Due to high strength, high wear resistance and high corrosion resistance, the amorphous metallic glasses were investigated widely. In the present study, the corrosion resistance of amorphous coating and composite coatings with various proportions of AT13 (Al2O3–13 wt.% TiO2) ceramic as additions in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution were studied. The corrosion resistance was improved obviously as the addition of AT13, and when the content of AT13 was 15 wt.%, the composite coating had the lowest corrosion current density (1.75 × 10−6 A cm−2) and the highest corrosion potential (−411 mV), which was 5.14 × 10−5 A cm−2 and −580 mV for Fe-based metallic glassy coating, respectively. The corrosion mechanism was proposed according to the long-time immersion corrosion test.

Marine immersion corrosion observations for archaeological and other data, including from shipwrecks, wrought iron anchors and cast iron bridge piers are used to estimate corrosion losses in natural unpolluted coastal and near-coastal seawaters for exposures up to about 600 years. Empirical functions for the development of corrosion loss with time were then developed, standardized to 20˚C mean seawater temperature. The resulting slightly non-linear corrosion loss trend, represented by a modified form of the power law, is consistent with Phase 4 of the previously proposed bi-modal corrosion model. These observations support the notion that the rate of long-term corrosion is controlled by outward diffusion, through the rust layers, of gaseous hydrogen generated by the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction under predominantly anaerobic corrosion conditions. The power-law trend also provides good extrapolation from shorter- term data. For practical purposes for exposures < 100 years in seawaters with mean temperature around 20˚C, a linear model, with longer-term corrosion rate 0.06 mm/y at 20˚C, is sufficiently accurate.

In the present study, the corrosion resistance of amorphous coating and composite coatings in 3.5 wt.% NaCl, 0.5 M H2SO4 and 10 wt.% NaOH solution were studied. The composite coatings exhibit superior corrosion resistance. When the content of AT13 (Al2O3–13 wt.% TiO2)was 15 wt.%, the composite coating has the lowest corrosion current density (1.75×10-6 A cm-2), which is 5.14×10-5 A cm-2 for Fe-based metallic glassy coating, and the highest corrosion potential (-411 mV), which is -580 mV for Fe-based metallic glassy coating. The breakdown potential of the passivation film in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was much higher than that of 316L.The long-time immersion corrosion tests carried out on different coatings showed that the corrosion protection effect of coating was enhanced with the increase of the amount of AT13 added.

In this work, Ni-based alloy coatings incorporated with Nb mass fractions of 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9% were successfully fabricated by laser cladding. The morphology, chemical composition, and phases of the obtained Nb-modified Ni-based coatings were characterized, and the effects of Nb contents on their electrochemical performance and immersion rates in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution were analyzed. The results show that the Ni-based coating with low Nb exhibits the most compact and refined microstructure, the best electrochemical passivation, and the lowest immersion corrosion rate of 3.30 × 10−3 mm/year. However, with increasing Nb content, the Laves phase is accumulated, and dendritic growth is promoted, which significantly decreases the coating passive stability and worsens the anti-corrosion performance.

Herein, powder metallurgy gas-solid nitriding was used to prepare a high-nitrogen Ni-free austenitic stainless steel with more than 1.0 wt.% N. Study of the microstructures and corrosion resistances of the as-prepared samples revealed that the corrosion weight loss, size, number of corrosion pits, and corrosion depth decreased as the N content increased from 1.19 to 1.37 wt.%. The self-corrosion current densities of the alloys were determined from their potentiodynamic polarization curves. The changes in the capacitive arc radius as demonstrated by the Nyquist curves were consistent with the conclusions of the immersion corrosion analysis; that is, a high N content leads to a high corrosion resistance.

In this paper, the alternate immersion corrosion test of Cr-Mo-V series SDCM steel for hot stamping was carried out, and different stresses were loaded with self-made fixture. The results shown that regardless of hardness and stress, the corrosion mode of the material is uniform corrosion. Stress could significantly increase the corrosion rate, with lower hardness and higher corrosion rate. Because of the existence of Corrosion Removal Layer (CRL), the maximum corrosion pit depth would be reduced. The maximum corrosion pit depth and Corrosion Pit density (CPD, ρv) were used to describe the degree of corrosion damage. From low to high hardness, the CPD ρv and corrosion resistance increased gradually. With the increased of tempering temperature, the hardness decreased, and the percentage of carbide area in the field of view increased from 16.36% to 24.32%. The irregular spherical carbide M23(C, N)6 rich in Cr coarsens and consumes Cr element in the material, which lead to the decrease of corrosion resistance. Through the polarization curve of the dynamic potential, we known that the current density was increased with the hardness decreased, from 28.53 μA/mm2 to 40.93 μA/mm2.

Purpose Nickel-aluminum bronze (NAB) has been widely used in ship propellers. It is always subjected to local micro-plastic deformation in service environments. This paper aims to study the influence of plastic deformation on the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of NAB in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution. Design/methodology/approach Scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction were used to analyze the microstructure of NAB alloy with different plastic deformations. Mechanical properties of the sample were measured by tensile experiment, and corrosion behavior was studied by electrochemical measurements and the long-term immersion corrosion test. Findings Results showed that the plastic deformation caused lattice distortion but did not change the microstructure of NAB alloy. Microhardness and yield strength of NAB were significantly improved with the increase of deformation. The lattice distortion accelerated the formation of corrosion product film, which made the deformed alloy show a more positive open-circuit potential and an increased Rp. However, during the long-term immersion corrosion, the corrosion resistance of NAB alloys deteriorated with the increase of plastic deformation. This is because larger plastic deformation brought about higher internal stress in corrosion product film, which resulted in the premature peeling of the film and the loss of its protective effect on the alloy substrate. Originality/value Tensile plastic deformations were found to cause a decline in the corrosion resistance of NAB. And the mechanism was clarified from the evolution of corrosion products during the corrosion process.

In this work, the use of ZrO2 nanocoating in aluminum substrates, generated by controlled electrochemical chronoamperometry in hexafluorozirconic acid solutions (H2ZrF6·5H2O), resulted in a lower porous films than that obtained by chemical conversion coating. After the application of an epoxy coating, long-term cyclic immersion corrosion tests and scratch tests proved the superior protection of the dual system and the coating lifespan, thanks to the enhanced adhesion of ZrO2 intermediate layer and the organic coating. As zirconium-based electrolytes are considered more friendly bath if compared to that of other conversion coating processes, like chromating, phosphating or anodizing processes, the study opens new insights to the protection of structural metals in sectors such as automotive, naval and aerospace industries. The main advantages are the employment of lightweight intermediate pre-treatment (nanoscale), compared to conventional ones (microscale), and reduction of waste slurry (electrolyte bath free of additives).
