Through introducing the design axioms in axiomatic design, the thesis elaborated the relationship between axiomatic design and reliability design of product, then analyzed the effects of product reliability caused by coupled design, and explained the necessity that avoided coupled design and the significance that kept the product function independent during product design.

Environmental effects are not considered sufficiently in product design. Reliability problems caused by environmental effects are very prominent. This paper proposes a method to apply ontology approach in product design. During product reliability design and analysis, environmental effects knowledge reusing is achieved. First, the relationship of environmental effects and product reliability is analyzed. Then environmental effects ontology to describe environmental effects domain knowledge is designed. Related concepts of environmental effects are formally defined by using the ontology approach. This model can be applied to arrange environmental effects knowledge in different environments. Finally, rubber seals used in the subhumid acid rain environment are taken as an example to illustrate ontological model application on reliability design and analysis.

We studied the mechanism of the influence of the Internet of Things (IOT) product characteristics on consumer purchase intention. The results of a survey of 360 consumers showed that 6 dimensions of IOT product characteristics influence purchase intention; namely connectivity, interactivity, telepresence, intelligence, convenience, and security. We found that customer experience was the key mediating variable in the relationship between IOT product characteristics and purchase intention. Connectivity, interactivity, telepresence, intelligence, convenience, and security all positively influenced purchase intention via functional experience. Furthermore, connectivity, telepresence, convenience, and security positively influenced purchase intention via emotional experience. Our findings in the study provide some points of reference for improvement of IOT product design.

Product innovation design is challenging due to the complexity of the industrial environment, the changing needs of markets and customers, the effect of intense social competition, and the unpredictability of the future. This paper presents in a systematic analysis of reliability method on industrial product innovation design in order to illustrate what the real meaning of reliability method and how it works on the product innovation design. It also clarifies the relationship between reliability method and product innovation design, reflecting the function of reliability method on each work stage. It is concluded that a suitable thinking mode should be applied on the corresponding design, and it will enhance the effectiveness of innovative product design in general.

The selection of a design for the given product is a critical problem in product design development. Focuses of the designers and customers on the design are not identical. In order to bridge the gap and provide a more relaxing way to select the design, a new method based on quality function deployment (QFD) is proposed. In such a method, customers are required to give their linguistic preferences on the design with respect to the customer requirements (CRs). In the rating of the weight of CRs, they are allowed to provide incomplete linguistic weight information and the objective optimization model is proposed to derive the exact linguistic weight information. Designers are required to rate the correlation between design requirements (DRs) and the relationship between the CRs and DRs to construct the house of quality. Opinions given by the customers are translated into the opinions with respect to the DRs based on the QFD. Afterwards, the priorities of the designs and design requirements are determined. The assessment results not only show the contribution of each design requirement to the customer satisfaction but also show the advantages and disadvantages of each design from the designers’ perspective clearly and directly. An example is provided to validate the applicability of the proposed method.

Through the analysis of design ethics principle and content, the design concept of humanism, sustainable development and harmonious are applied to the Touch mouse product design practice, and analyzed the its positive significance in market research, product design positioning, concept sketches design, computer aided industrial design and shell structure design, effectively avoid the appear of various product function, complex modelling, large energy consumption and pollution mode, so as to design a fashion practical and green environmental protection Touch type new mouse, and provide a high quality IT products for consumers. Finally, the goal of balance and harmony between the people, resources and environment is realized.

This article compares and contrasts the use of haptic and digital sketching in the design process. It investigates the preferred sketching method of final year design students. In addition, it examines the relationship between effective communication and the use of haptic and digital sketching. A case study involving ten final year students studying product design courses at Nottingham Trent University was undertaken. The text explores the current literature and identifies the benefits of using the two methods. The inclusion of digital sketching tutorials in the undergraduate curriculum is discussed as well as the option of replacing haptic with digital sketching. The study concludes that while a wider survey with students from other design courses would be useful, the results provide strong evidence that final year students currently prefer haptic to digital sketching as an essential part of the design process.

This paper presents a redesign method supporting sustainable design of products. The method correlates product modularity with various life cycle directions at the conceptual stage of design. In the case of product redesign, the modular design approach allows designers to focus on increasing the sustainability of a product in terms of recyclability, disassembly and reduction of resource usage at the conceptual stage. By stepping back to the conceptual design phase and analyzing the product free from its current embodiment solutions, the scope of redesign and the potential product improvement increases. At this stage of design, the comprehension of the relationship between the various life cycle aspects of the product and the product design is essential. The elimination preference index (EPI) metric, calculated by pair-wise comparison of various factors governing the product design, quantifies the effect of redesign alternatives on product sustainability. The method is applied to the redesign of twelve small-scale consumer products, of which one example is presented here. In all cases, the redesigned products exhibited enhancement in modularity and part count reduction.

In order to reduce time and cost in mechanical product design wizards development work, the Mechanical Product Design Wizard Rapid Development Platform (MPDW-RDP) was established. According to the Independence Axiom, the system architecture of the MPDW-RDP was obtained, then, the MPDW-RDP had been implemented by taking advantage of existing mature software and components in accordance with the Information Axiom, at last, application case indicated that this system can rapidly develop different kinds of mechanical product design wizard.
