A 1,8-naphthyridine modified rhodamine B derivative, one Cu2+-selective chemosensors was designed, synthesized and characterized, which display a high selectivity for Cu2+among environmentally and biologically relevant metal ions. It can detect Cu2+in aqueous solution selectively with a dramatic colour change from colorless to magenta. The detection mechanism involves a ring-opening process as a consequence of metal complex formation. Jobs plots study indicated that the chemosensor chelated Cu2+with 2:1 stoichiometry.

Rhodamine B thiohydrazide (RBS) was firstly employed as turn-on fluorescent probe for hypochlorite in aqueous solution and living cells. It exhibits a stable response to hypochlorite from 1.0×10-6to 1.0×10-5M with a detection limit of 3.3×10-7M. The response of this probe to hypochlorite is fast and highly selective compared with other reactive oxygen species (such as.OH,1O2, H2O2) and other common anions (such as X-, ClO2-, ClO4-, NO3-, NO2-, OH-, Ac-, CO32-, SO42-).

Synopsis: A well-known tryptophan metabolite, xanthurenic acid, a natural non-fluorescent intermediate siderophore, showed a very selective turn-on response to K+ over other competing metal ions and the detection limit of this natural ionophore was found to be 53 nM at physiological pH.

A novel fluorescent rhodamine-based probe L for selective responding to ClO– has been synthesized and characterized. The spectroscopy showed that probe L can detect ClO– in aqueous solution without interaction with other interfering ions, and the detection is also evident by the colour change from colourless to reddish purple under white light. The remarkable fluorescence enhancement showed the high selectivity and sensitivity of probe L for the detection of ClO–. Furthermore, probe L was applied to intracellular fluorescent imaging of HeLa cells treated with ClO– and MTT assay showed nontoxicity in living cells.

A reaction-based florescence probe CBF for serum albumin (SA) was proposed by connecting a dioxaborine unit with environment-sensitive coumarin fluorophore. CBF exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity toward SA over other biologically relevant species and has potential of detecting SA in biosamples.
