This article presents a thorough review of the literature dedicated to learning more about mixed methods research design. Explanatory sequential mixed methods studies and exploratory sequential mixed methods studies are the two types of mixed methods research design models that this article presents in detail. To contextualize different ideas related to research design, the author provides examples of research studies that exemplify different research designs falling within mixed methods. The main objective of this article is to highlight the important role that qualitative research design plays in mixed methods research. Such a presentation of the literature aims to argue that qualitative data substantiates quantitative data as a means to heighten the regard to which qualitative methodology receives.

This article outlines the rationale for adopting a mixed methods approach within randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and explores challenges associated in doing so. Taking the example of the EASE Back feasibility and pilot study ( Evaluating Acupuncture and Standard care for pregnant wom En with BACK pain: ISRCTN49955124), we detail why and how we operationalized a concurrent-sequential mixed methods research design. We present key findings from the exploratory research (focus groups and interviews) and explain how these were integrated with descriptive findings (a national survey of physical therapists) in order to inform and refine the design of the explanatory phase (the pilot RCT). We conclude with a discussion of lessons learned and implications for future research design and conduct.

Many research problems in social science involve multilevel phenomena. However, discussions about multilevel research designs are limited in the mixed methods (MM) literature. Building on early writings in the field, this methodological discussion advances a refined definition of a multilevel MM research design. The refinement emerges from a review of qualitative and quantitative conceptions of multilevel research designs and an analysis of a literature-based definition of a multilevel MM research design. To illustrate the application of the refined definition, we present an exemplar of a multilevel MM study aimed at explaining cultural, behavioral, and neurobiological aspects of literacy for mathematics. This comprehensive and versatile definition advances the field by offering guidance for designing and conducting innovative multilevel MM studies.

The aim of this mixed methods research was to distinguish and to examine models of organisational climate regarding the work-related learning of employees. The theoretical rationale is found in the reflections of the learning supportive organisational climate as the main prerequisite of the process of participatory planning in adult education and learning, and as one of the core pillars in the process of building a learning organisation. For the purposes of triangulation and of complementarity, we adopted quantitative and qualitative methodology. The research was performed online from May to December 2018 and included employees from different companies in the Republic of Serbia. By using an explanatory sequential mixed methods research design with nested samples for the quantitative (Nqn=687) and the qualitative components (Nql=85), three models of organisational climate regarding the work-related learning of employees have been distinguished: the organisational climate of the fear of repression, the service-oriented organisational climate, and the learning supportive organisational climate.

Since it is believed that individuals with higher-order thinking skills are more welcomed in educational and vocational contexts, teaching them has become a desirable goal in education. For that reason, this study aimed at improving the students’ higher-order thinking skills by incorporating debate in inquiry-based teaching. The study used mixed-methods research design utilizing pre-test and post-test to collect quantitative data and observation checklist to collect qualitative data. The quantitative data were analyzed using a rubrics, while the qualitative data were analyzed using a checklist. The study revealed that the students’ higher-order thinking skills at all levels improved after the treatment. The improvement at Analyze level could be seen from the students’ better organization of information, at Evaluate level, the students showed improvement in seeing problems from various perspectives and at Create level, the students improved in communicating solutions better. Other than that, the improvement was also observed in terms of the students’ speaking ability.

Abstract The introduction of the Airbus A350-900 (A359) and the Boeing B787-9 (B789) have enabled airlines to operate ultra-long-range services. Using a mixed methods research design, this study has examined the air cargo-carrying potential of Singapore Airlines Airbus A350-900XWB (A359) and United Airlines Boeing B787-9 (789) aircraft on their ultra-long-haul San Francisco to Singapore and the Singapore to San Francisco air routes. The qualitative data was analysed using document analysis, and the air cargo payload was modelled by simulation. The air cargo-carrying potential of the two aircraft types was significantly influenced by enroute weather. In the event of eastbound winds, the Singapore Airlines Airbus A350-900XWB air cargo payload was 16.9 tonnes and the United Airlines Boeing 787-9 was 11.5 tonnes, when these flights had a full passenger payload. In the case of westbound winds with a full passenger payload, the Singapore Airlines Airbus A350-900XWB air cargo payload was 13.1 tonnes and the United Airlines Boeing 787-9 was 7.9 tonnes. When there were no winds on the air routes, the Singapore Airlines Airbus A350-900XWB offered 15.0 tonnes and the United Airline Boeing 787-9 offered 9.7 tonnes of air cargo payload, respectively.

In order to enhance core mixed methods research designs, social scientists need an approach that incorporates developments in the social constructionist perspective. This work describes a study that aimed to promote occupational well-being in hospital departments where employees are at risk of burnout, based on a constructionist inquiry developed starting from the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Taking this study as an example, we define a “generative sequential mixed methods approach” as a process that involves consulting quantitative studies to identify criticalities on which to conduct focused, transformative investigations. The article contributes by envisaging ways to mix qualitative and quantitative methods that consider a “generative” and “future-forming” orientation to research, in line with recent shifts in social psychology.
