Recent studies about the relation between economic growth and environmental pollution are mainly focused on cross-country or the long-run change in an individual country, but give little consideration to the heterogeneity internal one country, which no one can afford to neglect. Making use of the data of 31 major cities from 2005 to 2010 in the case of China, this paper analyzes the economy-environment relation by employing Panel Data Model. The results indicate that there is an inverted N-shaped rather than the inverted S-shaped relation between the economic growth and the environmental degradation in the major cities, whereas the relation between the environmental pollution degree and the proportion of the second industry is positive and statistically significant. It is suggest that there is no uniform environmental policy to the different cities, and every city can develop its comparative advantage to increase the economy growth and improve the environmental condition at the same time.

The paper explores the impact of innovations on the cross-country income differences among advanced economies based on the economic and mathematical models construction. As indicator that defines level of innovations production in the country, we have used number of researchers in R&D sector (per million people). Therefore, it has been constructed panel data model to estimate the effect of number of researchers in R&D sector on GDP per capita in advanced economies. Results of estimation have shown the significant impact of researchers in R&D sector on GDP per capita for the group of advanced economies testifying that innovation really matters in driving economic growth.

The ability of local governments to manage finances is stated in the regional revenue and expenditure budget (APBD). The higher the regional expenditure allocation in the APBD, the higher the level of economic growth to reduce or alleviate the level of poverty. The variables that affect economic growth and poverty include regional expenditure. This study aims to determine the effect of regional spending on economic growth and poverty in regencies/cities in Jambi province partially or collectively. The analytical method used is simple regression analysis with a panel data model. The results showed that regional spending has a negative and partially insignificant effect on economic growth. Regional expenditure has a positive and minor impact on poverty levels in districts/cities in Jambi Province. Keywords: Local government, Economic growth, Poverty.

Purpose The purposes of this paper are: reviewing economic growth in Iran, investigating and comparing Iran doing business (DB) with those of Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries and evaluating the relation between DB and economic growth for a selected sample during 2006-2012. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses the panel data model and takes a comparative approach. Findings The main findings of our investigation are: first, economic growth in Iran has decreased in recent years due the lack of proper business environment. Second, studying Iran DB indicators and comparing them with those of the MENA countries show that they are low and Iran’s ranking is undesirable. Third, the results show a robust support for the claim that the improvement in DB indicators will lead to an increase in economic growth. Researchlimitations/implications MENA countries’ experience shows that they are promoting their economic growth by improving their business environment, so the key element for increasing Iran’ economic growth is by improving the business environment. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature in at least two aspects. First is the comparative analysis of Iran’s DB with MENA countries, and second is considering the effect of DB on Iran’s and selected countries’ economic growth.
