The continuous development of energy management systems, coupled with a growing population, and increasing energy consumption, highlights the necessity to develop a deep understanding of household energy consumption behavior and interventions that facilitate behavioral change. Using a data mining segmentation technique, 2,505 Northern Ireland households were segmented into four distinctive profiles, based on their energy consumption patterns, socio-demographic, and dwelling characteristics. The change in attitude towards energy consumption behavior was analyzed to evaluate the impact of smart meter feedback as well. The key finding was 81% of trial participants perceived smart meters to be helpful in reducing their energy consumption. In addition, we found that the potential to reduce energy bills and environmental concerns were the strongest motivations for behavior change.

This paper presents a research on electric power monitoring prototype mobile applications development on energy consumptions in a university campus. Electric power energy consumptions always are the issue of monitoring usage especially in a broad environment. University campus faces high used of electric power, thus crucial analysis on cause of the usage is needed. This research aims to analyses electric power usage in a university campus where implemented of few smart meters is installed to monitor five main buildings in a campus university. A Monitoring system is established in collecting electric power usage from the smart meters. Data from the smart meter then is analyzed based on energy consume on 5 buildings. Results presents graph on the power energy consume and presented on mobile applications using Live Code coding. The methodology involved the setup of the smart meters, monitoring and data collected from main smart meters, analyzed electrical consumptions for 5 buildings and mobile system development to monitor. A Live Code mobile app is designed then data collected from smart meter using ION software is published in graphs. Results presents the energy consumed for 5 building during day and night. Details on maximum and minimum energy consumption presented that show load of energy used in the campus. Result present Tower 1 saved most eenergy at night which is 65% compared to block 3 which is 8% saved energy although block 3 presents the lowest energy consumption in the working hours and non-working hours. This project is significant that can help campus facility to monitor electric power used thus able to control possible results in future implementations.

Manual home energy meter reading and billing had caused inconvenience to the utility companies due to lack of manpower to read the energy meter at each household especially in the remote area, explains the increasing number of smart meter reader in the current market. Most of the smart meters in the market do not offer safety of privacy of consumers’ personal information since the data of electricity usage is being transferred digitally to the utility companies for more accurate bills calculation. Plus, the smart meter system is also a bit pricey to be installed in the rural area. Therefore, a private system that able to read energy consumption from a DC load and calculate its bill according to the tariff is proposed. Value of current is being obtained by using ACS712 current sensor. Hall circuit in the current sensor will converts magnetic field into a proportional voltage. The proposed system allows energy meter monitoring from an Android-based smartphone by displaying the real-time energy consumption and bill on Blynk application. An interface of Blynk is developed and connected to WiFi module, ESP8266 for visualizing the energy consumption of the DC load. In conclusion, the Energy Meter transmitter part able to read, calculate and transmit value of energy consumption and current bills to the Blynk application and Blynk application able to receive and show all the data transmitted at the present time. This system will be further improved for long-distance monitoring of electrical appliances used at home.

This study examines the impact of economic globalization on the patterns of energy consumption for 24 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) economies from 1995 to 2015. We employ Westerlund cointegration, which shows a long-run association between economic globalization and energy consumption patterns. Furthermore, cross-sectional autoregressive distributed lag models (CS-ARDL) results explain the short-run and long-run relationship between the series. The results further explain that economic globalization reduces oil and coal consumption while accelerating gas consumption in OECD economies. We additionally employ the Eberhardt augmented mean group test to verify consistency with CS-ARDL results. The empirical evidence of this study suggests that OECD economies’ policymakers should prioritize economic globalization in framing policies related to energy consumption. Furthermore, allocating funds for better technology related to high polluting fuels should be one of the crucial considerations arising from this study. Finally, we recommend economic globalization as an important indicator to address the issues related to OECD economics’ environmental and ecological footprints.

In this paper is provided a systematic, in-depth, behavioral analysis of renewable energy sources cooperatives’ members. The analysis proved that in, on hand, there was a noticeable difference in the portion of affection of each proposed intervention on the actual energy consumption, which may be to even ten times more in some cases, and on the other hand, the difference in energy consumption between the analyzed groups was noticeable as well. So, implementing energy efficiency interventions of various types, such as technical support, special tariffs, energy generation schemes, and smart meters, seems to lead to substantial energy reductions to even more than 10%, cumulatively, and reduces the environmental footprint. Additionally, the majority of energy efficiency interventions applied by the renewable energy sources cooperatives are proved to be effective in achieving their primary goal, sensitizing members, and leading them to a more efficient energy consumption behavior (“greener”). The results of the analysis showed that each proposed intervention had played a different but nonetheless significant role in the diminishing of the energy consumption of the members and that there was a noticeable difference in energy consumption between the analyzed groups. The results of the analysis demonstrated more than 22 GWh totally in green consumption, and almost 4500 tons of CO2 saved.

Purpose Limitations of producing energy and the increasing demands in the electricity market in Iran have not only drawn the attention of authorities in the energy industry toward optimization of energy consumption, but also created marketing approaches toward these objectives. In this respect, it is important and even necessary to modify energy consumption behaviors. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of the criteria of an effective Internet advertisement for modification of energy consumption. Design/methodology/approach To provide a detailed understanding of customers’ perceptions of energy consumption advertising, a survey study was conducted. The research model is first validated and the formulated hypotheses are tested using the structural equation model (SEM). Findings The results showed that the audience’s attention, interest and desire for a piece of advertisement can predict their consumption behavior. Originality/value This study is one of the pioneer studies that highlights the importance of advertising toward modification of energy consumption. It seems that, the identification of the causal relations among attention, interest, desire and action, has not yet been clearly validated in the previous literature. This research contributes to the literature by developing and testing a comprehensive research model using SEM. So, the current paper offers vital guidelines to social marketers who are planning to modify energy consumption.

The demand for energy in continues to grow. This projected growth in demand has spurned several initiatives aimed at forestalling potential shortages. The focus is on influencing the energy consumption patterns in industry especially during peak demand times when energy supply systems are strained. Moreover, the modern society has become more sensitive to the impact on the environment. More consumers are aware today of the need to conserve energy. A typical platform will enable industry to reduce electricity usage. The ability to manage energy usage more effectively saves businesses. To ensure the provision of adequate, secure and cost-effective energy supplies, resources using the latest cost options are being utilized. To promote the efficient utilization of energy and discourage wasteful and non-productive patterns of energy consumption, the energy policy's approach is to rely heavily on industry to exercise efficiency in energy conversion, utilization and consumption through the implementation of awareness programs. This research will encourage engineers in industry to evaluate, investigate, discover and discuss the various opportunities available to manage energy in industry utilizing a well-structured and engineered methodology and to consider energy management initiatives seriously.

The climate is changing very fast today, and this is not natural. We are experiencing the impact of climate change in many aspects. It is also expected to impact the performance of buildings badly in due course of time. In recent years, many countries started investing to evaluate the energy performances of the buildings and opting for the best suited energy-saving measures. However, this concept may be new in the context of Bhutan. However, the author expects that this new concept may revolutionize the building construction sectors in Bhutan. Many studies show that buildings are one of the world’s largest consumers of energy, and on the other hand, strategies are available to reduce energy consumption. The strategies can be applied right from the design phases for the new buildings and retrofits for the old buildings. In order to apply the best strategies of energy consumption reduction and to understand building energy consumption patterns, an evaluation of the building’s energy performance needs to be carried out.

The key advantage of smart meters over rotating-disc meters is their ability to transmit electric energy consumption data to power utilities’ remote data centers. Besides enabling the automated collection of consumers’ electric energy consumption data for billing purposes, data gathered by smart meters and analyzed through Artificial Intelligence (AI) make the realization of consumer-centric use cases possible. A smart meter installed in a domestic sector of an electrical grid and used for the realization of consumer-centric use cases is located at the entry point of a household/building’s electrical grid connection and can gather composite/circuit-level electric energy consumption data. However, it is not able to decompose its measured circuit-level electric energy consumption into appliance-level electric energy consumption. In this research, we present an AI model, a neuro-fuzzy classifier integrated with partitional clustering and metaheuristically optimized through parallel-computing-accelerated evolutionary computing, that performs energy decomposition on smart meter data in residential demand-side management, where a publicly available UK-DALE (UK Domestic Appliance-Level Electricity) dataset is used to experimentally test the presented model to classify the On/Off status of monitored electrical appliances. As shown in this research, the presented AI model is effective at providing energy decomposition for domestic consumers. Further, energy decomposition can be provided for industrial as well as commercial consumers.

Smart meter technology installation as a potent means of energy management is a nascent and evolving phenomenon in most developing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. The ascendency is exponentially provoking migration from hugely unmetered electricity consumers in favour of smart meter technology. For policymakers to formulate actionable and effective energy policies, a deeper understanding of factors that culture users’ interest in smart meter technology is necessary. Despite the imperativeness of consumers’ viewpoints in policy-design, little contemporary insights still exit regarding those antecedents that propel electricity consumers to switch to smart meter. Accordingly, this study examines determinants of smart meter and their potential influence on sustainable energy consumption behavior among residents in under-reported sub-urban areas in Nigeria. The drivers were employed to extend the Theory of Planned Behavior. One hundred and fifty copies of self-administered questionnaire serve as data collection instrument from participants. Structural equation modeling technique with the assistance of SmartPLS software was utilized in data analysis relating to the hypothesized paths in the research framework. Findings show that bill estimation anxiety and perceived behavioral control were the critical factors that determine smart meter purchase intentions and indirectly influence sustainable energy consumption behavior. Other lesser yet significant constructs were environmental concern, attitude, and subjective norm. Theoretical and potential energy policy/marketing implications of the findings were highlighted.
