Corrosion Resistance of MgO-ZrO2 Brick and MgO-Cr2O3 Brick Compared by Rotating Slag Attacking Method

An environment-friendly material MgO-ZrO2 brick which is hoped to substitute for MgO-Cr2O3 brick was investigated. The using effects of MgO-ZrO2 brick and MgO-Cr2O3 brick were compared by rotating slag attacking method whose environment is similar to the environment in RH degasser. It indicates that the corrosion resistance performance of MgO-ZrO2 brick is better than that of MgO-Cr2O3 brick. Due to the effect of molten steel, slag and oxygen, Fe being oxidized to FeO or Fe2O3 at high temperature 1900K will produce volume expansion which results in MgO-Cr2O3 brick being cracked. At the same time, Cr2O3 will be decomposed to CrO3 gas, which will be evaporated seriously by the airflow and lead to MgO-Cr2O3 brick structural loosen and deterioration, ultimately. While the activity of oxygen dissolved molten steel is extremely low and ZrO2 is stable in the rotary kiln at 1900K. Furthermore, ZrO2 will react rapidly with CaO and its product CaZrO3 will form dense layer to prevent MgO-ZrO2 brick from being corroded. Therefore, trial production of MgO-ZrO2 brick applied for RH degasser is recommended.

An environment-friendly non-chromium chemical conversion coating was obtained from fluozirconate/fluotitanate acidic solution for the corrosion protection of AA 5083. The surface morphology, composition, electrochemical behavior and corrosion resistance of this coating were investigated. The coating was found to be a homogeneous and dense layer consisting of nano-size particles, of which the major component was compound oxides consisted by Al, Mg, Zr, Ti, F and O. The results of electrochemical measurements, immersion and natural salt spray (NSS) tests demonstrated that the corrosion resistance of the AA 5083 H-116 was improved by the nano-sized non-chromium chemical conversion coating considerably, which was most attributed to the great inhibitive action on the anodic dissolution by acting as a protective barrier layer.

Abstract Kubota alloy HN is an austenitic Fe-Ni-Cr alloy with long-term creep-rupture properties that are intermediate between those of HK40 and HP40 alloys. Carburization resistance is better than that of HK40, but oxidation resistance is generally lower, making the alloy suitable for long service at 1095 deg C (2000 deg F). Abstract To explore corrosion characteristics of TP91, C22 alloy and C22 laser coatings in reducing environment caused by low-nitrogen combustion at 500°C-600°C, a synthetic corrosive medium containing 0.2 vol. % H2S-0.1 vol. % O2-N2 were selected. Results showed that the order of corrosion resistance is: C22 laser coatings>C22 alloy>TP91. 550°C was the limit corrosion temperature for C22 alloy and C22 laser coatings. The reason for the strong corrosion resistance of C22 alloy and C22 laser coatings is that a dense layer of Cr-rich corrosion products due to the is produced in the inner layer, thus protecting the matrix from direct corrosion by corrosive gas. Finer grains before corrosion tests and the formation of dense Cr2O3 inner layers in much speedier process were the main reasons for the best corrosion resistance of C22 laser coatings.

The exhaust pipe of a heavy duty vehicle, due to its harsh operating environment, is subject to corrosion caused by high temperature oxidization, chlorination and sulfuration, therefore, corrosion occurs very easily, which affects normal operation of the engine. The exhaust pipe of the engine can be protected by means of electro-thermal explosion spray-coating technique. The corrosion-resistant ability of coating in high temperature environment is surveyed respectively. The micro organizational structure of coating is studied in combination with SEM, EDS and other tests to search for corrosion-resistant principle of the coating in an attempt to improve the corrosion-resistance of the exhaust pipe of the engine.
