Organizational Factors and Technological Barriers are Determinants for the Intention to Use Wireless Handheld Technology in Healthcare Environment

Traditional technology adoption models identified ‘ease of use’ and ‘usefulness’ as the dominating factors for technology adoption. However, recent studies in healthcare have established that these two factors are not always reliable on their own and other factors may influence technology adoption. To establish the identity of these factors, a mixed method approach was used and data were collected through interviews and a survey. The survey instrument was specifically developed for this study so that it is relevant to the Indian healthcare setting. Authors identified clinical management and technological barriers as the dominant factors influencing the wireless handheld technology adoption in the Indian healthcare environment. The results of this study showed that new technology models will benefit by considering the clinical influences of wireless handheld technology, in addition to known factors. The scope of this study is restricted to wireless handheld devices such as PDAs, smart telephones, and handheld PCs.

(1) Background: There is increasing scholarly support for the notion that properly implemented and used, technology can be of substantial benefit for older adults. Use of technology has been associated with improved self-rating of health and fewer chronic conditions. Use of technology such as handheld devices by older adults has the potential to improve engagement and promote cognitive and physical health. However, although, literature suggests some willingness by older adults to use technology, simultaneously there are reports of a more cautious attitude to its adoption. Our objective was to determine the opinions towards information technologies, with special reference to brain health, in healthy older adults either fully retired or still working in some capacity including older adult workers and retired adults living in an independent elderly living community. We were especially interested in further our understanding of factors that may play a role in technology adoption and its relevance to addressing health related issues in this population; (2) Methods: Two focus groups were conducted in an inner-city community. Participants were older adults with an interest in their general health and prevention of cognitive decline. They were asked to discuss their perceptions of and preferences for the use of technology. Transcripts were coded for thematic analysis; (3) Results: Seven common themes emerged from the focus group interviews: physical health, cognitive health, social engagement, organizing information, desire to learn new technology, advancing technology, and privacy/security; and (4) Conclusions: This study suggests that in order to promote the use of technology in older adults, one needs to consider wider contextual issues, not only device design per se, but the older adult’s rationale for using technology and their socio-ecological context.

PurposeBlockchain is a relatively new technology. Although it has a high potential to influence organizational strategies for adoption into respective operations, it has not been widely explored yet. This study aims to assess the sectoral diversity in the timing of organizational adoption of blockchain through selected organizational factors.Design/methodology/approachA survey was conducted based on a sample of 208 IT professionals. The data was collected using an instrument containing 17 questions. The existence of sector diversity was statistically analyzed using the Least Square Regression method.FindingsThe results indicate that, except for management support and perceived ease of use, all the other factors in the analysis significantly influence sector diversity in terms of blockchain adoption timing.Originality/valueAlthough blockchain has received attention from researchers, to the best of the authors' knowledge, there is no published work in the literature that explores the organizational factors influencing sectoral differences in the timing of blockchain technology adoption. Therefore, our work is unique in the related literature since we present analyses for the diversity between public and private sectors by modeling the factors affecting the intentions for the timing of blockchain adoption as part of the organizations' IT infrastructure.

This chapter describes the integration of handheld computers in K-12 classrooms and its impact on digital literacy. Following a brief description of this new technology for education, teacher stories are used to illustrate what types of educational activities are possible above and beyond what is possible with available technology, what pedagogical changes need to be made to effectively integrate handheld technology in K-12 classrooms, how handheld devices can be adapted to harness their full potential as ubiquitous devices for teaching and learning, and how digital literacy skills influence and are being influenced by this technology. The ultimate goal of the author is to show that handheld computers have the potential to have a tremendous impact on teaching and learning, given the right context.

Despite the proliferation and use of handheld technology tools (such as Smartphones and Tablet PCs) along with software applications within the general US populace, little is known regarding their specific use by dietetics practitioners and instructors. As part of a dietetics informatics project to develop useful visualizations from nutrition datasets, the researchers sought first to explore how those in the field viewed the use of these handheld devices. The authors describe an exploratory survey study intended to investigate the current uses of new technology tools such as personal digital assistants like Smartphones and Tablet PCs by dietetic practitioners and instructors (from institutes of higher education and from Extension programs). Results revealed that a majority either do not own the latest technology or, if they do, use it primarily for personal use. Results also demonstrated that the target audiences had minimal experience with emerging technologies such as apps and visualizations. However, results showed that the target audiences did have a strong interest in learning the use of these tools and applications within their field. Respondents offered many ideas for useful applications while indicating that they required more instruction in how to utilize nutrition visualizations and apps within their classroom or field.

Information systems have enjoyed their fair share of success over the years. Various technology adoption theories and models have been used to understand the factors that cause users to harmonize with new technology. Although the technology acceptance model is the most widely used of all technology adoption theories and also gives room for the addition of an external variable, many experts believe that a rudimentary construct should govern its core variables in the field with which it is applied. This believes system birthed the TAM 2 model, which came with an external variable to the extant TAM model. One of the firm beliefs upheld by the TAM model is that “perceived ease of use” fuels users’ intention to accept and adopt new IS systems or otherwise. The TAM 2 or Extended TAM model is driven by the notion that a unique and influential construct in the context of the technology or the object being assessed would improve the result’s accuracy. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to introduce mobile skillfulness as an influential construct that regulates the perception of ease and usefulness in the technology acceptance model for the assessment of mobile-related technologies. This study aims to develop an extended model from the extant TAM model that befits the acceptance assessments of mobile-related technologies such as applications and mobile games. The method used in this article is a literature survey to explore and understand the technology acceptance model (TAM), which would match mobile-related technology. The comprehensive conceptual model has been constructed in this article.

Tech-friendliness in this new era is an important quotient considered and the persons’ acceptance towards the technology frequency matters a lot. But still the frequency varies from person to person, this brought in the concept of Technology Acceptance Model given by Fred Davis in 1989. The theory of TAM is based on two theories that are Theory of Reasoned Action and Theory of Planned Behavior, TAM is extended version of these two. Green Banking is a new technology introduced by the banks that focuses on the growth of Sustainable development and Banking system too. Thus, banks ask their customers to use it or practice it in their daily life transactions. But every customer has their own point of view on the usage of Green banking. Thus, the research aims to understand the customers’ perception towards the Green Banking for this TAM is used. The research states that Perceived risk is the primary factor that is followed by perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use that impacts the decision to use green banking. Thus, the behavioral intention results in actual use of green banking usage for which people are trying to accept the new technology. So, the banks have earned points for creating awareness among their customers but still they have to work hard and clarify their customers’ problems and vanish that hitch that is stopping them to use green banking easily.

Mobile phones have undeniably brought a paradigm shift, affecting both the lives of people and the business environment. Today, mobile phone has permeated the lives of billions of people around the world, becoming for many an indispensable device. Moreover, adoption of mobile banking has significant impact on reducing costs and enabling change in retail banking. Factors influencing the intention to use or adopt mobile banking are very important and will play a vital role for mobile banking service providers. The proposed study focuses on a comprehensive set of potential factors that influence the adoption of mobile banking. The research model identifies appropriate factors and captures dependency relationships among these factors in the form of a number of hypotheses to be tested in this research. This paper aims to design a scale with a high degree of reliability, validity, and dimensionality which helps to determine the appropriate technology adoption model based on the identified constructs, viz. Optimism (OPTI), Innovativeness (INNO), Insecurity (INSC), Discomfort (DISC), Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PEU), Perceived Risk (PR), Subjective Norms (SN), Attitude (ATTI), Behavioural Control (BC) and Behavioural Intention (BI). The data were collected through questionnaire survey from 201 respondents comprising software engineers, bank employees, professors, entrepreneurs. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the validity of the proposed measurement scale for all the identified constructs. This instrument helps bankers to determine and design there applications which will contribute to the knowledge of predicting customer intention.

ABSTRACTDo world politics affect the adoption of new technology? States overwhelmingly rely on technology invented abroad, and their differential intensity of technology use accounts for many of their differences in economic development. Much of the literature on technology adoption focuses on domestic conditions. The authors argue instead that the structure of the international system is critical because it affects the level of competition among states, which in turn affects leaders’ willingness to enact policies that speed technology adoption. Countries adopt new technology as they seek to avoid being vulnerable to attack or coercion by other countries. By systematically examining states’ adoption of technology over the past two hundred years, the authors find that countries adopt new technologies faster when the international system is less concentrated, that changes in systemic concentration have a temporally causal effect on technology adoption, and that government policies to promote technology adoption are related to concerns about rising international competition. A competitive international system is an important incentive for technological change and may underlie global technology waves.
