For the purpose of improving the efficiency of garment design, the computer-aided garment design virtual reality (VR) model for surplus fabric removal and reuse without segmentation of cutting pieces is analyzed in this paper to provide the architecture of the computer-aided garment design CAD system. The form of dividing the garment into multiple types of nonsegmented pieces is adopted so that each nonsegmented piece stands for a complete design element unit. Based on this structure, the computer analysis of garment design based on CAD can be connected at a deeper level, which will not only improve the design efficiency of new garments but also reduce the design time at the client terminal and enhance the quality of the design. Through the experimental operation of prototypes, it is verified that the intelligent system proposed in this paper can implement the design of prototypes quickly and effectively.

Excitonic energy transfer in light harvesting complexes, the primary process of photosynthesis, operates with near-unity efficiency. Experimental and theoretical studies suggest that quantum mechanical wave-like motion of excitons in the pigment-protein complex may be responsible for this quantum efficiency. Observed coherent exciton dynamics can be modelled completely only if we consider the interaction of the exciton with its complex environment. While it is known that the relative orientation of the chromophore units and reorganisation energy are important design elements, the role of a structured phonon environment is often not considered. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of a structured immediate phonon environment in determining the exciton dynamics and the possibility of using it as an optimal design element. Through the case study of dithia-anthracenophane, a bichromophore using the Hierarchical Equations Of Motion formalism, we show that the experimentally observed coherent exciton dynamics can be reproduced only by considering the actual structure of the phonon environment. While the slow dephasing of quantum coherence in dithia-anthracenophane can be attributed to strong vibronic coupling to high-frequency modes, vibronic quenching is the source of long oscillation periods in population transfer. This study sheds light on the crucial role of the structure of the immediate phonon environment in determining the exciton dynamics. We conclude by proposing some design principles for sustaining long-lived coherence in molecular systems.

Abstract. This paper studies three urban design elements, namely pathways, nodes, and edges, in Kampung Kuala Muda, Penaga, a traditional fishing village in Penang. The case study portrays the resistance of a fishing settlement by exhibiting a unique local culture of whispering auction market that is celebrated by many, including locals and tourists. The study of the paths, edges, and nodes of the case study is carried out by applying a qualitative method and data collection through a site visit, informal interviews, and literature reviews from published journals, online news, and articles. The fishing activities heavily influence the layout setting of Kampung Kuala Muda. The urban design element is observed to be the most significant in directing the users' perspectives.

AbstractMunicipal waste sorting is an important but neglected topic within sustainability-oriented Information Systems research. Most waste management systems depend on the quality of their citizens pre-sorting but lack teaching resources. Thus, it is important to raise awareness and knowledge on correct waste sorting to strengthen current efforts. Having shown promising results in raising learning outcomes and motivation in domains like health and economics, gamification is an auspicious approach to address this problem. The paper explores the effectiveness of gameful design on learning outcomes of waste sorting knowledge with a mobile game app that implements two different learning strategies: repetition and elaboration. In a laboratory experiment, the overall learning outcome of participants who trained with the game was compared to that of participants who trained with standard analogue non-game materials. Furthermore, the effects of two additional, learning-enhancing design elements – repetition and look-up – were analyzed. Learning outcome in terms of long-term retention and knowledge transfer were evaluated through three different testing measures two weeks after the training: in-game, through a multiple-choice test and real-life sorting. The results show that the game significantly enhanced the learning outcome of waste sorting knowledge for all measures, which is particularly remarkable for the real-life measure, as similar studies were not successful with regard to knowledge transfer to real life. Furthermore, look-up is found to be a promising game design element that is not yet established in IS literature and therefore should be considered more thoroughly in future research and practical implementations alike.

Abstract Texture is an important synesthetic design element used in textile products. The three-dimensional surface of texture changes the amount and angle of reflected light causing a color appearance change from its original color. In this work, for a wide range of colors, it was quantitatively analyzed how the color appearances change depending on different textures and illumination, such as CIE standard illuminants A, F11, F2, and D65. It was found that strong-textured fabrics (with a surface roughness Ra of 0.46 mm) had larger hue appearance changes and consequent overall color appearance changes from their true colors due to illuminants than non-textured papers (with a surface roughness Ra of 0.03 mm). Between two types of fabrics with different textures of 0.25 and 0.46 mm, however, there was no significant difference in the magnitude of color appearance changes, indicating that the difference in surface roughness greater than 0.43 mm can produce significant differences in color appearance changes induced by illumination. It was also found that the magnitude and direction of color appearance changes under different CIE illuminants differed significantly according to the physical chroma and hue of the surface.

Abstract City Information Modelling (CIM) is becoming an important base model of Smart City and Digital Twin City, which can realise intelligent city design and management. Lately, CIM has become the focuses of urban planning and design studies. Under the influence of building information model (BIM), smart city and three-dimensional city simulation, city-level information modelling, CIM connects different BIM levels integrates the spatial expression effect of GIS. This review introduces CIM development from using generating procedures, such as rules and typological processes, to analyse urban scenarios to form the city full information scene through the integration of BIM, GIS, and IoT. The paper also overviews the technical path of construction with CIM implementation, problems existing in the current practice of CIM technology, including all information of digital and lightweight data, scene fast calls and data standard uniformity, etc. Following the latest CIM progress, the paper puts forward some ways to realise the effective use of CIM in urban planning and design. The further review focuses on big data security, publicity, urban design element and CIM platform practical use in China.

Abstract A child-friendly city environment contains elements of security, health and comfort, especially in the midst of the current pandemic. This paper aims to study the child-friendly designs in urban public spaces, especially city parks. The study objective was to find the level of performance and importance of child-friendly design in the case study of Indonesian city parks. The research stages include aspects of perceptions and expectations by users as well as development proposals based on expert opinions. Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) technique is used to determine the level of suitability, performance and importance of child-friendly design elements in the case study of city parks. The case study used is Trunojoyo Smart Park, Malang City. Analysis Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique is used for the proposed development of sustainable improvement of child-friendly spaces. The level of suitability of garden elements has the highest value above the average of 116.73%. While the pedestrian path element has the highest performance value and importance with scores of 169 and 156 respectively. The child-friendly design element that has the lowest performance is the sand game vehicle (132). Two child-friendly design elements that become development priorities for both users and experts are safe spaces and play equipment which have a suitability rate of 113.92% and 108.90%, respectively, and the experts’ priority values are 0.117 and 0.083, respectively.

The absence of existing standards for product recovery planning and the associated difficulty in prioritising the conflicting design requirements are among the main challenges faced during product design. In this paper, a concept for the Design for Multiple Life-Cycles (DFMLC) is proposed to address this situation. The objective of the DFMLC model is to assist designers in evaluating design attributes of Multiple Life-Cycle Products (MLCP) at the early design stage. The methodology adopted for the evaluation of MLCP design strategies has been based on a modified Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Two mapping matrices of the design guidelines and design strategies concerning MLCP design attributes were developed for the modified AHP model. Disassemblability (> 21 %) was found to be the most important design element for MLCP followed by serviceability (> 20 %) and reassembly (> 12 %).

The development of organic food products has proliferated over the past few decades, alongside the use of “white” space on products’ packaging as an element that communicates quality and sustainability values. Despite a growing interest towards green products, sustainable business practices and aesthetics, there is not enough evidence on how specific design elements (i.e., “white” space) of organic food packaging could affect consumers’ brand perceptions, attitude towards the brand (Abr) and purchase intentions (PI). The present study seeks to unveil the role of “white” space as a packaging design element on the effectiveness of organic food products. Based on a content analysis of 406 international packaging designs it establishes the widespread coexistence of organic products with extended, in shades of gray “white” space. A between-subjects experiment with 305 young adults builds on the associations between “white” space and sustainability, and provides evidence on the proposed serial mediation model with perceived naturalness, quality and trustworthiness, and Abr as mediators in the relationship between organic food products and PI, especially when the packaging uses extended “white” space. Pertinent managerial implications with respect to effective packaging design that promotes sustainability values and generates positive attitudes and behaviors towards organic foods are underlined.

Urban sprawl and increasing population density in urban centers create the challenge to finding ways of sustainable transportation solutions that preserve the convenience of residents while reducing emissions. Therefore, walkability is a core urban design element because of being advantageous onto three fronts: health, livability, and sustainability. Adopting walkability as urban solution relieves conceptual and practical tensions between the individualistic interests manifested in the desire to own and use private cars, and the need to reduce transportation-based consumption. This review advocates that long-term health benefits from walking and physical activity are the premier incentive to repurpose our cities to be more sustainable and more walking friendly, and spark behavioral change into reducing car dependency for all daily transportations. The review inspects physical elements of the built environment that make the walking trip feasible and desirable, such as connectivity, accessibility, and closeness of destination points, presence of greenness and parks, commercial retail, and proximity to transit hubs and stations. Hence, this review explores a few popular walkability evaluation indices and frameworks that employ subjective, objective, and/or distinctive methods within variant environmental, cultural, and national context. There is no unified universal standardized walkability theory despite the need for rigorous evaluation tools for policy makers and developers. Furthermore, there is a lack of emphasis on air quality and thermal stress while approaching walkability, despite being important elements in the walking experience. Research opportunities in the field of walkability can leverage location tracking from smart devices and identify the interaction patterns of pedestrians with other transportation modes, especially for those with fundamental movement challenges such as wheelchair users.
