Based on the investigation of end plate and angle of semi-rigid connection in the steel frame of beam-column, an analysis of two connection type damage phenomenons, stiffness, bearing capacity and ductility, and then with the experimental results concluded above, the similarity and differences between the two semi-rigid connections can be extensively discussed. And with that, it can naturally be concluded that the end-plate connection is a good load capacity and ductility properties of semi-rigid connection type. These for, the conclusion can provide test basis for the ideal steel structure semi-rig seismic node design and application.

Based on the connection tests of the semi-rigid nodes in the beam-column T-typed member and end plate of steel frame, this paper analyzes the failure phenomena, stiffness, bearing capacity and flexibility of two types of attachments. And according to the tests results, it compares the two types of attachments each other and proposes that T-typed member is a better type of attachment on its bearing capacity and flexibility. Therefore, it provides the experimental basis for the ideal design and application of attachments among the semi-rigid nodes in steel structures.

Steel frames can be designed as simple, semi-continuous, and continuous construction. However, these types of constructions depend on the type of connections used. Connections are usually classified in design as pinned which is associated with simple construction or rigid which is associated with continuous construction. However, the actual behaviour in most cases is classified as semi-rigid connections or partial strength. The semi-rigid connections usually associated with the stiffness of the connection while the strength of this connection usually associated with partial strength. The use of semi-rigid connection has been encouraged by Euro-code 3 and studies on the matter known as semi-continuous construction have proven that substantial savings in steel weight of the overall construction. A series of parametric studies on two bays of two, four, six, and eight storey of multi-storey braced steel frame are presented in this paper. All frames are designed using S275 steel and flush end-plate connection was used as connection for semi-continuous construction whereas fin plate connection was used for simple construction. The frames are designed both as simple construction and semi-continuous construction and the steel weight of the frames was calculated and compared. From the parametric study it was found that by using partial strength connection the saving in steel weight of the frames is in the range of 11.5% to 22.5% of the total steel weight of the frames.

In the present paper, we investigate the effect of a padding-plate on the behavior of extended end-plate semi-rigid connections. The numerical simulations were carried out for a standard extended end-plate connection joint without padding-plate and two connection joints with 4mm and 6mm thick padding-plates. The existing experimental results verified the validity of the numerical model. The numerical results have shown that a thin padding-plate will more or less decline the carrying load capacity of the connection joint but greatly improve the connect ductility. Filling a thin padding-plate in the end-plate connection is feasible and brings the forewarning function.

In order to study the seismic behavior of steel frame structure, based on the verification of the finite element program, two different end-plate connections under monotonic load and cyclic load are analysed with the finite-element software ANSYS, considering geometry, material and status nonlinearity. Some parameters such as height of endplate, array of blot, diameter of blot are analysed to study their effects on the seismic behavior of beam-to-column end-plate connection, the bearing capacity of the joint of the framework, the initial rotation stiffness, the ultimate turning power, power-wasting capacity and ductility. The results show that reasonable connection have better power-wasting capacity and ductility , so it can be applicated in multiple-story steel frame structure.

Four different types of full-scale slotted end plate (SEP) connection joints are tested to determine their failure modes and damage mechanisms under ultimate loading. Researches on mechanical behaviors of I-type, T-type, U-type and Groove SEP connection joints bearing compression are studied, which also analyze their force-displacement behaviors and developing processes of deformation and strain. The results show that the bearing capacities of I, grooved, T and U types SEP connections are increased gradually, which indicate the SEP’s type has great influence on the ultimate strength of joints. The instability of SEP is the main factor to cause the loss of bearing capacity of the connection, which is shown through the development of strain, that SEP enters into plastic stage and the other regions still are elastic.

This paper presents an experimental investigation on typical end-plate connection with reduced beam-to-end plate welding, connected to cruciform column (CCUB) section. The study aims to reduce the cost of fabrication and materials. Two tests were conducted to study the behavior of the proposed connections and evaluate the failure modes, moment resistance, initial stiffness and rotational capacity of the connections. The experimental results indicated that the failure mechanisms for the tested specimens begin with the end-plate yielding followed by bolt slippage that was limited to the tension region of the joint due to the tension forces exerted through the top bolt rows. The experimental results will then be used to validate the theoretical model for the T-stub idealization of the tension zone.

Steel construction allows fast and economical method of construction which also fulfills the requirement of clients. Especially low-rise building such as industrial building is the most common in steel frame. There are few common types of connection that are commonly being used in the industry such as flush end plate connection and extended end plate connection. This research is conducted to evaluate the performance of end plate connection as the common steel connection in low-rise buildings. Software ConSteel is used to evaluate the performance of identified connections by analysis. At the end of the research, an optimize design of end plate connection maybe recommended based on the performance and serve as a basic of improvement and guidance of safety.
