over its life cycle, including sensing, collecting, organizing, processing, and maintaining information, is crucial to the long term success in a global economy. The success or failure of this integration may very well create or lose a competitive advantage for the enterprise. What is missing is a framework or roadmap in which organizations can plan out their execution of We 2.0 deployment.

The dynamic nature of today's global economy places a premium on a firm's ability to anticipate and to respond to customer needs as well as changing competitive pressures. Within this environment, developing a successful logistics strategy can be critical to the firm's long-term competitive success. This paper looks at the potential for using the product life cycle (PLC) as a strategic framework in the logistics strategy planning process. Results of an empirical study that investigated the appropriate use of 43 logistics techniques across PLC stages are reported. The implementation status of the various logistics techniques is also considered.

Security as we perceive it today became a topic of research with the introduction of networked information systems, or networked ISs, in the early 1980s. In the mid-1990s the proliferation of the Internet in the business area exposed security as one of the key factors for successful online business, and the majority of efforts to provide it were focused on technology. However, due to lessons learned during this period, the paradigms have since changed, with increasing emphasis on human factors. It is a fact that security of networked ISs is becoming part of the core processes in all e-business environments. While data is clearly one of the key assets and has to be protected accordingly, ISs have to be highly integrated and open. Appropriate treatment of these contradictory issues is not a trivial task for managers of contemporary intelligent organizations. It requires new approaches, especially in light of new technologies.

In contextual evolution of the global economy and new technologies, quality, competitiveness, and cost engage companies to focus on continuous improvement and innovation. This approach is highly visible in the bearing industry, due to the emergence and improvement of existing and new types of bearings.The authors of the paper are engaged in a long-term research, which aims to improve the performance of heavy bearings, including identification of new constructive solution. The study is focused on the characteristics and constructive structure of the bearings cages in discussion.In this context, it is logical that the research focuses upon known bearings cages that are currently used [1], as well as unknown or unapplied constructive solutions which are the subject of patents.The critical analysis of various constructive cage solutions for bearings, intended or not for heavy bearings, is a valuable source of inspiration and information towards identification of constructive elements and characteristics useful to develop new technical solutions, by applying integrations, combinations, innovations and development processes [2].In the presented paper several patents are analyzed critically [3, 4, 5], in terms of constructive solutions, manufacturing complexity and presumptive operational energy consumption.

As the world's consumption of non-renewable fuels continues to grow, so do the associated problems. Coal, gas and nuclear are all on the rise with each presenting significant environmental problems. The fossil fuels contribute to global warming through CO2 emissions as well as polluting the environment through particulates and waste products. Nuclear energy, whilst cleaner, still produces significant and long-term dangerous waste products. In addition, the raw materials are finite and will be exhausted sometime this century. The battle to develop effective clean alternatives is one of the key fights that will come to define the 21st century. The process will require considerable innovation and greater effort by business and state to improve the situation. Many researchers are working towards a myriad of different solutions that, together, could form the basis for re-gearing the global economy towards the use of renewable and sustainable resources and fuels. One such alternative is the fuel cell and variations of this. A fuel cell harnesses the energy released when hydrogen combines with oxygen to form water to produce electricity. Its inputs are cheap and readily available whilst its outputs are completely clean. In order to effectively assimilate new technologies such as these, it is necessary to consider how this technology can be applied and integrated into modern life. Doing so will allow new technologies to be adopted and employed far quicker after development. Two researchers from Setsunan University, Japan are working together to make cheap and renewable fuel cells that can be integrated directly into new, green architecture.

Car production is a kind of activity that affects environment, society and global economy to a large degree. The most negative impact can be observed in the first of mentioned fields. Every day automotive companies consume big amount of energy and resources. What is more, their final products are considered as one of the main pollution sources. Nevertheless many car producers made effort to minimize negative external effects of their businesses. Year by year various CSR classifications and rankings showed that those efforts were resultful but Volkswagen emissions scandal and anti-diesel lobby shed new light on car industry in the terms of CSR. The aim of the article is to review CSR activities undertaken by Audi AG. Literature review and report analysis performed within the case study shows that the company is active in the field of ecology, society and corporate governance. In many terms Audi AG can be considered as the one of global CSR leaders. It is characterized by wide range of long term initiatives, high employee satisfaction and constant dialogue with stakeholders. On the other hand Audi AG can not be seen as a responsible company in the light of misleading customers to raise sales volume.

In the 21st century, medicine alongside with medical education, is a dynamically developing industry, and is experiencing a real renaissance of its development. New technologies are gradually replacing the old methods, which undoubtedly increases the quality of provided services, reducing the probability of medical errors, and favourably affects the mortality rate (for example, echocardiography, both transthoracic and intra-oesophageal, has replaced percussion and heart palpation). However, relatively old methods, for example, such as auscultation of the heart, still do not lose their significance or effectiveness, in particular, it is worth noting the high information content of this instrumental examination when dealing with valvular pathologies of the heart (for example, critical aortic stenosis). It is known that any educational institution, in particular, a medical one, must keep abreast of the times and correspond to modern needs. The management of medical universities, making long-term strategies for their development, in order to increase competitiveness, both their own and the one of their students, should maximally provide their clinics with the latest equipment, which will undoubtedly allow preserving its niche, perhaps at the regional or world level. For example, the Yerevan State Medical University named after Mkhitar Heratsi is of inter-regional importance, being the leading medical educational institution among the countries of the Caucasus and the Anterior Asia. In the process of introducing new technologies among students of medical universities, a competence-based approach is the opening of highly equipped imulation centres, where the future doctor and/or a certain doctor will be given a unique in the medical world chance, a chance for error, since it is well-known that a doctor’s mistake can cost life of the whole people. This article is devoted to the pivotal role of the simulation centre within the modern educational system of medical universities as well as the strategy for its construction. The article develops an analysis of visual knowledge and the use of pictures in electronic communication. The author focuses in particular on indexical images, which we use in navigat-ing multimedia documents and the Web. For this purpose, the author bases his study on the one hand on semiotics, the core concepts of which were intro-duced by C.S. Peirce at the beginning of the last century; and on the other hand on a more classical historical analy-sis, in order to point out the deep roots of the concepts used in contemporary computer-based communication.
