Computer aided industrial design (CAID) brings qualitative changes for traditional industrial design on the sides of design method, process and theory. In this paper a new method is proposed with the aim of making the model capable of holding and manipulating the shape features in order to support the students in the design process. The key concept of this study is virtual model making system (VMMS) which consists of numerous sets of rules. VMMS is a new CAID method, and its technical ideas derive from the model making process of automotive product design. With this new CAID method, designers can do any kinds of styling operations on virtual model in the virtual environment generated by computer, such as the cutting or pasting operation on kinds of material. The system was described briefly and a new teaching method of industrial design course was introduced.

At present, many domestic and international products' design are promoted the design concept based on the user experience or user awareness. It has been generally aware of the industrial design is no longer just belong to the narrow shape and design areas, therefore a correct understanding of user experience and user awareness is very necessary, whereas in the study of design theory, a lot of people have user experience mixed with user awareness as one concept, it's a truth that the both are closely linked, while there are certain differences between them, if they are mixed together, it will not only narrow us thinking play space, but also disable to achieve greater breakthroughs in the design process of innovation, on the contrary if the correct understanding and reasonable use of the both and furthermore transplanted into the design of the product, for the current field of industrial design, it is a huge reform and innovation.

In order to provide products that can be tailored to the need of the customer, it is necessary to integrate the customer into the design process. In this paper we present a mass customization computer-aided design (CAD) framework that helps to integrate the customer into the design of user-configurable products. A template approach, which considers both modularity and scaling, is utilized to concisely represent a CAD model of the entire family. The system accepts user selections and parameters to automatically create a CAD model of the customized product in real time and then shows the model to the user. The system is implemented using PRO/ENGINEER and demonstrated through customization of bicycle frames.

As an advanced design idea nowadays, to realize body’s healthy movement, healthy industrial design (be called HID for short) pursues user’s “health, happiness and joy”, Different types of limits will be treated dynamically for this goal during the whole design process. The adjustable limit will be treated by changing the subjective reason leading to it, while the un-adjustable limit will be treated by optimizing user’s behavior and producer’s structure, material, color etc.

Proceeding from the industrial design, the conceptions of product design gene are studied, the knowledge structure of product design gene is analyzed, the hybridization and variability technology of design gene is researched, and the innovation design method based on pan-ethnic group design gene is proposed. And the feasibility and effectiveness of this new method are discussed.

Today, product design process is facing a market globalisation led by distributed teams. The international market context, in which industrial companies evolve, leads design teams to work in a large multidisciplinary collaborative context using collaborative practices. In this context, product design process is driven by the integration and optimisation of stakeholders’ collaboration. Thus, to facilitate collaborative steps, new management strategies are defined and new information systems can be used. To this end, we have focused our article on the topic of collaborative product design project management. We have underlined the necessity to use quantitative and non-intrusive indicators during the management of collaborative design phases besides subjective evaluations. Tracking these indicators is performed in parallel to the existing approaches in order to evaluate the performance of collaborative design project. Moreover, these indicators can show the impact of the collaboration steps on the design project evolution. The computation of proposed indicators is based on precise metrics which details the completeness of the computer-aided design model and its evolution depending on the used collaborative tools and the project milestones. This computation uses the importance of each computer-aided design model part and the transformation rate of each part of the computer-aided design model.

In order to reduce the information chaos of product design, we present the main motions of Design-Element based product design that we call itDE-PD. Different from traditional product design process composed of function, style, or customer requirements etc.al,DE-PDis driven by the knowledge and information flows in product design iteration. InDE-PD, the product is composed of Design-Elements (DE) which is the integration of related knowledge and information. After discussing the definition and information construct ofDE, we present the iteration ofDEbased product design. To evaluate the method, a design case of beach motorcycle with limit mount ofDEsis conceived. Evaluation results show thatDE-PDis a promising approach for product design informatization.

Nowadays a general platform has played an important role in the product design process. As the traditional similarity measure used in module division is to the design stage in which the features and set are static, it is impossible to find the similar components in alterative design stages. For this reason, a new common platform design method on extension-distance is presented. According to build the relative function, the threshold used in the key module identification is easy to generate. Then the tolerance-constraint functions in the customized components division for the common platform generation. Then the adaptability measure is used to find the optimal case in the database. The measure has been used in the gasoline saw common platform design process.
