This paper presents a comparative study on performance of conventional PI controller and fuzzy controller on three phase, three wire voltage source inverter based shunt active filter that is used to compensate the harmonics currents drawn by non-linear loads in distribution systems. Hysteresis PWM method is used to generate the pulses to the switches used in active filter. The compensation is based on PLL method of fundamental current extraction. The nonlinear load taken into account is a three phase diode bridge rectifier.

The excessive of power electronics devices in distribution system has evolved the problem of power quality. This work represents the effective solution of shunt active power filter for eliminating the harmonics to maintain the quality of utility power supply. In the proposed scheme shunt active filter acts as a voltage source and eliminates harmonics by injecting equal but opposite harmonics components at the point of common coupling. Simulation of shunt active filter based on instantaneous reactive has been achieved in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. The controllers are being designed with the objective of reducing the THD% in voltage and current available at the nonlinear load terminal of the system. The controller incorporated optimization algorithms based on the artificial intelligence techniques as well. The comparative analysis of the effectiveness and efficiency of the controllers in improving the quality factors has been carried out. The distortion level in the output voltage waveforms in both the cases being fed to the load when compared, it is found that proposed hybrid structure of control for the filter is more effective in reducing the distortion as compared to standard PQ theory based architecture. The study concluded that the total harmonic distortion in the voltage output waveform being fed to the load using only PQ theory based online learning algorithm is found to be 1.59 % while in case of the output voltage at the load terminal from the power filter using proposed hybrid algorithm comprising of NN learning with CSA optimizing control and PQ_RLS algorithm for THD reduction the THD% level is 0.43 %.

Adaptive neural network (ANN) topology-based control is proposed in this paper for three phase three wire shunt active power filter (SAPF) application. The proposed controller improves power quality and compensates harmonic components. The system includes a current controlled voltage source inverter (CC-VSI) using three phase insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBT), a DSP module for generating regulated pulse width modulated (PWM) pulse and reference DC bus. The increase in nonlinear load applications has raised power quality issues. SAPF has emerged as one of the best solutions to improve power quality. Application of ANN in SAPF eliminates the need for unit template generation and the tuning requirement of phase locked loop (PLL), as required in traditional SAPF. The proposed ANN based SAPF can be dynamically regulated for minimum harmonic contamination. The results were obtained and verified in Matlab/ Simulink platform.

Abstract In this research paper, the shunt active filter (SHAF) is used to improve the power quality of electrical network by mitigating the harmonics with the help of different control strategies (p-q control strategy, Id-Iq control strategy, PHC control strategy) for three phase three wire system. It is quite difficult to optimize the performance of power system networks using conventional methods, because of complex nature of the systems that are highly non-linear and non-stationary. Three phase reference current waveforms generated by the proposed schemes are tracked by three phase voltage source converter in a hysteresis band control scheme. The performance of proposed control strategies has been evaluated in terms of harmonic mitigation and DC link voltage regulation under various source voltage conditions. The proposed SHAF with different control strategies is able to eliminate uncertainty in the system and SHAF gains outstanding compensation abilities. The detailed simulation results using MATLAB/Simulink software are presented to support the feasibility of the proposed control strategy.

This paper presents a modified hybrid Controller based on instantaneous power-fuzzy controller (IPFLC) for a shunt active power filter (SAPF). The current produced by the AC source is polluted by harmonics injected by the non-linear loads. The supply system requires filtering by suppressing harmonic currents to improve power quality at interface bus. The filtering system consists of an LC filter and a SAPF. The proposed IPFL Controller for the SAPF is based on a combination of the p-q instantaneous power and the fuzzy logic strategy. In this part, two cases are studied, first the active filter is connected only to a capacitor by its dc side, and second case where the active filter is connected to a photovoltaic source or to a battery. The effectiveness, robustness and the dynamic speed of the proposed controller is validated and assessed using dynamic digital simulation. Digital Simulation results validated also the effectiveness of the active filter scheme with modified controller in reducing the source current THD from 25.87% to 0.83% which largely meets the standards of IEEE STD and International Electro-technical Commission (IEC). Digital Simulation and validation used MATLAB-SIMULINK Software Environment.

The power quality problem in the power system is increased with the use of non-linear devices. Due to the use of non-linear devices like power electronic converters, there is an increase in harmonic content in the source current. Due to this there is an increase in the losses, instability and poor voltage waveform. To mitigate the harmonics and provide the reactive power compensation, we use filters. There are different filters used in the power system. Passive filters provide limited compensation, so active filters can be used for variable compensation. In this work, a shunt active filter has been made adaptive using a Variable Leaky Least Mean Square (VLLMS) based controller. Proposed adaptive controller can be able to compensate for harmonic currents, power factor and nonlinear load unbalance. DC capacitor voltage has been regulated at a desired level using a PI controller and a self-charging circuit technique. But, this scheme as two disadvantages such as, tuning issues of current controller pre-requisites the traditional PI controller, which is controlled by intelligent based Hybrid-Fuzzy-Logic controller for achieving good performance features. The design concept of proposed intelligent Hybrid-Fuzzy controller for shunt active filter has been verified through simulation analysis and results are presented with proper comparisons.

This paper depicts the methodology of improving power quality at load end is connected with renewable source of energy for power generation. The excessive of power physics devices in distribution system has evolved the matter of power quality. Shunt active power filter (SAPF) acts as a current supply and suppresses the harmonics by introducing the same amount of compensating opposite harmonics component along with common coupling. Simulation design of SAPF based on d-q model is implemented using MATLAB/simulink Toolbox. It explores the modelling of a Proportional Integral (PI) and fuzzy logic controller (FLC) based, SAPF for a 3 wire network to compensate current harmonics fed to a nonlinear load. The proposed model can be validated and its robustness will be checked through the simulation results. Simulation results illustrate that the logic based active filter out performs the PI based shunt active filter.
