A Knowledge-Based User Interface to Optimize Curriculum Utility in an E-Learning System

The Internet and the World Wide Web in particular provide a unique platform to connect learners with educational resources. Educational material in hypermedia formed in a Web-based educational system makes learning a task-driven process, motivating learners to explore alternative navigational paths through the domain knowledge and from different resources around the globe. Many researchers have focused on developing e-learning systems with personalized learning mechanisms to assist on-line Web-based learning and to adaptively provide learning paths. Although most personalized systems consider learner preferences, interests and browsing behaviors when providing personalized curriculum sequencing services, these systems usually neglect to consider whether learner ability and the difficulty level of the recommended curriculums are matched to each other. Therefore, the authors proposed approach is based on an integer program (IP) to optimize user curriculum accompanying with fuzzy logic approach which analyze the effective criteria by linguistic variables in a knowledge based system. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is shown by numerical illustrations which are inferenced from the designed user interface.

The Chinese government is pursuing e-learning policies which makes job-training with a knowledge-based society. To explain more fully the important role of the e-learning environment, this article undertakes some typical examples of the governments' job-training under e-learning environment. The main problems in servants' job-training in China are the low quantity in the servants' training, short of restriction, the uniform manner in the training and less fairness and availability of opportunities for educational training. In order to develop the e-learning system, the civil servant's job training policies are provided and the measures of the effective e-learning system are designed.

Existing virtual learning environments (VLEs) in educational institutions are not designed with the expectation that students with disabilities will use them. Consequently, retrieving relevant information by some students with disabilities is a challenging task. The focus of this study was to propose the design of VLEs to incorporate ontologies that facilitate information retrieval by students with disabilities in their learning, thus serving as a semantic web-based assistive technology in education. An Ontology-Driven Disability-Aware Personalised E-Learning System (ONTODAPS) was designed and then used to recommend specific learning materials to learners based on their learning goal and disability type. Preliminary results of the evaluation of ONTODAPS, by 30 students with disabilities, indicate that 70% of the participants found ONTODAPS to offer a better personalisation, better access to learning materials (68%) and is easier to use (63%) in retrieving learning materials than Sakai. Thus ONTODAPS serves as an assistive tool in their education through retrieval of relevant learning materials in a suitable format which is compatible with their disability.

In this Internet era, with ever-increasing interactions among participants, the size of the data is increasing so rapidly such that the information available to us in the near future is going to be unpredictable. Modeling and visualizing such data are one of the challenging tasks in the data analytics field. Therefore, business intelligence is the way in which a company can use data to improve business and operational efficiency whereas data analytics involves improving ways of making intelligence out of that data before acting on it. Thus, the proposed work focuses on prevailing challenges in data analytics and its application on social media like Facebook, Twitter, blogs, e-commerce, e-service and so on. Among all of the possible interactions, e-commerce, e-education, and e-services have been identified as important domains for analytics techniques. So, it focuses on machine learning technique in improving practice and research in such e-X domains. Empirical analysis is done to show the performance of proposed system using real-time datasets.

Many projects fail due to lack of product development to meet customer needs, leading to a waste of organizational resources and non systematic creation of products. Understanding user behavior and the effective management are key elements in the competitive knowledge-based economy. One of the outlets for knowledge-based economy is e-learning, facilitating education using information technology (IT) infrastructure, which plays an important role in today’s virtual world breaking distance and time obstacles. The purpose of this study is to probe e-learning users’ satisfaction attributes having noticeable impacts on enhancing instruction paradigm. Therefore, using two concepts of asynchronous learning and KANO model, the authors conduct a survey on user satisfaction in e-learning educational centers in Iran via interviews. Five satisfaction factors are pedagogical regulation, user characteristics, user interface, ICT infrastructures, group interactivity, and content. A questionnaire is proposed based on KANO concept and samples are collected. The statistical analyses are worked out on questionnaires applying Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software package. The results show that group interaction and user interface have high satisfaction level while content and infrastructures are the effective factors of dissatisfaction.

In the past decades, the Internet has evolved so rapidly that it makes the information-technology industry grow extremely fast. Internet-based applications such as e-commerce, e-payment, e-billing, e-learning, and so forth have tremendous influence on society: There is a trend that our society will be reshaped by the Internet. Among these applications, e-learning is one of the killer applications. Currently, the traditional education system faces some challenges that arose from the development of the knowledge-based economy. School enrollment increases with the population growth, education levels also increase for the new economy, and the cost of higher education escalates. On the other hand, in the workforce-training market, as the information economy develops, the demand for skilled workers increases. As the technology keeps changing, the workforce needs continuous training to maintain its productivity level. Hence, both formal school-based education and continuous workforce training have become big business now, and they will be even bigger in the future (Kerrey & Isakson, 2000). A more sophisticated education model is required to take this challenge, and so e-learning came into being. Compared to traditional classroom teaching, e-learning provides one major advantage: It makes the access of information much easier and more convenient. Hence, it makes learning of all kinds, at all levels, anytime, anyplace, at any pace a practical reality (Kolar, 2001). E-learning also gives tremendous cost savings for both instructors and learners; the learning model is shifted from instructor centered to learner centered, which focuses primarily on the needs of learners. The updating of online material is also much easier. Many e-learning systems can develop personalized and interactive applications that allow users to customize their e-learning models to their own pace, and they can truly engage the user in that they involve the simulation of real-world events and sophisticated collaboration with other learners and instructors (Quah & Chen, 2002). In our e-learning system, we incorporated mobile-agent technology to enhance the response time of information retrieval. The purpose of this incorporation is to overcome the bottleneck problem faced by many pure client-server-based systems. Since mobile agents are able to traverse from one information server to another autonomously to search for relevant documents for users, only relevant articles are sent back. This saves bandwidth and enhances the efficiency of the e-learning system. As a result, the turnaround time for user queries or information searches reduces, and the feedback from the user community is positive as the response time is shorter and users find it easier to maintain their trains of thought in their study.

To cope with the increasing trend of learning demand and limited resources, most universities are taking advantage of Web-based technology for their distance education or e-learning (Montelpare & Williams, 2000). One of the reasons is due to the significant price drop of personal computers in recent decades; the Internet and multimedia have penetrated into most households. Moreover, most students prefer to learn from an interactive environment through a self-paced style. Under the Web-based learning model, students can learn anytime, anywhere because they are not required to go to school on schedule (Appelt, 1997). Meanwhile, universities also enjoy the economic benefit due to the large student base that can share the development cost of course materials and other operational expenses. Gradually, more and more universities follow this similar way to provide online education.

Higher education and professional trainings often apply innovative e-learning systems, where ontologies are used for structuring domain knowledge. To provide up-to-date knowledge for the students, ontology has to be maintained regularly. It is especially true for IT audit and security domain, because technology is changing fast. However manual ontology population and enrichment is a complex task that require professional experience involving a lot of efforts. The authors' paper deals with the challenges and possible solutions for semi-automatic ontology enrichment and population. ProMine has two main contributions; one is the semantic-based text mining approach for automatically identifying domain-specific knowledge elements; the other is the automatic categorization of these extracted knowledge elements by using Wiktionary. ProMine ontology enrichment solution was applied in IT audit domain of an e-learning system. After ten cycles of the application ProMine, the number of automatically identified new concepts are tripled and ProMine categorized new concepts with high precision and recall.

The quality of the distance learning courses is largely influenced by competently prepared educational resources and an effective study support system. One of the possible ways to improve distance learning infrastructure and increase its effectiveness is to extend the architecture of present e‐learning systems by the components for adaptable and sustainable learning. This research work is devoted to developing the service‐oriented distance learning environment adaptable to the user's needs. The proposed adaptable communication environment of distance learning is constructed by integration of new components of communication scenarios generation, adaptable for student's goals, multilayered domain ontology of learning subject and forming intelligent agents’ framework possible. The paper presents the knowledge‐based component architecture of the distance learning system, which enables a better adaptation of learning resources to students. The paper analyses the possibilities of integrating ontology into the e‐learning system. The issues of decomposing ontology into different levels of understanding are discussed in order to adapt to learner's tasks and goals. A conceptual approach is proposed for extending the existing distance learning system architecture by intelligent and deeper knowledge layers. Santrauka Nuotolinių studijų kokybė daugiausia priklauso nuo kompetentingai parengtų mokomųjų priemonių ir veiksmingai veikiančios studijų paramos sistemos. Ieškant priemonių, kaip pagerinti nuotolinių studijų sistemos infrastruktūrą ir padidinti jos darbo efektyvumą, nagrinėjamos galimybės praplėsti tradicinės nuotolinio mokymo sistemos architektūrą komponentėmis, kurios leistų išplėtoti adaptuotą ir darnų mokymosi procesą. Šio tyrimo uždaviniai skirti paslaugoms, skirtoms išvystyti nuotolinio mokymo aplinką. Siekiant sukurti tinkamą kompiuterizuotą bendradarbiavimo aplinką, lanksčiai prisitaikoma prie kintančių vartotojo poreikių studijų procese. Architektūra projektuojama integruojant naujas komponentes bendravimo scenarijams generuoti, daugelio lygių dalykinės srities ontologijai naudoti ir sudarant sąlygas automatizuotam intelektinių agentų bendravimui. Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos galimybės integruoti dalykinės srities ontologiją į tradicinės nuotolinio mokymo sistemos aplinką. Ontologijos detalizavimo pagal studento supratimo lygmenis klausimai nagrinėjami siekiant pateikti koncepcinį tokios nuotolinės adaptuotos sistemos darbo modelį.

This paper introduces a Web-based tutoring system for computer programming that provides an integrated environment for web programming. The proposed system is web-based. It provides an online editor for writing, editing, updating, and executing programming code, so the students can execute examples and practical exercises online, it can help a student navigate through the online course materials, recommend learning goals, and generate appropriate reading sequences.. In addition, it provides auto complete and syntax highlighting in editing code, which could help students to remember the syntax more easily. The proposed system provides communication and interactive forum among students and teachers. And it provides the teachers with an online exam system. It monitors, collects and keeps information about students performance and activities. Therefore, teachers can use the recorded information to keep tracking of the students progress.
