Should We Program Robotic Emotions from the Gender Perspective?

Scientific research on robotic emotions has been increasingly developing for the last few years. It is presumed that in twenty five years’ time there will be robots with emotions capable of taking decisions. Therefore, it is important to determine if people should take into account gender when designing the development of this kind of robotic emotions. Moreover, the authors assume that nowadays there is no intelligence without emotions, which are the ones that ultimately help taking decisions. It is contended here that the emotional elements and features of human reasoning should be taken into account when designing the personality of robots. As has been shown in the last few years, the concept of gender is constructed by socio-cultural factors. Gender perspectives are increasingly being applied to different fields of knowledge. Indeed, and as recent feminist research has highlighted, technology is affected by gender relations. Technology in general has been traditionally considered as a sign of men’s power and masculinity defined in terms of technological capabilities. Nevertheless, current discourses have provided new definitions of technology, of gender identity and of what being human means. In the same way, definitions of gender also change with time, affected by technological developments. The present work aims at demonstrating that the gender perspective is indeed very useful when applied to the field of robotics. Specifically, and when dealing with complex decision-taking, it becomes necessary to analyse which managing activities women can better develop in order to apply them, together with other features, to the design of robotic emotions. The purpose is, then, to propose a robotic model that, after the inclusion of such emotional aspects, breaks with old constrained gender stereotypes and takes a rather liberating view. At the same time, such a proposal should enable researchers to get better results when creating robots capable of managing other robotic teams and taking complex decisions. In short, the authors seek to apply the gender perspective in the analysis of some emotional features to be taken into account before they are applied to the field of robotics.

How can power and gender perspectives on using ICT in kindergartens be addressed and understood? This article tries to answer this question by analyzing two cases from Norwegian kindergartens. The writer uses aspects on power from Machiavelli, Weber and Foucault, and recent research on ICT and gender. Machiavellian strategies on being sly rather than fierce were pointed out in both cases and some gender stereotypes as well. Addressing gender-equality issues in education can foster enormous change in children’s lives. However, most textbooks in Albanian schools include gender stereotypes, which perpetuate gender inequality and unequal roles for men and women, both in public and private spheres. This research aims to identify and evaluate trends of gender stereotypes in textbooks, as well as the need for gender mainstreaming in basic education curriculum. The methodology is based on a desk review of textbooks from a gender perspective. The curriculum evaluation follows the context, input, process, and product (CIPP) model of evaluation, which mainly aims to assess the extent to which a certain education reform has generated positive change in schools.

Abstract Introduction An individual’s culture presents unique risk and protective factors related to sleep outcomes. Similarly, emerging adulthood also represents a unique developmental period as it relates to sleep. The study of cultural factors during emerging adulthood is critical for better understanding the development of sleep dysfunction in vulnerable segments of the population. The present study investigated the association between perceived discrimination and insomnia symptoms in Latinx emerging adults. We hypothesized that perceived discrimination would result in higher insomnia symptom presentation above and beyond anxiety and depressive symptoms. Methods Participants included 198 (73.7% female; mean age=18.96) college-aged individuals self-identifying as Hispanic/Latinx who completed an online survey that assessed perceived racial/ethnic discrimination (Everyday Discrimination Scale; EDS), anxiety symptoms (General Anxiety Disorder Scale; GAD-7), depression symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire; PHQ-9), and insomnia symptoms (Insomnia Severity Index; ISI). A three-block hierarchical regression was used to assess the impact of perceived discrimination on the presentation of insomnia symptomology above and beyond demographic characteristics and anxiety and depressive symptoms. Results The final model significantly predicted insomnia symptom presentation, F(5, 191)=26.379, p<.001, R2=.408. When age and gender identity were entered into the model they did not significantly predict insomnia symptoms F(2, 194)=.199, p=.82, R2=.002. Blocks 2, anxiety and depression symptoms (∆R2=.388), and 3, perceived discrimination (∆R2=.018), accounted for significant change in variance. In the final model, perceived discrimination significantly predicted insomnia symptoms (β=.151) above and beyond age (β=.016), gender identity (β= -.085), anxiety (β= -.075), and depression (β=.621). Conclusion Results suggest that discrimination among Hispanic/Latinx emerging adults is a unique contributor that may explain some of the higher prevalence rates of insomnia symptomology in this segment of the population. As such, it would be beneficial to tailor existing approaches aimed at improving sleep outcomes by accounting for stressors that could result from or influence discrimination against the individual and incorporate other cultural factors into treatment protocols. During recent decades there has been an extensive progress towards several Artificial Intelligence (AI) concepts, such as that of intelligent agent. Meanwhile, it has been established that emotions play a crucial role concerning human reasoning and learning. Thus, developing an intelligent agent able to recognize and express emotions has been considered an enormous challenge for AI researchers. Embedding a computational model of emotions in intelligent agents can be beneficial in a variety of domains, including e-learning applications. However, until recently emotional aspects of human learning were not taken into account when designing e-learning platforms. Various issues arise when considering the development of affective agents in e-learning environments, such as issues relating to agents’ appearance, as well as ways for those agents to recognize learners’ emotions and express emotional support. Embodied conversational agents (ECAs) with empathetic behaviour have been suggested to be one effective way for those agents to provide emotional feedback to learners’ emotions. There has been some valuable research towards this direction, but a lot of work still needs to be done to advance scientific knowledge.

This introductory chapter provides an overview of Pedro Almodóvar's Talk to Her (2002). The film offers much, both in terms of thematic analysis and micro analysis of the sound, performance, cinematography, editing, and mise-en-scène. Almodóvar can be considered to be a director who is a specialist in gender and the issue of gender identity is explored in Talk to Her, particularly the notion that gender characteristics are fluid and not fixed. Almodóvar's characters simultaneously embody and reject gender stereotypes and share both feminine and masculine attributes. Most of all, what makes Talk to Her such an interesting film to dissect, is the uneasy position that Almodóvar places the spectator in and how its messages and values create moral ambiguity. The film delivers morally complex, hazy messages about rape, voyeurism, and obsession and consequently, the spectator finds humour where they should find revulsion and sympathy where they should find anger. As a result, the film has sparked a great deal of critical, theoretical, and philosophical analysis, particularly around the issue of rape.

Abstract: This chapter reviews the diagnosis, preparation, and treatment options for giant middle cerebral artery aneurysms. Despite advancements in the techniques of microneurosurgery and the rapid technological developments in the field of neuroendovascular surgery, giant aneurysms of the middle cerebral artery remain a persistent management challenge. Due to the involvement and relation of multiple branching arteries, endovascular treatment options are often limited. The surgeon and surgical team must be well versed in the techniques of complex clip reconstruction as well as a number of possible variations of bypass options. In addition, they must be prepared with contingency plans for the varying intraoperative and postoperative complications that can occur. These larger aneurysms require both more complex decision-making and higher technical skills to treat successfully.

TV serials analyzed in this paper show a representation of stereotyped gender. These cultural products, despite its apparent modernity, reproduce inequalities in the representation of the feminine and masculine through gender stereotypes which are sexist models for the construction of gender identity among its young viewers. Besides, a gender and co-education approach for an audiovisual alphabetization should be a good way against inequality. Se analizan en este trabajo un conjunto de series de televisión que plantean una representación estereotípica de los géneros. Pese a su aparente modernidad, múltiples productos culturales-televisivos siguen siendo portadores de discursos que reproducen la desigualdad en la representación de lo femenino y lo masculino, a través de estereotipos de género que actúan como modelos de desigualdad para la construcción de identidad de sus jóvenes espectadores. Frente a ellas, una alfabetización audiovisual, desde un enfoque coeducativo, podría ser un buen instrumento contra la desigualdad.

Karl Barth’s gender perspective is often analysed with reference to his so-called “theoethics” or “creational theology”. This perspective perpetuates an asymmetry in gender relations that was prevalent in Biblical times, throughout Christianity and to some extent still is visible today. He based his view on the subordination of women on an exegesis of Genesis 1:27 as “intertext” of Ephesians 5:22-23. Barth’s asymmetrical gender perspective is a product of his embedment in Western Christian tradition which in turn, is rooted in early Christian patriarchal theology. The aim of this article is to focus on Barth’s ontological reframing of the traditional understanding of the Biblical notion of human beings as created in the “image of God”. The article consists of four sections: (a) Luther’s and Calvin’s gender perspectives; (b) the Enlightenment failure to achieve emancipation; (c) gender disparity in Reformed theology; and (d) a feminist alternative.
