Applying RFID Technology in Tourism Industry: The Case Study of Hotel in Taipei

The study analyzes Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology developments reported in tourism industries, methods used, contexts covered, and provides an overview of the wide range of ways that RFID is being applied to improve tourism processes in hotel. The study develops a research framework: RFID Technology Application Model and stresses that RFID application brings many benefits for hotel, the study summarizes their readiness on different attributes into the two approaches: operations-centric approach and technology-centric, and evaluates the major applications of the two approaches for the case study of hotel in Taipei. The findings show that different RFID applications in tourism industry lead the different benefits. The study offers hotel some managerial implications of how to gain benefits, and make suggestions for internal operating management, as well as recommendations for future research directions. It would be beneficial for future research to study similarities and differences in best practices for RFID implementations not only between different sectors within tourism, but also across industries.

Big Data refers to complex and unstructured data that is difficult to analyse and utilize with traditional applications and analyses. Big Data comes from a variety of sources, including tracking and sensor devices which are widely used in logistics and supply chain management, and relate to Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. Thus, this chapter reviews the literature on RFID adoption in supply chain/logistics management from 1995-2015. We identify current trends in the literature, drawing on the three levels of decision making, that is, strategic, tactical, and operational. We suggest that more research needs to be conducted with regards to the intangible benefits of RFID, the use of RFID big data for achieving higher performance, and to shift the focus from the ‘what' and the impacts on performance to the ‘how' and the ways RFID is adopted and assimilated in organizations and supply chains. Finally, the managerial implications of our review as well as the limitations and future research directions are outlined.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a non-contact, automatic identification technology. Through its radio frequency signal, RFID offers automatic target recognition and access to relevant and without human intervention identification of work is made. RFID can work in various environments. It can identify fast moving objects and is capable of identifying multiple tags, in a rapid and convenient operation. Since the 1990s, RFID technology has been widely used in commercial, logistics, property management and other fields, but interest towards potential application to the needs of the tourism industry only began in recent years.

Industry 4.0 (I4.0) has become a widely accepted manufacturing paradigm across a wide range of industries. It includes an array of various approaches, tools, techniques, and methods. They were known to researchers before, but when combined they build a new reality, which needs procedures for the assessment of technologies and manufacturing processes. Current assessment methods often fail to incorporate economic, environmental, and social impacts simultaneously in an integrated way. The potential implementation of a sustainability assessment procedure on a larger scale is seen for (well-developed) Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The measures for assessment were identified through a literature review and validated by expert panels. Validation measures were quantified using multi-criteria decision making (AHP). Criteria ranking was used for reasoning if the assumed modular structure responded to the experts’ needs. To connect the existing research gap, a holistic and integrated assessment method for I4.0 applications, depicted in a structured way and tailored for RFID technology, is developed, which constitutes a research gap in current literature on this topic. Results showed that a modularized structure of approach (module—group of measures—measures [as indicators]) for RFID sustainability assessment, which depends on the complexity of this technology, may be a convenient method for assessment of I4.0 technologies. It was confirmed that all sustainability perspectives are important due to their contributions to supporting decisions and should be considered in the assessment of RFID. On the other hand, it can help managers and practitioners implement the assessment method in their practice to reduce pollution and save the environment.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) became one of the major disruptive innovations that have attracted the attention of researchers and practitioners around the world. Recognizing the business value of RFID, firms are rapidly adopting RFID technology in a wide range of industries including hospitals, logistics, manufacturing, and retailing. Since the adoption of RFID largely depends on the perceived potential benefits and the investment costs, firms need to carefully assess every intangible and tangible benefits and costs to make sure the adoption is financially, operationally, and strategically justifiable. This chapter provides a literature review on RFID applications in business and valuation methods for RFID and presents an analytical evaluation model for RFID investment for manufacturing and retail organizations. Finally, this chapter concludes with the implications of the chapter for academics and practitioners.

<p>Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) as a tool is being used for the better governance and management of libraries. A RFID system offers a complete package from security, theft detection, tracking, monitoring, inventory control, and act as an expedient in books circulation or charging and discharging of books; and, lessens the burden of librarians, who could be better redeployed to other productive activities in the service of the readers. RFID technology was implemented in Defence Science Library, Defence Scientific Information &amp; Documentation Centre (DESIDOC), Delhi, in 2013. The study describes the process of implementation of RFID system in the Defence Science Library, at DESIDOC. It provides an overview of the work to implement the RFID system including the philosophy or the background or thought process that had gone into deciding in its implementation, the various features, technical specification of the library automation software and system itself. The constraints faced during the data migration and the visible advantages from the users’ perspective vis-à-vis manual operation are also covered. The study concludes that implementation of RFID technology has brought a bouquet of benefits to librarians, the staff and scientists or user of the Library. </p>

Abstract Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a rapidly emerging technology with a wide range of impact and still not fully exploited potential applications. The impact of RFID is not limited to the area of its direct application. There are many possible benefits to be gained from RFID application, but it must be preceded with careful analysis as its implementation is not always reasonable. A new method for an assessment of RFID technology was presented and explained on the case of a white goods manufacturer. There was a lack of such a method allowing for relatively quick and flexible assessment, which is important for decision makers, who do not want to become involved in very sophisticated and time-consuming analysis at the early stage of decision making. The method supports early phases of decision making related to RFID implementation. Conclusions derived from the analysis of the case study confirmed that the method applied allows for rationalizing decision making and answers whether RFID could generate strategic advantage, in which area RFID should be applied, how RFID-supported processes will be executed and what benefits would be expected. previous papers focused only on answering specific questions from the above list, without showing a holistic approach. the approach to answer questions about execution of processes and benefits was not considered earlier at all. The paper illustrates details of using a new method of an assessment of RFID technology (ART) using a real industrial example.

Object analysis using visual sensors is one of the most important and challenging issues in computer vision research due principally to difficulties in object representation, segmentation, and recognition within a general framework. This has motivated researchers to investigate exploiting the potential identification capability of RFID (radio frequency identification) technology for object analysis. RFID however, has a number of fundamental limitations including a short sensing range, missing tag detection, not working for all objects, and some items being just too small to be tagged. This has meant applying RFID alone has not been entirely effective in computer vision applications. To address these restrictions, object analysis approaches based on a combination of visual sensors and RFID have recently been successfully introduced. This chapter presents a contemporary review on these object analysis techniques for localisation, tracking, and object and activity recognition, together with some future research directions in this burgeoning field.

The safety and security of a destination is an essential factor that helps travelers decide whether to visit or not. In Nepal, Thamel is the main destination for tourists due to the availability of multiple facilities and services. In fact, most of the tourists who use airspace to travel to Nepal, start and conclude their journey in Thamel. Therefore, the safety and security of Thamel is an important factor that influences the fate of the Nepalese tourism industry. However, there is a lack of research to understand the safety and security situation of Thamel. The purpose of this exploratory study is to assess the overall security situation and challenges in Thamel. Descriptive statistics are used to present the findings. Findings suggest that Thamel as a tourism destination has many areas for improvement to provide better tourist experiences. Since Thamel is a starting and concluding point of attraction for tourists, we offer important managerial implications and future research directions.

Radio Frequency Identification is a technology which is developing fast now while taking into account the area of the automatic identification of goods. In the paper, there is presented RFID as one of the latest and most promising logistics technologies. There have been indicated the RFID essence, analyzed the support for warehousing processes in the selected surveyed company and examples of the ways of using RFID application in the selected warehousing processes of the selected sectors.
