A layer of densely distributed copper particles has been deposited on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by pretreatment including oxidation, sensitization and activation and electroless plating methods. Due to our experiments, the rate of deposition will increase by increasing the PH value and temperature of the solution bath properly. Different morphologies of coatings have been obtained with different PH values and temperatures. The most suitable PH value and temperature of the plating bath were 11.5 and 20°C, respectively.

A facile and effective approach based on magnetic separation was developed for the adsorption of Rhodamine B ( RhB ) from aqueous solution using magnetic oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (magnetic o-MWCNTs) as adsorbent. The magnetic o-MWCNTs were simply synthesized by assembling magnetic nanoparticles onto the oxidized MWCNTs. Adsorption conditions such as pH values, the dosage of adsorbent added and adsorption time were investigated and optimized to achieve the best removal value. In addition, kinetics, adsorption isotherms and adsorption thermodynamics were studied to understand the mechanism by which the magnetic o-MWCNTs adsorbed RhB . The results indicated that the proposed method based on magnetic o-MWCNTs as magnetic absorbent was rapid and efficient for the removal of RhB . Furthermore, the magnetic o-MWCNTs could be easily removed after adsorption process and regenerated through desorption by ethanol.

A noncovalent method was presented in order to improve the solubility of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in water. Poly (ε-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine) (PZLL) was prepared by ring-opening polymerization of ε-carbobenzoxy-L-lysine N-carboxyanhydride (Z-L-Lys NCA). After the removal of the benzyloxycarbonyl group, water-soluble poly-L-lysine (PLL) was obtained. The structure of PZLL and PLL was characterized by FTIR and 1H NMR. Dispersion of MWCNTs in the water solution of PLL was investigated by ultraviolet spectrophotometer and visual inspection. When the mass ratio of MWCNTs to PLL is 1:50 and the pH value of the water solution of PLL is 5, MWCNTs can be well dispersed in water.

Pristine and oxygen functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes were used as adsorbent for removal of Methyl Orange (MO) dye. The adsorption was carried out under different pH values. The analysis of results indicated that the adsorption characteristics of the MO dye by pristine carbon nanotubes (P-CNTs) and oxygen functionalized carbon nanotubes (O2-CNTs) are highly influenced by the pH of the medium. The study report that the best pH medium of solution for the adsorption of MO on both CNTs was acid medium. The point of zero charge (pzc) of O2-CNTs and P-CNTs were determined as function of pH. The pzc of P-CNTs and O2-CNTs are found to be 4.7 and 3.9, respectively. The adsorption data have been analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich. Fitting the equilibrium adsorption data by Langmuir and Freundlich models shows that experimental data well explained by the Langmuir equation.

Ni-P-multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Ni-P-MWNTs) composite coating was successfully co-deposited on 45 steel substrate by electroless plating. The microscopic morphology of Ni-P-MWNTs composite coating was observed by SEM. The influences of CNTs concentration in plating bath on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of the composite coating were investigated. The results indicated that the deposited composite coating shows dispersed CNTs and continuous Ni-P matrix, and there are no pores and cracks and other defects at the interface between the substrate and composite coating, and the thickness of the composite coating is about 50 μm. The Ni-P-MWNTs composite coating with 0.3g/L CNTs in bath displayed the best corrosion resistance, the corrosion potential of the composite coating is-0.372V.

The multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) are used as an adsorbent to remove humic acid (HA) from boiler feedwater. The experiment carries on in different temperatures, different MCNTs dosages, different pH value and different HA initial concentration to study adsorption HA property by MCNTs. The adsorption kinetics is well fitted with pseudo-second-order rate model, the adsorption mechanism is mainly attributed to the π-π electron-donor-acceptor interaction between the aromatic ring of HA and the surface carboxylic groups of MCNTs. The adsorption isotherms are fitted better with Langmuir than Freundlich models, the parameters of equilibrium constant, standard free energy (ΔG), standard enthalpy (ΔH), and standard entropy changes (ΔS) are calculated according to experiments, which shows adsorption of HA onto PAC is an exothermic process.
