HIPIB irradiation experiment is carried out at a specific ion current density of 1.1 J/cm2 with shot number from one to ten in order to explore the effect of shot number on electrochemical corrosion behavior of magnesium alloy. Surface morphologies, microstructure and corrosion resistance of the irradiated samples are examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and potentiodynamic polarization technique, respectively. It is found that HIPIB irradiation leads to the increase in open circuit potential, corrosion potential and breakdown potential, and the decrease in the corrosion current density and the corrosion rate as compared to the original sample. The improved corrosion resistance is mainly attributed to the grain refinement and surface purification induced by HIPIB irradiation.

In order to enhance the corrosion resistance of AZ31 magnesium alloy, graphene-modified oily epoxy resin coating (G/OEP) were prepared on the surface of magnesium alloy. SEM observations show that graphene has fewer surface defects, and can significantly improve the surface quality of the coating and reduce defects. FI-TR testing shows that coating are mainly composed of epoxy resin (polyurethane) and its corresponding curing agent. Electrochemical testing shows that the coating can provide good corrosion protection for magnesium alloy. Compared with the corrosion current density of magnesium alloy of 6.20 × 10−7 A/cm2, the G/OEP can significantly reduce the corrosion current density to 6.96 × 10−12 A/cm2. Analysis of the morphology of the coating after electrochemical corrosion found that graphene can improve the shielding ability of the coating to corrosive media, and reduce the damage of corrosion to the coating structure, and enhance the corrosion resistance of the coating. The content of graphene for excellent corrosion resistance of coating during this experiment is 0.6 wt%. The graphene can fill the defects generally in the coating during the curing process to prevent substrate from penetration of corrosive media caused by the density and hydrophobicity of coating are increased.

The corrosion behavior of graphite-like carbon (GLC) coating in sea water was studied and yttrium and cerium were doped into it by using mosaic in the target of magnetron sputtering process to improve its corrosion resistance. The result shows that the GLC coating characterizes typical underfilm electrochemical corrosion in sea water. Yttrium added in chromium interlayer or yttrium and cerium added in the surface layer of the GLC coating can apparently improve the microstructure result in significantly decrease the corrosive current density. As the modifications of Y in interlayer and Y, Ce and Ta in top layer are composed together to form complex GLC coating, the wear resistance and the antifriction is dramatically improved, the corrosive current density is only one-twenty fourth of that of the commercial C/Cr GLC coating.

In this paper, electrochemical corrosion tests and full immersion corrosion experiments were conducted in seawater at room temperature to investigate the electrochemical corrosion behavior and the corrosion mechanism of high-strength EH47. The polarization curve, EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), SEM (scanning electron microscope), and EDS analyses were employed to analyze the results of the electrochemical corrosion process. The electrochemical corrosion experiments showed that the open circuit potential of EH47 decreases and then increases with an increase in total immersion time, with the minimum value obtained at 28 days. With an increase in immersion time, the corrosion current density (Icorr) of EH47 steel first decreases and then increases, with the minimum at about 28 days. This 28-day sample also showed the maximum capacitance arc radius, the maximum impedance and the minimum corrosion rate. In the seawater immersion test in the laboratory, the corrosion mechanism of EH47 steel in the initial stage of corrosion is mainly pitting corrosion, accompanied by a small amount of crevice corrosion with increased corrosion time. The corrosion products of EH47 steel after immersion in seawater for 30 days are mainly composed of FeOOH, Fe3O4 and Fe2O3.

The amorphous hydrogenated (a-C:H) film-coated titanium, using different CH4/H2 and deposition times, was prepared by the ion beam deposition (IBD) method, which has the advantage of high adhesion because of the graded interface mixes at the atomic level. The chemical characterizations and corrosion behaviors of a-C:H film were investigated and evaluated by SEM, AFM, Raman spectroscopy, EPMA, TEM and XPS. An a-C:H film-coated titanium was corroded at 0.8 V, 90 °C in a 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 solution for 168 h. The metal ion concentration in the H2SO4 corrosion solution and the potentiodynamic polarization behavior were evaluated. Results indicate that a higher CH4/H2 of 1:0 and a deposition time of 12 h can result in a minimum ID/IG ratio of 0.827, Ra of 5.76 nm, metal ion concentration of 0.34 ppm in the corrosion solution and a corrosion current of 0.23 µA/cm2. The current density in this work meets the DOE’s 2020 target of 1 µA/cm2. Electrical conductivity is inversely proportional to the corrosion resistance. The significant improvement in the corrosion resistance of the a-C:H film was mainly attributed to the increased sp3 element and nanocrystalline TiC phase in the penetration layer. As a result, the a-C:H film-coated titanium at CH4/H2 = 1:0 with improved anti-corrosion behavior creates a great potential for PEMFC bipolar plates.

The effect of graphite shapes on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of cast iron was studied by means of weight loss tests, electrochemical measurements and electron microscopy. It was found that the electrochemical corrosion behavior of graphite is significantly different from one other, and the corrosive potential difference between carbide ad the matrix is the main driving force of the different phase corrosions. Among them, the center A type and edge D type graphite exhibited the highest corrosion resistance. The corrosion of white iron is worst, because there are so many type carbides in white iron and so there is an obvious tendency to produce micro-cell in white iron.

The ceria coatings on AZ91 substrates were successfully synthesized by chemical conversion and the corrosion resistance of AZ91 samples with and without ceria coatings were evaluated by means of electrochemical corrosion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. According to the parameters derived from the polarization date, the Icorr (the corrosion current density) values of the coated samples are smaller than that of bare one, indicating that the corrosion resistance of AZ91 alloys has been improved to some extent. The influence of fluoridated pretreatment, inter-layer heat treatment, sintering temperature and the layer of films on the performance of ceria coatings were also investigated. It was found that the inter-layer heat treatment has no influence on improving the anticorrosion resistance of AZ91 alloy. In comparison with the bare one, the Icorr of optimal sample is about 0.0219mA/cm2, which decreases by two orders of magnitude, indicating that the ceria coatings could significantly improve the corrosion resistance of AZ91 magnesium alloy.
