Current requirements for producing highly precise and ultra-smooth micro structured surfaces of small parts are proposed in certain situations. The following question arises: how to make a highly precise and ultra-smooth micro-structured surface with high efficiency and low cost? Novel desktop lapping and polishing devices should be developed to satisfy these requirements. In order to improve the surface topography and remove the surface damaged layer of a highly precise and ultra-smooth micro thin-walled structure after milling with the width of 150 μm and the depth of 10 μm, a novel lapping desktop device is designed and developed. There are two key points in the design of the lapping desktop device: one is the vertical coupled macro-micro movement axis; the other is the fixture with a thin and flexible hinge structure, which has the capability of measuring both force and displacement as a double-feedback sensor to control both the micro lapping force and the depth of lapping. The experimental results show that the surface topography of the micro thin-walled structured surface is much improved after lapping, and that the three-dimensional surface roughness decreased from 329 nm to 82.2 nm.

Nowadays, Li–CO2 batteries have attracted enormous interests due to their high energy density for integrated energy storage and conversion devices, superiorities of capturing and converting CO2. Nevertheless, the actual application of Li–CO2 batteries is hindered attributed to excessive overpotential and poor lifespan. In the past decades, catalysts have been employed in the Li–CO2 batteries and been demonstrated to reduce the decomposition potential of the as-formed Li2CO3 during charge process with high efficiency. However, as a representative of promising catalysts, the high costs of noble metals limit the further development, which gives rise to the exploration of catalysts with high efficiency and low cost. In this work, we prepared a K+ doped MnO2 nanowires networks with three-dimensional interconnections (3D KMO NWs) catalyst through a simple hydrothermal method. The interconnected 3D nanowires network catalysts could accelerate the Li ions diffusion, CO2 transfer and the decomposition of discharge products Li2CO3. It is found that high content of K+ doping can promote the diffusion of ions, electrons and CO2 in the MnO2 air cathode, and promote the octahedral effect of MnO6, stabilize the structure of MnO2 hosts, and improve the catalytic activity of CO2. Therefore, it shows a high total discharge capacity of 9,043 mAh g−1, a low overpotential of 1.25 V, and a longer cycle performance.

The non-contact three-dimensional measurement and reconstruction techniques have played a significant role in the packaging and transportation of precious cultural relics. This paper develops a structured light based three-dimensional measurement system, with a low-cost for cultural relics packaging. The structured light based system performs rapid measurements and generates 3D point cloud data, which is then denoised, registered and merged to achieve accurate 3D reconstruction for cultural relics. The multi-frequency heterodyne method and the method in this paper are compared. It is shown that the relative accuracy of the proposed low-cost system can reach a level of 1/1000. The high efficiency of the system is demonstrated through experimental results.

In order to improve the limits of wall thickness reduction of 30CrMnSiA steel in process of spinning, realize multi-pass continuous spinning process, and furthermore improve the forming efficiency and shape accuracy of thin-walled shell of 30CrMnSiA steel in spinning process, the influence of traditional annealing and austenization plus spheroidal annealing on the structure performance of 30CrMnSiA steel and the spun performance of 30CrMnSiA steel are studied. Process parameters of traditional anneal and austenize plus spheroidal annealing are optimized to obtain higher plastic performance and lower ratio of yield strength to tensile strength. Spinning experiments of the workpieces that have been heattreated by the optimized traditional annealing process and austenization plus spheroidal process are completed. The result shows that the optimized austenization plus spheroidal annealing is beneficial to achieve a large thinning rate for flow spinning process, and can meet the demands of low cost and high efficiency of batch production.

The design of high-efficiency lower-emission coal-fed power plants is facilitated by the extensive use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. This paper describes work conducted at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) to provide an environment for the immersive three-dimensional visualization of CFD simulation results. A low-cost high-resolution projection system has been developed in the visualization lab at NETL. This multi-wall system consists of four projection screens, three of which are tiled into four quadrants. The graphics for the multi-wall system are rendered using a cluster of eight personal computers. A high-level visualization interface named Mavis has also been developed to combine the powerful 3D modules of OpenDX with methods developed at NETL for studying multiphase CFD data. With Python, a completely new OpenDX user interface was built that extends and simplifies the features of a basic graphics library.

Considerable research effort has been focused on evaluating the accuracy of meso- and macroscale digital close range photogrammetry. However, evaluations of accuracy and applications in the submillimeter scale are rare. In this paper the authors propose the development of a three-dimensional (3D) photogrammetric scanner, based on macrolens cameras, able to reconstruct the three-dimensional surface topography of objects with submillimeter features. The system exploits multifocal image composition and has been designed for installation on all types of Numerical Controlled or Robotic systems. The approach is exploitable for digitizing submillimeter features at mesoscale as well as macroscale objects.

A compact three-dimensional (3D) circularly polarized (CP) microstrip antenna is presented in this paper. The antenna adopts three low-cost printed circuit boards to form an integrated and closed 3D structure, and the radiation patch and the feed patches are etched on the surface of that. A crossed slot is cut on the radiation patch to miniaturize the antenna, and triangular feed patches are introduced to increase the bandwidths. In addition, because of the utilization of a low-loss series feed line, the antenna has a high efficiency of more than 95%. A prototype of the antenna is measured to validate the method. The dimensions of the antenna is 0.064λ × 0.36λ (λ is the wavelength in free space at 1.2 GHz). The results indicate that the impedance bandwidth for voltage standing wave ratio ≤ 2 reaches 23%, and the bandwidth for axial ratio (AR) ≤ 3 dB reaches 10.1%. In the overlap band, the gains are > 4.5dBic. Additionally, the 3 dB beamwidth is more than 114°, and the beamwidth for AR ≤ 3 dB is more than 131° at 1.2 GHz.

The cold thread rolling technology was developed rapidly in recent years due to its high efficiency, low cost and perfect mechanical properties of its production. However, researches on the precise thread rolling of the hollow parts were very few. Traditionally, the minimum thickness of the thin-walled threaded parts by thread rolling was mainly determined by the empirical (trial and error) methods. In this study, the forming process of thin-walled thread parts rolled with three thread rolling dies was analyzed. The stress state of the hollow work piece was obtained by solving the statically indeterminate problems. Then, the equations for the minimum wall thickness were derived. Experiments are also performed. The experimental results are generally in good agreement with those by the current theoretical analysis. It could be concluded that the analysis presented in this study can provide a good guidance for the thread rolling of hollow parts.
