In order to solve the forming defects in the steel ball cold heading process, a novel force sensor which chooses the PVDF piezoelectric films as force-sensing elements is designed. The advantages and disadvantages of piezoelectric force sensor on measurement of the cold heading force are compared with existing force sensors. By using FEM, sensor’s linearity and the structure size are analyzed. Compared with the traditional sensor, this structure is more reasonable. The presented PVDF piezoelectric force sensor has wide frequency range, good dynamic performance, and can realize dynamic measurement.

In this paper we introduce fully optically transparent impedance biosensors based on intrinsic nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) films deposited on glass substrate. Prepared sensors have an interdigital electrode (IDE) structures realized by local hydrogen and oxygen termination of diamond surface, which mean in-plane configuration of active sensor area. Sensors were tested by real time monitoring of human osteoblast-like MG 63 cells in wide frequency range from 10 Hz to 100 kHz for several days. Two different measurement setups were used and compared regarding to their advantages and disadvantages. Proof of concept of diamond-based impedance sensor is showed, i.e. time dependence and frequency dependence (Nyquist plots) of absolute impedance.

Piezoelectric amplifier is a very important part of the piezoelectric actuator. Not only positioning accuracy, but also dynamic performance and power are demanded more and more highly. At present piezoelectric amplifier are mainly used in static applications, power and frequency response are usually incompatible. This paper developed a new type of piezoelectric amplifier to meet high demand for dynamic, which takes dual-power supply, bridge-output to achieved slew rate, power were doubled, and maintain a wide frequency range at the same time. Controller implements DDS unit through FPGA, which could achieve sine, triangle, square and sawtooth.

This paper presents the investigation of the root causes of the fast degradation of a railway crossing. The dynamic performance of the crossing was assessed using the sensor-based crossing instrumentation, and the measurement results were verified using the multi-body system (MBS) vehicle-crossing model. Together with the field inspections, the measurement and simulation results indicate that the fast crossing degradation was caused by the high wheel-rail impact forces related to the hunting motion of the passing trains. Additionally, it was shown that the train hunting was activated by the track geometry misalignment in front of the crossing. The obtained results have not only explained the extreme values in the measured responses, but also shown that crossing degradation is not always caused by the problems in the crossing itself, but can also be caused by problems in the adjacent track structures. The findings of this study were implemented in the condition monitoring system for railway crossings, using which timely and correctly aimed maintenance actions can be performed.

Signal processing plays a significant role in building any condition monitoring system. Many types of signals can be used for condition monitoring of machines, such as vibration signals, as in this research; and processing these signals in an appropriate way is crucial in extracting the most salient features related to different fault types. A number of signal processing techniques can fulfil this purpose, and the nature of the captured signal is a significant factor in the selection of the appropriate technique. This chapter starts with a discussion of the proposed robot condition monitoring algorithm. Then, a consideration of the signal processing techniques which can be applied in condition monitoring is carried out to identify their advantages and disadvantages, from which the time-domain and discrete wavelet transform signal analysis are selected.
