A great amount of work has been done over the past few years to use the glass fibers reinforcing polypropylene (PP) composites. Due to the sharp resources recovery, and the global demand for fiber materials, there has been growing interest in the use of the recycled glass fibers (GF) (RGF) as an alternative. This work focuses on the reinforcing mechanisms of the glass fibers in PP composites. The reinforcing mechanism is evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on the basis of the energy dissipation theory. The GF are the excellent supporting bodies. Interfacial debonding, fiber pullout and breakage dissipate tremendous energy. These factors cause improvements in the strength of the RGF/PP and MGF/PP composites.

The structure of insect salivary glands has been extensively investigated during the past decade; however, none have attempted scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in ultrastructural examinations of these secretory organs. This study correlates fine structure by means of SEM cryofractography with that of thin-sectioned epoxy embedded material observed by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM).Salivary glands of Gromphadorhina portentosa were excised and immediately submerged in cold (4°C) paraformaldehyde-glutaraldehyde fixative1 for 2 hr, washed and post-fixed in 1 per cent 0s04 in phosphosphate buffer (4°C for 2 hr). After ethanolic dehydration half of the samples were embedded in Epon 812 for TEM and half cryofractured and subsequently critical point dried for SEM. Dried specimens were mounted on aluminum stubs and coated with approximately 150 Å of gold in a cold sputtering apparatus.Figure 1 shows a cryofractured plane through a salivary acinus revealing topographical relief of secretory vesicles.

Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre introduced the first successful photographic process, the daguerreotype, in 1839. Tarnished regions on daguerreotypes supplied by the National Gallery of Canada were examined using scanning electron microscopy energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and synchrotron-radiation analysis. Synchrotron X-ray fluorescence imaging visualized the distribution of sulfur and chlorine, two primary tarnish contributors, and showed that they were associated with the distribution of image particles on the surface. X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy determined the tarnish to be primarily composed of AgCl and Ag2S. Au2S, Au2SO4, HAuCl4 and HgSO4 were also observed to be minor contributors. Environmental contamination may be a source of these degradation compounds. Implications of these findings will be discussed.

Triatoma ryckmani Zeledón & Ponce, 1972 is a species found in sylvatic habitat at Central America. Considered rare in the past and poorly studied, nowadays can be found inside houses with potential of dispersal and colonization. All five instars of T. ryckmani are described based on optical and scanning electron microscopy. The postembryonic development of the head analyzed by ontogenetic morphometry showed the largest changes occur in the first three instars. Information about morphology of the immature stages of disease vectors can be helpful in the identification process increasing speed and efficiency of control strategies.

Glass wool, made of chemically bound glass fibers which trap stagnant air, has been used in a variety of applications as phonic and thermic insulation material. Mechanical and insulating qualities of the material depend heavily on the characteristics of the fibers themselves. Aside from the composition of the glass, the length and diameter distributions of the fibers within the material can be related to these characteristics. A fast and reliable means for obtaining these size distributions is therefore a crucial issue for quality control.Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging was used to access sub-micron dimensions of the fibers; and image analysis, as opposed to manual procedures, was used for obtaining measurements.Samples of clean raw fibers (free of binder) were dispersed with ultrasound into a pH 9 aqueous solution and later deposited on a track-etched polycarbonate filter with 0.2 μm pore size. The filter was then dried, coated, and observed in BSE mode in a standard SEM, or left uncoated and observed in an environmental SEM (ESEM).

The melamine phosphate (MP) was synthesized from melamine and phosphate acid. Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) was added into the MP during its synthesis. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to characterize the reaction products. The composites were prepared from polypropylene (PP) and intumescent flame retardant (IFR) additives of MP and pentaerythritol (PER). The effect of Al2O3 content on the properties of the composites was investigated by the limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetry (TG) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that the LOI value of the composites could be enhanced obviously with suitable content of Al2O3. When the Al2O3 content was 6 wt% in MP, the LOI value increased to 35.5% from 31.0% for the composite without Al2O3, the amount of residual char at 600°C increased from 8.9 wt% to 13.9 wt%.

The effects of polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) on the interfacial interaction of PP/GF composites were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and mechanical properties. The experimental results demonstrate that PP-g-MA could effectively improve interfacial interaction between the PP and LGF. Based on SEM, good interfacial adhesion between PP and LGF in PP/PP-g-MA/LGF(66.5/3.5/30) composites was observed. All results in this paper were consistent, and showed the good interaction between PP and LGF, which were proved by the mechanical properties of the composites.

AbstractChick embryos are frequently used as animal models when researching the developing heart. In the past, every attempt to induce complete transposition (the combination of concordant arrioventricular and discordant ventriculo-arterial connections) failed in chicks, suggesting that it might be impossible to develop a chicken modle for this malformation. We demonstrate, to the best of our knowledge, the first well-documented case of complete transpositon occourrine in the chick

The main point of this paper is to assess the level of corrosion damage of the composite textile fiberglass reinforcement in environments that simulate the concrete pore solution by the techniques of FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), SEM (scanning electron microscopy) as well as EDS (scanning electron microscopy). Effect of corrosion on the tensile strength segmented textile glass fiber was tested and also it was investigated specific type of protective organic coating on glass fiber. The results express the evidence of local corrosion damage on the examined samples just at pH 13.5, and on the contrary high stability in the environment simulating carbonated concrete and concrete contaminated by chloride anions. The thesis also points on the unevenness of the excluded protective organic coating with localized porosity which relates to the above mentioned corrosion damage.
