Adaptation and Evolution Frameworks for Service Based Inter-Organizational Workflows

This paper describes pattern-based frameworks for adaptation and evolution of service-based workflow process models meeting specific cooperation patterns widely recognized in the B2B area. In the authors' previous works, they focused on restructuring and interconnecting workflows using the SOA paradigm so as to deal with more flexible inter-organizational workflow (IOWF) models. The main issue of this paper is the question of flexibility of IOWF process models where the authors distinguish two main aspects: adaptability and evolutivity affecting different levels of the IOWF process. For that, they define three categories of adptation called functional, behavioral and interactional adaptations and two categories of evolution called functional evolution and organizational evolution; then, they conceptualize some adaptation and evolution patterns which can be applied on the IOWF process models. The authors' adaptation and evolution frameworks are developed according to the MVC pattern and operate on process models specified with BPEL. Thanks to their high modularity, the frameworks are easily extensible and allow the reusing of patterns to implement other ones.

This chapter provides a formal specification of non-atomic, relaxed action refinement suited for component-based business process engineering. Engineering a business process involves multiple process models created by different people on different levels of abstractions. Keeping the models consistent during the engineering procedure—refinement validation—is one objective of this chapter. In component-based software engineering, the lowest abstraction of a business process is mapped on existing components that have a description of their behaviors. Checking the consistency of process and component behavior—grounding validation—is the second objective. Both refinement and grounding validation increase the robustness of business process implementations and the productivity of process engineers. Technically, the specification given in this chapter is in terms of deadlock analysis in safe Petri nets. The evaluation of this straight-forward implementation underlines the exponential complexity of deadlock analysis in safe Petri nets. For use cases with more than 30 activities per process or heavy parallelism, optimized implementations are needed.

The article investigates the multi-functional status of the French connective donc (‘so’) showing on the basis of a corpus analysis that the connective may be used to structure the discourse at different levels. The study distinguishes four main functions for donc: consequential, recapitulating, reformulating, and discursive. In the discourse situation, donc may acquire properly discursive functions reaching beyond its primary consequential function. This functional evolution partially parallels a loss of the specific semantico-syntactic features of consequential donc.

Intentions play a key role in information systems engineering. Research on process modeling has highlighted that specifying intentions can expressly mitigate many problems encountered in process modeling as lack of flexibility or adaptation. Process mining approaches mine processes in terms of tasks and branching. To identify and formalize intentions from event logs, this work presents a novel approach of process mining, called Map Miner Method (MMM). This method automates the construction of intentional process models from event logs. First, MMM estimates users' strategies (i.e., the different ways to fulfill the intentions) in terms of their activities. These estimated strategies are then used to infer users' intentions at different levels of abstraction using two tailored algorithms. MMM constructs intentional process models with respect to the Map metamodel formalism. MMM is applied on a real-world dataset, i.e. event logs of developers of Eclipse UDC (Usage Data Collector). The resulting Map process model provides a precious understanding of the processes followed by the developers, and also provide feedback on the effectiveness and demonstrate scalability of MMM.

In analogy to factorial experimental design, I advocate for factorial model comparison.

Recently we have been investigating a class of nickel-base superalloys which possess substantial room temperature ductility. This improvement in ductility is directly related to improvements in grain boundary strength due to increased boundary cohesion through control of detrimental impurities and improved boundary shear strength by controlled grain boundary micros true tures.For these investigations an experimental nickel-base superalloy was doped with different levels of sulphur impurity. The micros tructure after a heat treatment of 1360°C for 2 hr, 1200°C for 16 hr consists of coherent precipitates of γ’ Ni3(Al,X) in a nickel solid solution matrix.

Some authors using immunofluorescent techniques had already suggested that some hepatocytes are able to synthetize several plasma proteins. In vitro studies on normal cells or on cells issued of murine hepatomas raise the same conclusion. These works could be indications of an hepatocyte functionnal non-specialization, meanwhile the authors never give direct topographic proofs suitable with this hypothesis.The use of immunoenzymatic techniques after obtention of monospecific antisera had seemed to us useful to bring forward a better knowledge of this problem. We have studied three carrier proteins (transferrin = Tf, hemopexin = Hx, albumin = Alb) operating at different levels in iron metabolism by demonstrating and localizing the adult rat hepatocytes involved in their synthesis.Immunological, histological and ultrastructural methods have been described in a previous work.

This paper presents four domains of markers that have been found to predict later cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative disease. These four domains are (1) data patterns of memory performance, (2) cardiovascular factors, (3) genetic markers, and (4) brain activity. The critical features of each domain are illustrated with data from the longitudinal Betula Study on memory, aging, and health ( Nilsson et al., 1997 ; Nilsson et al., 2004 ). Up to now, early signs regarding these domains have been examined one by one and it has been found that they are associated with later cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative disease. However, it was also found that each marker accounts for only a very small part of the total variance, implying that single markers should not be used as predictors for cognitive decline or neurodegenerative disease. It is discussed whether modeling and simulations should be used as tools to combine markers at different levels to increase the amount of explained variance.

In the IRT person-fluctuation model, the individual trait levels fluctuate within a single test administration whereas the items have fixed locations. This article studies the relations between the person and item parameters of this model and two central properties of item and test scores: temporal stability and external validity. For temporal stability, formulas are derived for predicting and interpreting item response changes in a test-retest situation on the basis of the individual fluctuations. As for validity, formulas are derived for obtaining disattenuated estimates and for predicting changes in validity in groups with different levels of fluctuation. These latter formulas are related to previous research in the person-fit domain. The results obtained and the relations discussed are illustrated with an empirical example.
