In this paper, a novel method is investigated to detect short-circuit fault signal transmission lines in strong noise environment based on discrete wavelet transform theory. Simulation results show that the method can accurately determine the fault position, can effectively analyze the non-stationary signal and be suitable for transmission line fault occurred after transient signal detection. Furthermore, it can effectively eliminate noise effects of fault signal so as to realize the transmission lines of accurate fault.

Defects such as insulator, pins, and counterweight in highvoltage transmission lines affect the stability of the power system. The small targets such as pins in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) inspection images of transmission lines occupy a small proportion in the images and the characteristic representations are poor which results a low defect detection rate and a high false positive rate. This paper proposed a transmission line pin defect detection algorithm based on improved Faster R-CNN. First, the pre-training weights with higher matching degree are obtained based on transfer learning. And it is applied to construct defect detection model. Then, the regional proposal network is used to extract features in the model. The results of defect detection are obtained by regression calculation and classification of regional characteristics. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the pin defect detection of the transmission line reaches 81.25%

The flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) have been widely used in modern power systems. Because of the presence of the FACTS devices, distance relays in transmission lines may inaccurately locate fault locations. Therefore, it is significant to find a mechanism for locating fault in transmission lines connected to FACTS in which a static var compensator (SVC) is investigated in this work. Based on the development of a phasor measurement unit (PMU) with global positioning system (GPS), this paper proposes a new method for calculating apparent impedance seen by the distance relay location while a short-circuit fault occurs in a transmission line connected the SVC to the midpoint of the line. According to the method, sampled voltage and current measurement at the relay and SVC locations are synchronized using PMUs and the synchronized measurements are then used to calculate a new apparent impedance and to locate the fault location in the line. The method in this paper has the capability for fast calculation and it also has the robustness for identifying different fault types in power systems. Matlab/Simulink software is applied to simulate the study results and to evaluate the correctness of the modeling and effectiveness of the proposed method for locating fault in this paper.

The continuous monitoring of transmission line protection relay is desirable to ensure the system disturbance such as fault inception is detected in transmission line. Therefore, fault on transmission line needs to be detected, classified, and located accurately to maintain the stability of system. This project presents design enhancement and development under voltage relay in power system protection using MATLAB/Simulink. The under-voltage relay is a relay that has contacts that operate when voltage drops below a set voltage which is used for protection against voltage drops to detect short circuit and others. This study is carried out for all types of faults which only related with one of the parallel lines. For the overall of operation conditions, the sample data were generated for the system by varying the different fault types and fault location. This design system proposes the use of MATLAB/ Simulink based method for fast and reliable fault classification and location for a various type of fault.

This research work investigated the effect of fault location on short-circuit calculations for a high voltage transmission line equipped with a novel FACTS device, namely Thyristor Controlled Voltage Regulator (TCVR). This main function of this device was to control the voltage and active power of the line. The paper considered a study case for a 220 kV transmission line, in the Algerian transmission power network, which was subjected to a phase to earth fault in the presence of a fixed fault resistance. The paper presented theoretical analysis of the short-circuit calculations which was confirmed by the illustrated simulation results. Simulation results showed the impact of the fault location on the symmetrical current and voltage components of the line, and transmission line phase currents and voltages; before using TCVR and in the presence of TCVR for both cases of positive and negative TCVR controlled voltage.

Abstract For power transmission systems, accurate and reliable fault location methods can ensure rapid recovery of faulty lines and improve power supply reliability. In order to solve the problems of the structural complexity of the transmission system and the difficulty of line fault location, a single-ended fault location and early warning method of transmission line based on back propagation neural network is proposed. First, the fault line selection is performed quickly when the fault occurs. Then, the voltage fault components collected at the measuring point when the fault occurs are decomposed and reconstructed by wavelet packet to obtain the wavelet packet energy, which is used as the input sample to train through the nonlinear fitting ability of back propagation. With the help of backpropagation neural network, arbitrary complex functions can be processed, and the learning results can be accurately used for new knowledge, and circuit faults can be diagnosed conveniently and quickly. Finally, the corresponding fault distance can be output by substituting the wavelet packet energy reflecting the fault location. The simulation results show that the method has strong resistance to transition resistance and high positioning accuracy.

A new method for short circuit fault location is proposed based on instantaneous signal measurement and its derivatives, and is based on the retardation phenomena. The difference between the times in which a signal is registered in two detectors is used to locate the fault. Although a description of faults in terms of a lumped circuit is useful for elucidating the methods for detecting the fault. This description will not suffice to describe the fault signal propagation hence a distributed models is needed which is given in terms of the telegraph equations. Those equations are used to derive a transmission line transfer function, and an exact analytical description of the short circuit signal propagating in the transmission line is obtained. The analytical solution was verified both by numerical simulations and experimentally.

Summary Aim: Even with careful observation, the overall false-positive rate of laparotomy remains 10-15% when acute appendicitis was suspected. Therefore, the clinical efficacy of Tc-99m HMPAO labeled leukocyte (TC-WBC) scan for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in patients presenting with atypical clinical findings is assessed. Patients and Methods: Eighty patients presenting with acute abdominal pain and possible acute appendicitis but atypical findings were included in this study. After intravenous injection of TC-WBC, serial anterior abdominal/pelvic images at 30, 60, 120 and 240 min with 800k counts were obtained with a gamma camera. Any abnormal localization of radioactivity in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen, equal to or greater than bone marrow activity, was considered as a positive scan. Results: 36 out of 49 patients showing positive TC-WBC scans received appendectomy. They all proved to have positive pathological findings. Five positive TC-WBC were not related to acute appendicitis, because of other pathological lesions. Eight patients were not operated and clinical follow-up after one month revealed no acute abdominal condition. Three of 31 patients with negative TC-WBC scans received appendectomy. They also presented positive pathological findings. The remaining 28 patients did not receive operations and revealed no evidence of appendicitis after at least one month of follow-up. The overall sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive and negative predictive values for TC-WBC scan to diagnose acute appendicitis were 92, 78, 86, 82, and 90%, respectively. Conclusion: TC-WBC scan provides a rapid and highly accurate method for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in patients with equivocal clinical examination. It proved useful in reducing the false-positive rate of laparotomy and shortens the time necessary for clinical observation.

Abstract:The analysis of the clinical efficiency of a biochemical parameter in the prediction of chromosome anomalies is described, using a database of 475 cases including 30 abnormalities. A comparison was made of two different approaches to the statistical analysis: the use of Gaussian frequency distributions and likelihood ratios, and logistic regression. Both methods computed that for a 5% false-positive rate approximately 60% of anomalies are detected on the basis of maternal age and serum PAPP-A. The logistic regression analysis is appropriate where the outcome variable (chromosome anomaly) is binary and the detection rates refer to the original data only. The likelihood ratio method is used to predict the outcome in the general population. The latter method depends on the data or some transformation of the data fitting a known frequency distribution (Gaussian in this case). The precision of the predicted detection rates is limited by the small sample of abnormals (30 cases). Varying the means and standard deviations (to the limits of their 95% confidence intervals) of the fitted log Gaussian distributions resulted in a detection rate varying between 42% and 79% for a 5% false-positive rate. Thus, although the likelihood ratio method is potentially the better method in determining the usefulness of a test in the general population, larger numbers of abnormal cases are required to stabilise the means and standard deviations of the fitted log Gaussian distributions.
