This chapter presents a novel learning approach for studying ancient Bulgarian history, civilization, and their cultural heritage, namely the Thracian civilization, through storytelling and serious game combinations. The chapter also provides an overview of serious educational games, digital storytelling, and game development tools that can be used to present ancient history and their cultural heritage. The combination of storytelling and serious games successfully helps instructors to motivate student learning, stimulate their curiosity, and make them interested. The authors developed a game editor and a game portal that facilitated the game's development by applying game templates, layout styles, and question pools.

The concept and methods of user experience (UX) are gaining momentum in the game industry. Designers and educational practitioners aim to provide rich and effective user experience through serious educational games. Nevertheless several phenomena that delineate the complex issue of UX in serious gaming remain unexplored. This empirical study sheds light on temporality of UX and attractiveness of serious games. More specifically it explores a) how pragmatic and hedonic UX quality affects attractiveness in a serious game and b) investigates differences between anticipated and episodic UX so as to capture how the UX develops over time. Key findings are presented and discussed.

ABSTRACTThe introduction of new technologies in society has created a need for interactive contents that can make the most of the potential that technological advances offer. Serious games as educational games are such content: they can be defined as video games or interactive applications whose main purpose is to provide not only entertainment but also training and enhancing skills in areas such as health, marketing, education, etc. The game was associated with childhood and youth but serious games search for promoting, strengthening and giving added value to the teaching and learning process for all ages. One of the most crucial factors for successful educational games is their ability to maintain an individual learner’s motivation and interest by adapting the individual learning and gaming experience to each learner’s needs, preferences, goals, and abilities. For this reason, Serious Games need tutoring and dynamization. The aim of this paper is to analyze a specific experience success in the use of Serious Games for training. It details how this serious game can enhance different skills in each of the phases of the game. This Serious Game was used to promote innovation among High School students and students at Vocational Training Centres. The users must manage a supermarket trying to get the best results possible by taking a series of both strategic and operational decisions. Through an econometric regression model, we have analyzed the results of its use by a group of High School students and Vocational Training School students.RESUMENLos Serious Games son juegos cuyo fin va más allá del mero entretenimiento y persiguen transmitir contenidos, valores, potenciar habilidades y competencias e incluso servir como herramienta de marketing al utilizarse como medio publi-citario. En los últimos años, las TIC han ido tomando protagonismo en el ámbito educativo y formativo y los Serious Games están jugando un papel fundamental como herramientas formativas. El juego anteriormente se asociaba a las etapas de la infancia y la juventud pero los Serious Games pretenden potenciar, reforzar y dar un valor añadido importante al proceso de enseñanza y al proceso de aprendizaje para todas las edades. No obstante, para que los Serious Games alcancen todo su potencial como herramienta en el proceso de aprendizaje, es necesario complementarlos con una buena tutorización y dinami-zación que guíe dicho aprendizaje. Sin duda, sin la labor tutorial, los Serious Games pierden eficacia en su objetivo de poten-ciar el aprendizaje. El objeto de estudio del presente trabajo es analizar una experiencia de éxito concreta en el uso de los Serious Games para el ámbito formativo. En él se detalla cómo a través de un juego que se ha utilizado entre los alumnos de Bachillerato y Formación Profesional se pueden potenciar diferentes competencias en cada una de las fases del mismo. En él, el usuario debe gestionar un supermercado tratando de obtener los mejores resultados posibles tomando una serie de decisio-nes tanto estratégicas como operativas. Serious games, electronic games whose purpose is work educational elements, often do not reach this goal because by being included the content and teaching strategies, the fun’s dimension and motivation to interact are reduced. In this sense, this chapter presents a proposal for the use of immersion, narrative, and replayability as devices to make serious games more attractive to the student in general. These three elements are explored theoretically and then analyzed and aligned with proposals for instructional design and learning theories. As a result, a development proposal for Serious Game Development Document (SGDD) and a rubric for evaluation of use are presented. With this, it is expected to contribute and assist not only with development, but also with in the analysis of serious games.

As educational games become more pervasive, the evolution of game design software is inevitable. This study looked at student perceptions of teacher created Serious Educational Games as part of a project striving to create a game development software where teachers and students create games as part of educational activities. The objective was to use evidence from student perceptions to inform further development of the software. A mixed method design ascertained data from 181 male and 178 females from 33 teacher created games. Results indicate that the software is relatively effective by the supporting documentation and training lacked in several areas. This information led to the creation of a commercial game development software set for release in 2010.

BACKGROUND Serious educational games have shown effectiveness in improving various health outcomes. Previous reviews of health education games have focused on specific diseases, certain medical subjects, fixed target groups, or limited outcomes of interest. Given the recent surge in health game studies, a scoping review of health education games is needed to provide an updated overview of various aspects of such serious games. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to conduct a scoping review of the design and evaluation of serious educational games for health targeting health care providers, patients, and public (health) users. METHODS We identified 2313 studies using a unique combination of keywords in the PubMed and ScienceDirect databases. A total of 161 studies were included in this review after removing duplicates (n=55) and excluding studies not meeting our inclusion criteria (1917 based on title and abstract and 180 after reviewing the full text). The results were stratified based on games targeting health care providers, patients, and public users. RESULTS Most health education games were developed and evaluated in America (82/161, 50.9%) and Europe (64/161, 39.8%), with a considerable number of studies published after 2012. We discovered 58.4% (94/161) of studies aiming to improve knowledge learning and 41.6% (67/161) to enhance skill development. The studies targeted various categories of end users: health care providers (42/161, 26.1%), patients (38/161, 23.6%), public users (75/161, 46.6%), and a mix of users (6/161, 3.7%). Among games targeting patients, only 13% (6/44) targeted a specific disease, whereas a growing majority targeted lifestyle behaviors, social interactions, cognition, and generic health issues (eg, safety and nutrition). Among 101 studies reporting gameplay specifications, the most common gameplay duration was 30 to 45 min. Of the 61 studies reporting game repetition, only 14% (9/61) of the games allowed the users to play the game with unlimited repetitions. From 32 studies that measured follow-up duration after the game intervention, only 1 study reported a 2-year postintervention follow-up. More than 57.7% (93/161) of the games did not have a multidisciplinary team to design, develop, or assess the game. CONCLUSIONS Serious games are increasingly used for health education targeting a variety of end users. This study offers an updated scoping review of the studies assessing the value of serious games in improving health education. The results showed a promising trend in diversifying the application of health education games that go beyond a specific medical condition. However, our findings indicate the need for health education game development and adoption in developing countries and the need to focus on multidisciplinary teamwork in designing effective health education games. Furthermore, future health games should expand the duration and repetition of games and increase the length of the follow-up assessments to provide evidence on long-term effectiveness.

A field that was unheard of until Ben Sawyer referred to it as Serious Games in late 2002 (Sawyer, 2003) has already grown so large that one can only hope to keep track of a very small part of it. The time is rapidly coming to an end when literature surveys of even one branch of Serious Games can be considered comprehensive. This chapter will examine the current state of the part of the serious games discipline that intersects with formal education, with a particular focus on design. The chapter begins broadly by looking at games in order to define the term serious game but then narrows to a specific focus on games for education. In this way, it provides an educational context for games as learning objects, distinguishes between traditional, (i.e. non-digital; Murray, 1998) and digital games, and classifies games for education as a subcategory of serious games while at the same time still being part of a larger group of interactive digital applications.

Dyslexia is a cognitive disorder that affects the evolutionary ability to read, write, and speak in people, affecting the correct learning of a large percentage of the population worldwide. In fact, incorrect learning is caused because the educational system does not take into consideration the accessibility parameters that people with dyslexia need to maintain a sustainable educational level equal to others. Moreover, the use of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, has been deployed in education programs, offering many benefits; however, the lack of accessibility of those devices creates new barriers to students with dyslexia that hinder their education. With the aim of reducing these barriers, this paper presents an approach to the development of accessible serious games games for children with dyslexia. As a case study, a serious game based on a previously proposed serious game development method and a new set of accessibility guidelines for people with dyslexia is presented. The main purpose of the serious video game is to improve the treatment of dyslexia, through the collection of data obtained from two puzzles designed to train certain cognitive areas that affect this disability. This article has a double contribution: on the one hand, the guidelines and the method that can help video game developers and therapists to develop accessible serious games for people with dyslexia and, on the other hand, the two specific serious games that can be used by therapists, family members and people with dyslexia themselves.
