The Nautical Station concept is achieved through the establishment and/or assertion (depending on the extent of maturity) of a tourist destination arranged from maritime products that value, in a unified way, all the resources of a territory (foundation, environment, and sociocultural roots) and all the touristic offer already existing in this regional area. It combines a set of nautical activities that forms the central element of product management, based on a local/regional partnership, according to a set of quality criteria to be defined by the certifying entity, which in the Portuguese case is Forum Oceano – Association of Maritime Economy. This chapter analyzes the development of the certification process of the Portuguese Nautical Stations, the theoretical model that manages it, and its application to reality based on the study case constructed by the Nautical Station of Sines, one of the first 15 certified in Portugal.

ABSTRACT This paper belongs to the current lines of research on women in the pre-industrial maritime economy. It offers a study case focused on “captaines” and “shipmistresses” during the rise of corsair activity in Majorca between 1635-80. We remark the role of these women representing their husbands while they were absent. Some of them did an outstanding job assuming agency when the situation demanded to go further than what the deputyship established. We also state “captaines” and “shipmistresses” had greater prominence in four areas of a corsair business, in which family was essential.

Structural equation model (LISREL 8) was applied to test the causal relationships between tourist travel motivations and tourist destination.A survey containing Likert scale questions was conducted to collect data from 100 tourists who had travelled to Greece’s tourist destination. With the help of factor analysis, four dimensions were identified for scales used in the study: travel cost satisfaction, tourism product, tourism product attributes, and tourism product management. Results indicated that the travel cost satisfaction of tourists has a positive influence on tourism product, tourism product attributes and tourism product management. Moreover, our results suggested that the tourist demographics has a positive influence on tourism product and tourism product attributes and has an insignificant relationship with tourism product management. Based on our findings the tourist demographics has not influence on tourism product management. However, these findings suggest that both the private tourism and the governmental tourism sector should develop a better management of tourist destinations so as to develop a stronger attraction of tourism, better amenities, a better accessibility, an appropriate image, to make tourism competitive and to keep tourism product prices at a reasonable level. The implications of the tourism demand model can be used for the public environmental policy-making process based mainly on reasons of interest, ideology or understanding.

Abstract The paper focuses on the adaption of the theoretical models of the regional tourism competitiveness to the conditions of the Czech Republic. The authors of this study analyze a newly emerged theoretical model of regional competitiveness monitoring with respect to the current data availability. The ultimate aim is to specify a proposal for the Czech national tourism organization (CzechTourism) in terms of practical usage and monitoring of the competitiveness model. The principal question is how and why to monitor the competitiveness of a tourist destination at the regional and national levels in the Czech Republic. The next step of the project is the conducting of the research, testing of the model and the implementation.

This paper gives an overview of the innovation strategies in Japan tourism industry, a study case in Fukui Prefecture. Fukui is not as a major tourist destination in Japan. Maybe people are more familiar with Tokyo, Kyoto and other big cities in Japan. It is common that foreign tourists prefer to travel to big cities or famous places. To make Fukui prefecture known in overseas, local government enacts policy strategies by utilizing all potentials. This paper explains concretely by the efforts made by the regional government. Regional government established Fukui-ken Kankou Shinsenryaku’s policy. Fukui Prefectural Tourism Strategy Policy is implemented through promotion. Promotions are made through personal selling by utilizing foreigners living in Fukui. Foreigners in Fukui are invited to become Fukui reporters and ambassadors. As a Fukui reporter and the Fukui ambassador, they have a duty to promote Fukui through SNS (Social Networking Service). They also get priviledge, such as get free and discount entry to museum, and other tourism destination. The effectiveness of the strategy innovation is also presented in this paper by using visitor arrival’s data based on Fukui-ken Kankoukyaku Irikomisuu.

Abstract Tourism is an extremely complex field and in order to understand its complexity, none of its components should be left aside. That's why, as many other researchers have done before, the present paper aims to analyze the central element of the entire tourist activity: the tourist. Based on the impressions, opinions and thoughts of Romanian tourists, we tried to determine to what extent the image of the destination they have recently visited has an impact on the satisfaction and loyalty they have towards that destination. Therefore, this paper represents a market research aimed at assessing the image of the Romanian tourist destinations as perceived by the Romanian tourists who visited them and to what extent their satisfaction and intentions to revisit/recommend can be influenced by it. The sample consisted of 200 Romanian tourists, contacted both directly and through social networks, who have visited a tourist destination in Romania with at least one night of accommodation in the last 5 years. Following the statistical analysis of the answers provided, it was found out that there are a number of elements of major importance for the Romanian tourists, while other aspects have a slightly influence on their satisfaction and loyalty. The conclusions of this research should be taken into account by all the stakeholders involved in the development and promotion of tourist destinations in Romania, as the contribution of tourism to the economic and cultural development of a country is an important one, according to some official reports.

Among researchers' many investigations of the use of mixed methods in intervention studies, more recent discussions especially concern the roles played in such studies by qualitative research, intervention phases, procedures, and integration (Gallo and Lee, 2016; Woolcock, 2018; O'Cathain, 2018; Creswell and Plano Clark, 2018). One can find the basic procedures to follow while realizing a mixed methods experimental design (Creswell and Plano Clark, 2018), practical guidance (O'Cathain, 2018) for using qualitative research with a randomized control trial (RCT), and a mixed methods appraisal tool for appraising the methodological quality of RCTs, non-randomized studies, and mixed methods – MMAT (Hong et al., 2018). However, no model exists to assess the quality of mixed methods research in intervention studies, particularly experimental and quasi-experimental research in complex interventions. Our aim is to develop such a theoretical model. Today, the number of interventions relying on mixed methods methodology is growing exponentially. A theoretical model is called for to help assess the quality of mixed methods research in intervention studies, and in this respect our aim is to: (1) provide an overview of guidelines, recommendations, models, and quality criteria for mixed methods research; (2) overview the guidelines for intervention studies; (3) give a summary of guidelines and models for mixed methods research in such studies; (4) evaluate the mentioned guidelines, models, and quality criteria; (5) identify and describe the key elements of these guidelines, models, and quality criteria; and (6) develop a theoretical model for assessing the quality of mixed methods research designs used in intervention studies.

ABSTRACT We studied the participation of Brazilian journalism in the articulation of social representations and of cultural identities on the Brazilian and Uruguayan border based on the news narratives about Uruguay that frontier Brazilians and Uruguayans appropriated, made use of and considered relevant in their everyday lives. We conducted the study case from the perspective of British and Latin American social studies, using semi-structured interviews for questioning 12 frontier people. Uruguay was featured in newspaper discourse as a consumption proposal, a tourist destination, or a stand for its products and natural resources. The narrative news helped to reinforce the mutual identification of Uruguayans and Brazilians with respect to their belonging to the region and their life style.   KEYWORDS: Communication; Consumption; Frontiers; Uruguay; Brazil. Ecological management is gaining acceptance as an encompassing philosophy in forest resource management. In keeping with this new paradigm, the Canadian Standards Association is creating a forest certification process to ensure that forest products are generated through sustainable forestry. However, a great deal of research is needed to develop and assess soil indicators of ecological sustainability. This paper discusses the role and usefulness of microbial indicators of soil quality in the ecological management of forests and the forest certification process. Suitable microbial indicators of soil conservation should be closely linked to critical ecological processes, should be documented properly across various ecosystem types, should be easy to use, and must evolve with new scientific knowledge. Key words: ecological management, soil quality, criteria and indicators, Canadian Standards Association, soil microorganisms, fire
